About 15 years ago we ordered some early reader story books through a Canadian public school book fundraising program. The books arrived from China in a box that also included an unexpected "free gift". It was a metal globe "piggy bank" about 4-5" diameter. I thought this was nice but before I gave it to my ~ 5 year old daughter I looked carefully at the labelling. The labels read like "China" ruled about 40 to 60% of the world, including all of the stations in Antarctica, and even some in the Arctic! Needless to say I didn't give it to my daughter, I only wish I had shown it to the school board with my concerns for the exposure of our children to this propaganda.

As you said, Chile and Argentina's claims can be traced back to colonial times, but most people agree that the modern claims date back to at least 1906 when both countries started discussing where should their borders be in the Antarctic Peninsula. What happened in 1940 is that Chile formalized the limits of their antarctic claim through a decree but the claim is way older than that decree.

Everywhere the the Sun rises it does so due East and sets due West That is great for anybody who does not like maths as the Flat+Still bearing is increasingly North of due East / West as you move Southwards from the North pole. Thus on the Equinox you need only check if it sets really close to or exactly on due West. It is a globe if it does so and Flat+Still if it sets significantly further North. If it sets further South I have no idea what shape the Earth is.

Arktos in Greek means bear, not north. North is Voreios.(Βόρειος, the beta was pronounced as a B in classical Greek.) And the latinized forms can be found in the scientific name for the Brown bear: Ursus arctos [literally: bear bear) and the Northeren lights, Aurora Borealis.
So Antarctica means "Where there are no bears", and there are none there, not even polar bears (Ursus maritimus)
