    Lyrics
    Phonetically produced with English letters
Sto ‘pa kai sto xanaléo sto gialó min kateveís, sto ‘pa kai sto xanaléo sto gialó min kateveís,
o gialós échei fourtoúna kai se párei kai chatheís, o gialós échei fourtoúna kai se párei kai chatheís. ------
Ki an me párei pou me páei péra sta vathiá nerá,
ki an me párei pou me páei péra sta vathiá nerá,
káno to kormí mou várka kai ta chéria mou koupiá,
to mantíli mou panáki bainovgaíno stin steriá. ------
Sto ‘pa kai sto xanaléo mi mou gráfeis grámmata, sto ‘pa kai sto xanaléo mi mou gráfeis grámmata,
giatí grámmata den xéro ki archinó ta klámata, giatí grámmata den xéro ki archinó ta klámata.
    English translation
I've told you and I'll tell you again, don't go down to the sea, I'm telling you again, don't go down to sea
the sea has a storm and it will take you and you will be ost, the sea has a storm and it will take you and you will be lost. ------
And if it takes me, where will it take me, down to the deep waters,
And if takes me, where will it take me, down to the deep waters,
I will make my body a boat and my hands oars, my handkerchief (actually a headscarf worn by traditional Greek women) cloth I reach the other side of the shore. ------
I'll say it again, don't write me letters, I'll tell you again, don't write me letters,
because I don't know letters and I start crying, because I don't know letters and I start cryin

Actually, at the end, it is not 'because I don't know letters...'. It translates into 'because I don't know how to read' because in Greek, the word 'Γράμμα/Letter' means both 'written correspondence' and 'character in the alphabet'. So, he can't read the letters of the letter.

@@marabtsgreece2587 thank you. You are correct. thought it would have been "understood" in "traditional speak" (as mostly everyone does know how to read letters today). So I left it as was. ❤

The song is an old greek folk song from west Minor Asia (Anatolia). The singer tries to prevent the person he loves from emigrating. He tells the person to stay away from the sea (which was associated with distant trips and emigration in the mentality of the Greeks of the Ottoman era), but the person responds that he/she can manage the dangers of the sea (and emigration). Finally, the singer expresses his huge sorrow for his beloved person's emigrating, cause not only he won't meet the person again, but also he won't have any news from him/her again, since the singer is illiterate and will not be able to read the person's letters.

Dalaras is one of the big voices in my opinion not only in Greece but in Europe and globaly.. He has some controversial political encounters lately and become more and more odd but just from the voice and singing... If he would been not from smal Greece but living in UK using English he could have done any Musik you can imagine.

The music of the song as the most (if not all) Greek folk songs is legacy of the Byzantine music of our ancestors.
