I was really amazed that an American bothered to listen to this. I mean, it's far too traditional and deeply Greek and "difficult staff", especially for foreigners. It talks about death. Thank you for the reaction.
Greece has a ton of phenomenal singers! If I start writing down names, it would be a long read...
Eleni Vitali had the best voice she is a legend, she overcame a long illness and she returned!
To help you understand the style of music, all I have to tell you is that it is a Byzantine style, it passed to traditional and modern Greek music and is a continuation of ancient Greek music
Based on Byzantine that is based on Middle Eastern and Mediterranean ancient music(includes Ancient Greek music)
@@user-tk5ee2hk9u Byzantine style is older than Middle eastern music..so the middle eastern got their influence from the Byzantine style. Educate yourself.
@@katerinapatiniotis5598 I educate myself every day. Middle Eastern music means of the are of the Middle East. Middle Eastern music means also the music of the ancient people living there like the Sumerians, Hurrians, Babylonians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Anatolian people(like the Hittite), the Ancient Egyptians, and many other people, Middle East could include the Greeks too as the modern term is quite irrelevant as contact between the Greeks and the Near East was very expansive, seen also in the colonisation of Cyprus. I hope you read more about it before commenting in such an absolute way, καλή συνέχεια εύχομαι
@@user-tk5ee2hk9u😂architecture and even melismatic music comes from Byzantium
and from ancient greece
In melismatic singing arabs sing with the nose
and Byzantines with the chest thats the diference
People copy the best going around. Greece was the pre-eminent culture in the Med for 2000 years - so everyone was influenced from them. BUT they loved taking the best bits from cultures around them!!!!
I know nothing about this genre, but what an emotional performance.
Yes it really is!
Glykeria has a voice so powerful it really hits you.
Wow Greek music, like it 😊. Both ladies are very popular in Greece, for decades
Yessss! Especially Glykeria, she is amazing!
Here is a rough translation of the lyrics, it's a bit of a grim song, however, it's a transitional song (unknown composer and lyricist) about the outlaw Greek guerillas who went to the mountains to live freely and fight the Ottomans. I'm pleased you liked it. They tricked me at dawn in spring, and told me the grim Reaper won't take me.Oh poor me I went to the mountains, high in the ridges. I see the grim Reaper coming, on horseback. There is nothing I can do, I know I will die.
Oh wow this is super deep
@@ThatSingerReactions We suffered and we freed ourselves, thanks to Haiti for sending 100 freedom soldiers and 45 t of coffee to pay for powder, I will never forget this story.I'm talking about the Greek revolution
These ladies are Greek music royalty. That style of singing is called Amane (A-ma-ne) and is common in Eastern European and Middle Eastern music. Thanks for another great reaction, Nick 😃
And based on Byzantine music
Amane has nothing to do with Europe..
Your insight on something you're maybe hearing for the first time is spot on man, thanks ! Greetings from Greece.
Both ladies are great voices of our country, they are legends. And the organ is called clarino and plays the notes like saxophone. The style of the singing is Greek country music.
I respect a lot the way you respect the music even though you don't know the Greek culture behind those lyrics . Those 2 ladies + Marinella + Alexiou and lot more are amazing legendary voices.
Thank you so much
Love from Greece 🇬🇷❤️
Song is about a man in Greece being tricked one early morning to climb a mountain, the trick is that when he reaches the top, he see's the Grem reaper on a horse between trees at a path. They say at the end " Don't take me, death, don't take me, because you'll never bring me back.
They are both old and legendary singers, not only Vitali. They have almost the same age
Glykeria is a legend!! Listen to her singing Orthodox hymns!
Those two ladies are legends as well. They love and respect each other ❣️. That's the Greek passion my darling. It's a traditional song Bizantine style. The lyrics it's about a guy that he doesn't want to die and degs Charon to let him live a little longer.
she is an artist of enormous talent improvising. What she started with is called 'amanes'
Glykeria is around the same age as Eleni. Eleni is my most favourite Greek singer!!
They are both amazing singers!
Α ρε Γλυκερία φωνάρα!!! 🎤
You're so right. I remember hearing Eleni Vitale many years ago. Her voice has deepened significantly.
I like this show, my wife watches it. Especially on new years eve it goes crazy. On our wedding in Greece, we had Bouzouki music.
Fast with the Athens Greeks, very slow with family from the mountains. My favorite Greek song, and dance, is "To Zeibekiko Tis Evdokias". If you don't even wiggle a toe, your dead from the inside.
dude its storytelling.. and Glyceria IS a legend!
Death is not taking me. The song speaks for our revolution.
A Greek traditional song of an unknown composer from 1800 or even older, you may call it Greek country music. Greek singers are countless and Greek songs are millions.
They are both legends. The first lady is Ms. Vitali, and it's the uniqueness of her voice that made her so loved.
The second lady , Ms. Glykeria is just amazing.
I can see you are reasarching greek music. You must be the first American to do so.
Pioneer of some sort and youre going to enjoy it.
Im 'Greek so here's the lyrics. Its a funeral song.
The nightingales fooled me a spring's dawn
they fooled me and told me, the boatman will not take me
Don't take me Charon, don't take me, because you won't bring me back
So I went out as a poor man on the mountains, high in the Korfovunia(Highlands)
I see Charon coming, on horseback
What should I do, what should I do, as I think I'm going to die
Sorry for the poor translation effort. I hope it makes sense.
Im sendind you some fav of mine.

I am the one who is reuqesting all of the Greek music reactions! 🙂
The instrument that confused you in the beginning is called "clarinet" ! I love you reaction videos! Keep it up brother! Good Job
Her voice has changed over the years. She's about 80 years old now
Its a clarinet but probably modified in some minor way or probably simply played in a non boring flat way which is typical to the style usually found in western filarmonics
Amanes are traditional Near and Middle East "table" songs (usually sad/dark) sung while at the table not meant for dancing.
To help you aporeciate the senior lady's voice, here is a recording of her singing traditional Greek folk songs, 1996, before falling ill. Eleni Vitali. czcams.com/video/m9DQqIbJSlA/video.html
The lyrics of the song you reacted to:
One early spring morning,
The nightingales fooled me,
As they said that Charon will not take me.
(Refrain) Do not take me, Charon, spare me, for if you take me, you won't bring me back.
Therefore, poor me, alas,
I took to the mountains, up high on the mountain tops,
And there I saw Charon coming, riding on his stallion.
What shall I do now, woe me, when I think that I will die?
(Refrain)
This is a greek folk music. It speaks about how a greek " kleftis" ( a greek soldier of 19th century) feels about his hard life up in the mountains where he fights against the Ottomans to be free! It has a lot of emotional deapth....
@@observer8477when we Greeks hear this kind of music, fell very emotional, especially the parts that the singers sing solo with the clarino (greek clarinet) accompaniament!
Great voices both of them...From Eleni Vitali I propose to listen "Κιβωτός"Kivotos(The Ark)...And of course,Spanoudakis song"Πάμε για αλλες πολιτείες"Pame gia alles politeies... Outstanding performance...
I know it's been two years since this, but the fluctuation in tone and pitch and such is called melisma, and used to be the norm across Europe. We're just one of the few that kept it around.
'then thelo tetious filous' is a greek classic if you're looking for greek tunes.
The instrument he's playing is the clarinet.
Glykeria is a Greek treasure!
The vocals depict the words of a Greek warrior during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottomans, expressing his determination to fight to the death and vowing not to yield, for if he falls in battle, he shall not return.
I'm Greek but listened to this for the first time, this is marvelous.
Here's the translation:
"The dawn of spring, the nightingales mocked me
They mocked me and told me, that death won't take me
Don't take me, Death, don't take me, for you won't bring me back
Here I am, black as night, in the mountains, high in the peaks
I see Death approaching, riding on his horse
What should I do, what should I do, when I think that I'll die"
Hi bro!!! What you like is mostly the non tempered scaled vocals here, apart from slow vibrato and microtonal melisma
amazing
Eleni Vitali the best Lisent the Taxeia
Glikeria mom amour. Our traditional music
Clarinett is the intsument. this song is called taulas and they sing it after eating and ofcourse continue drinking.
Dude react to the LEGENDARY Stellios Kazantzidis
(Greek)Death don't take me.black me I take to the mountains.(english translation) Hare min me Pernis .mavros perno ta vouna .that is what she says.
It ain't party without the clarinets appearance.
The instrument he's playing is a clarinet! Thanks!
Since you like Greek music, i suggest you watch the Greek movie "rempetiko", preferably with subs. It's full of great music, i believe you will enjoy it.
This kind of traditional songs (folk) are all about death. In this particular it's a prayer to death to go away.
Also, i don't know if it was mentioned, the instrument is the clarinet, that is the base for the Greek folk music, along with the violin and the side drum.
Thank you for your words.
It is not a melisma. It is a micromelisma. Non tempered scales brother. That requires more dressed up notes
😘😘😘😘😘
Klarino is the musical instrument
The first singer, Eleni Vitali, stayed away from music industry for many years since she was addicted to pills and that is why her voice is not as it used to be. She is one of my favorites singers though with a very warm voice!
this is country music which part of Greece is different like island music from the northern parts also we have many styles of music
Το τραγουδι αυτο αποδομει την πλανη της αθανασιας.τιποτε αλλο.
Try Anna Vissi - To gkazi (Greece singer)
Okay you have to react yo Natassa Bofiliou or Eleonora Zouganeli!!
React to Dimitris Mitropanos song Roza
Hey Nick, I want to introduce you to another great Greek singer through a short story. I saw an interview with Helen Vitali (the one with the gum in her mouth) and she was telling a story about going to a house by the sea owned by Stelios Kazantzides (the best ever singer that lived in Greece) with her father when she was a little girl. There she met Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. and not only once but many different times through the years. They used to visit Stelios ingognito just to hear him singing. Now I cant verify that but i don't think she had any reason to lie. Anyway here is a link for Stelios and i hope to see your reaction for him . Keep up the good work ! P.S. Marinela was his wife for some time and they were singing together! czcams.com/video/KO_r9N3zyqg/video.html czcams.com/video/nyiKEHM4Ssk/video.html
I believe that the young Greek generation don’t care anymore about those songs just go with the flow… And if all those old ladies gone this music will saddenly dies…
Nothing will dies, only in someone people minds
Κάνεις μεγάλο λάθος..
@@user-pc8gn4hd4f θες να μου πεις οτι εισαι 20χρονων και ακούς τετοια τραγουδια;

I went up high on the mountain
And, my son, I laid down to sleep upon a rock.
That rock, my son, was the tomb of a kleftis*
Of a young boy!
And I heard his voice from within,
Take my body, my brother,
Take my body and in our village lay it to rest.
*kleftis was a man who rebelled against ottoman rulers of Greece back in the 1800's. The song is a traditional moiroloi, mourning song, from Epirus.
Hello! Greetings from 🇬🇷 Greece ❤
So, the musical instrument you mentioned at the beginning of the video belongs to the category of wind instruments and is called "clarinet" (in greek "κλαρίνο"/ ~spelling: kla-rí-no) and belongs to the traditional greek musical instruments.
Have a great day!
Minor key?
Μικρό κλειδί?
Please react to notis sfakianakis.
Song name: Navagia
❤❤❤
I think that's a tongue ring ha ha
here...thats the origin of those melodies... czcams.com/video/BQak5xbOHYM/video.html
They are both old and legends, and the song is very old.and it has to do with us to do with the time where we were slaves to the turks
A major difference between Western music and Middle Eastern music is that Western music tends to be based on a scale (sometimes called a key), while Oriental music is based on a maqam. In the words of the late San Francisco musician Mimi Spencer, a maqam is "something more than a scale, something less than a tune."
It’s not out of tune.
Check eastern music scales
Its a clarinet
Take into consideration that miss Vitali is not in her prime here, and she had a very difficult life. Addictions and stuff like that
do Theos an einai 1550
Vitali has a huge voice,is a legend,but she doesn't have vibrato..
Am so happy because you like the Greek music and culture. Τα τραγούδια αυτά έχουν πολύ πόνο, η προέλευση τους είναι από τους Έλληνες της Μικράς Ασίας, που είχαν ανεπτυγμένη κουλτούρα και πολιτισμό.
Glykeria and Eleni Vitali are great singers, but they've gotten older. They're past their prime in this video.
You chose a piece that only real Hellenes could feel it. You are excused since 30% of Globalists Greeks do not associate themselves with the Glory of Hellas
most greek music has a long intro..be patient bro lol
Both ladies are great but the sound is not right this os from a tv show the guy on sound he is not going his job they have very hight voices both of them
