  • Hauling an American LaFrance V-12 with the 1946 Chevrolet 2-Ton. The engine was my display at several shows this fall and I decided to take it with me into town while running some errands one more time before unloading it for the winter.

Tenho 76 anos.

I had a 41 GMC express delivery big pickup for over 30 years , then sold it.
I put a wrecker and snow plow on it .
I also put a 302 cid six cylinder GM engine with a 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust in it . That had lots of power .
I still have the intake/ exhaust manifold with the 4 barrel carb and the cam and lifters yet .
    Like having V 8 power with a 6 cyl .
Wish I would have had a 3 speed aux trans like your truck has .
    Nice Truck .

Gotta love the comments on these videos. There's a lot of respect for these old trucks. That auxiliary box is gear so well with the 4 speed I kinda want one for my truck now.

And that's how you shift a 4 x 3!! Love the sound of that Warner T9 crash box 4 speed. I've spent many happy hours behind the wheel of a "Babbit Banger" and that 4 speed!
It's great that you got the close ratio Brownie.

I have a '43 Chevy 4400 1.5 ton fire truck. Yours sounds good with that aux. transmission. Mine is the original 216 / 4 speed / Eaton 6.17 rear. Thanks!

Just goes to show you don't need a big block V8 to get the job done. And great to have all those gears to work with. The old stovebolt engines were a workhorse. The 235 on a good day puts out about 90HP by today's standards. I suppose in the heyday of this truck if you got it up to 45 or 50 you were moving right along. 55 is certainly fast enough. And good to have plenty of room. Have you done anything with the engine to increase HP? Have you upgraded anything, such as brakes? Nice truck. And I really like hearing the music in those old gears.

Depends upon the 235. The 235 in my 1960 Chevy pickup puts out about 115 HP. If his engine is stock then its a 216 and about 90 HP.

'Wound up to 55 mph.' Yep, that sounds about right! That auxiliary 3 speed Spicer makes it a little easier on the old dipper engine when you get into the taller gears. I had a late '47 (later body style) 1/2 ton with a 216 and a 4 speed. It would run about 60 without over-revving it.😉 Does yours still have the iron pistons or the newer weighted aluminum slugs? Mine had been changed out shortly before I got it, and all the babbit bearings re-poured and clearanced.

That truck sounds great. Looks like you are double clutching - is the transmission non-sync? I've got a 53 but its the SM-420 with syncro. I also see you shifting another gearshift. Is that the way the 2 speed axle worked on the pre 47 chevy trucks?

    • @jeepcj3b436
      @jeepcj3b436 Před rokem

Just read the comments and think I answered my questions. 4 speed is not the SM-420 and you have a 3 speed auxilary.
