    This is a Motormouth couple car review for the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX compact performance sedan. The WRX gets completely redesigned and reengineered for 2022. It gets a higher performing engine, a new CVT which Subaru is calling a Performance transmission delivering 30% faster upshifts and 50% faster downshifts (virtual shifts) with a quicker and smarter response to driver input. The all-new Subaru WRX has a turbocharged 2.4L flat four with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, available CVT, 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD. The WRX is a sporty sedan has a hexagon shaped grille design with gun metal accents, black window trim, LED headlights and taillights, available LED fog lights and 17” wheels, available 18”. Some standard features include, a 7” touchscreen, available 11.6”, 4.2” multi-information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a flat bottom sport steering wheel 6-speaker audio system, available 11-speaker Harman Kardon system, red stitching, cloth upholstery, available premium cloth and soft material with ultra-suede inserts, gunmetal trim accents and a manual driver and passenger seat with an available power driver seat. The Subaru WRX has been a popular choice for driving enthusiasts for over 30 years! Not only is it fun and engaging to drive but it offers all road and weather capability with standard AWD. The new WRX has a higher performing engine with a turbocharged 2.4L flat four, a standard 6-speed manual transmission, available CVT and 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The passenger space in the new WRX is now more spacious with increased shoulder room for all passengers and increased legroom in the rear. The standard 60/40 split folding rear seats now fold flatter and the trunk opening is wider. We are driving the top Sport Tech trim with soft-touch seats with ultra-suede inserts and red stitching, the larger 11.6” touchscreen with navigation, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, sunroof, power driver’s seat, manual passenger seat, proximity key with push button start, heated rear seats, 18” wheels and LED steering responsive headlights with high beam assist. There are a few features on this top trim that you can get on the middle Sport model like the sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system and the larger touchscreen without navigation. Fuel economy for the WRX is 12.7L/100km, 19 MPG in the city and 9.4 L/100km, 25 MPG highway.

    I saw this review months ago and along with other reviews and a test drive, I decided to order one!
    Mine is a CVT top trim in Red. I've had the car for one week and I'm loving it! the thing that stood out the most for me is the joy in low speed cruising, yes acceleration gives a lot of thrills but I can get that from a lot of other cars and EVs are particularly fast off the line, this WRX is fun even at slow speed! the interior is quite spacious as well.
    the CVT, as explained by Motormouth, tries to mimic dual clutch, and is honestly pretty good.

    The looks grow on you. I easily get 26 mpg with the CVT or let’s say exactly what my last AWD SUV got. Maybe 1% of my driving is to the limit, need a manual type stuff. It’s safe, fun and easy to drive. I don’t want to emasculate anyone but the announcer touched on this.. my wife loves it and I’m really happy for her. She never felt comfortable in any of my other toy cars. I really think they hit the mark they where aiming for here. All you guys saying you hate the looks, will change your minds in the years to come. Same old story for every gen WRX or STI. People hate the looks. Then appreciate them. Listen up. Subaru was never known for the prettiness of their vehicles. They are supposed to be rugged, outdoor machines. Subaru isn't Mercedes. I'm glad it looks different. Not the same old cookie cutter sporty sedan like everyone else offers. Mines coming next month. But driving a WRX with a CVT should be illegal.

    I miss my 2015 WRX but I gave it up around 80-90k miles because the CVT started to buck and I even had Subaru replace the transmission under warranty and when I got it back it was not any better. It got to the point when I would merge into traffic on the highway or interstate the car would rev after accelerating and it would not go anywhere and I felt like I had zero control over the car. Another reason I decide to trade mine in 6 years later is that I really wanted the Android car play and many of the safety features you see now in standard vehicles. But it was very fun to drive when I had it and it was the most fun car I ever owned. However, it was the first CVT to ever go into the WRX so I would consider buying another one at some point.

    Just got mine, 2024 comes with eye-sight which is suprisingly great, specially they figured it out on a manual. Coming from a BRZ, was sad to let it go, but Alberta winter is so brutal, can't live with it. WRX hasn't dissapointed at all. Its more polished, more comfy, more casual drive compare to RWD sports coupe. Well done Subaru!

      How is the ground clearance on the 2024 WRX? It's 5.4 inches, right? Is that really enough? My 2019 Mazda 3 sedan (for example - 6.1 inches) used to scrape while entering and exiting simple driveways, and that was always a huge concern for me. Had to be ultra careful.

      @alan1as1 Před 2 měsíci

      @@DanielBeard-bt7mn Coming from a BRZ, WRX is huge improvement. These measurement itself doesn't tell the whole story, its the approach angle. For example, corolla is 5.5 same as BRZ, but BRZ struggles everywhere compare to corolla. WRX on the other hand does much better offroading amongest sedans.

    Im in Australia and I bought the top of the line wagon. I was expecting to hate it due to it being a CVT but after driving it, its nothing like any CVT I've ever driven. For me, its the perfect balance of practically and performance. Its defintely not perfect, for its price point its missing things it should really have. No ventilated front bumper (my 16k Kia rio has that) no ventilated seats, no premium audio, and its too quiet. Being AWD, the giant tunnel makes it only a 4 seater, you'd only want to transport a 5th person in a pinch. The only other good wagon here is the Mazda 6 Atenza at around the same price point and has all those extras bar the AWD. Thats just my view

      I'm in Australia too. You've already got yours?? How?? I pre-ordered a base manual sedan (in silver) on the 2nd day pre-orders opened in early April and they tell me it's just started to be manufactured and should be delivered no later than Oct! Possibly September if I'm lucky!
      Can't wait for it to be honest. For city driving (and even on highways) I slip it out of gear and coast when I get to speed in my old Impreza RS and only really drive it hard when overtaking or merging, turning at intersections with oncoming traffic etc. So I imagine I'll get better fuel economy than advertised other than when out to deliberately have fun with it on a track or off-road etc.

      Very true. I bought the base manual due to smaller wheels and thicker tires. Makes for a more comfortable ride but still grippy-fun. I just didn't want all that tech. as i have that in my SUV. Still comfortable on a long drive, and I get a laugh at those burble-booms from the muffler.

    Not sold on the exterior design, but at least it's consistent with Subaru's design language. The bigger issue for me is the fuel economy. It's terrible compared to the competition - and with premium fuel, that matters so much more these days. That alone is a deal breaker IMO.

    The WRX hasn't looked good to me since 3rd generation. When I heard the car accelerate, I thought it sounded like CVT. I guess the positive for them having a CVT is that it causes increase in manual sales! But for me I wouldn't bother even looking at this because I'd rather a hatch than a sedan. So I'm one who won't get over there not being a hatch.

Pitch in a few more dollars and get a Model 3, faster off the line and the difference in fuel prices will pay it back big time. Yes, the VW GTI is a smaller and more compact vehicle (along with the Golf R). However, that's an advantage over the 2022 WRX. Honestly, if I wanted the space typically available in a Mid-size car, I'd _buy_ a Mid-size. Nearly every car brand has absolutely decimated the Compact Car Class starting a handful of years ago. This version of the WRX is bigger than previous models. Not everyone wants that. The so-called compact Jetta GLI is the very same size as the mid-size Passat from just a few years back. Thankfully the GTI and Golf R are still *actual* compacts.
    Rather surprised that the Mazda 3 Turbo sedan or hatchback wasn't included as an alternative. That one in both styles is also AWD. A bit more upscale than the WRX. But the price difference isn't huge.

    I ordered a new 2022 WRX Premium. I will be bringing paint to the dealership on delivery day so I can paint the plastic cladding before leaving for home. Would hate to be seen driving it otherwise. I have had 2 previous WRX's, a 2003 and a 2011. Loved them both. The 2003 was ugly but in a good way. This one with the plastic takes ugly to the butt level. Buyers, put aside $2000 for a pro paint job on the fender flares and portions of the back bumper. Remember, all that crap has to be removed, sanded and replaced and the paint alone will be $500.
