      Another commenter pointed out that Meadow saved Tony twice but Chase goes to great lengths to show she can’t save him this time. First time was when she was calling for him and he was in a coma thinking he was Kevin Finnerty. He almost handed over his briefcase to Steve Buscemi which represented his life but he heard a girls cries, Meadow, which woke him up out of the coma. Second time was Meadow taking the basement lamp to college which thwarted the FBI from getting incriminating evidence on Tony as the basement was where he discussed “business” with associates. But Meadow attempting to parallel park her car kept her from sitting next to Tony, being in the line of fire and thus thwarting MO guy. With no one sitting next to Tony, the MO guy came out of the bathroom, an homage toTony’s favorite Godfather scene, and whacked Tony.

      Super old thread, but I just watched it for the first time, so. I think “Don’t Stop Believing” ties up the general theme of the show, or one of them. The song is about reaching for something in life, you may never achieve it but you’ve got to try. Tony is constantly depressed about the mundane nature of life, but even after the gunshot and coma he never changes. The rest of his family is moving on; Carmela might become a successful real estate developer, Meadow might become a successful lawyer, even AJ might make it into show business. But Tony is right back where he started, having learned nothing, and look what that gets him- shot in the back of the head and cut to black. Like the shark that he is, he stopped moving and now he’s dead.

    Ti could be taken two ways. One, tony dies. He looks up everytime someone enteres the door the you see his POV of who enters. The last time he looks up he sees blackness. Becaause as soon as the door opens, pow. bullet to the brain.
    The other option is that is the last time WE as the audience see tony. its a commentary on viewing a tv show. We want the show to go on and on . But the show has to end. So, they literally just ends while the characters and life go on and on. And this is just where we, as the audience have to get off. Tony is always going to be looking up when the door opens to see if its someone there to kill him. But we as the audience are no longer part of their story, so.. blackness.

    They do make it obvious that Tony was killed. The sequence of shots in the diner make it perfectly clear, plus the conversation with Bobby about "you probably don't even hear it when it happens" in season 6B, which they flash back to in the Blue Comet episode. All that, PLUS the fact that the first episode of season 6 is titled "Members Only" and Tony gets shot in that episode. How many clues do you need?

    in my opinion, the explanation is that there is nothing to explain: what you see, is what you get: a song that plays 'don't stop' and then it stops, leaving spectators behind looking desperately for meaning, while there is no other meaning than that it stops. there is some mild irony in that: the makers are playing us, because humans cannot help themselves: they need meaning, and if it isn't given to them on a plate, they will fill the void with their own phantasies and speculations. but it is almost as life itself: there is no meaning and it simply stops.

    Tony got shot by the guy in the Members Only jacket, who had entered the bathroom just off to Tony's Right and behind him, a perfect angle for him to take Tony out the moment that he exited the bathroom again.
    This was also a reference to the most famous scene in the original "The Godfather," when Michael (Al Pacino) goes to the bathroom and retrieves a revolver from behind the toilet tank that he later uses to whack his rival and the crooked cop (played by Sterling Hayden, btw).

    This was perhaps one of the most creative endings of any show. POV from Tony, so when Tony loses consciousness, all goes to black. If guy in Members Only jacket put bullet in Tony's brain, this is resultant POV. Contrast this to the hackneyed, film school cliche endings of character lying in pool of blood with camera zooming out, while some corny music is played of most other shows.
    I loved 'Breaking Bad' but the cartoonish A-Team-like machine gun gag in finale was a great disservice to that series.

    • @jakepurdy894
      @jakepurdy894 Před 9 měsíci

      @@marvinallen7117four years later, but I’ll explain. He didn’t necessarily say Tony didn’t die, and he implied there were clues, but he said it was also left up to interpretation what actually happens. So you can go with the Tony got shot, you can go with some sequence where Tony survives. Personally, it was obvious the ending signified Tony getting whacked. But because of how it shows that, the viewer is allowed to interpret however they do as explained by David Chase. I agree with others that it was purposely not explained because despite it being implied Tony’s brains are splattered on his wife and son, it leaves it open ended for something down the line if David Chase wanted to. And if James didn’t die maybe we would have gotten a sequel rather than a prequel to the show.

  • @davidst.hubbins5285
    @davidst.hubbins5285 Před 5 lety +1

    The last episode didn’t complete the story arc. It had exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and then it just cut off. It didn’t have proper closure or resolution. It was frustrating because it was awkward and jarring, and at first I thought there was some technical issue with my television, as did many people. Whether Tony lived or died wasn’t the issue; it was the fact that the episode just stopped midstream, which was bad television/story telling on every level. It wasn’t artistic or innovative and it didn’t work. It was a glaring mistake and poor use of craft.

    My father always said you never hear the gunshot that takes you out. I figured that the very uncool guy looking at Tony took him out when he comes out of the bathroom. My disappointment was we didn't get any information about the family. These mob guys always fire off more then one shot. He would have been firing from a slightly higher position, in Tony's blind spot (I think) so he might have shot Carmela & AJ. too. Collateral damage, perhaps? The only one we know (probably) wasn't shot was Meadow because she's just opened the diner door at the moment Tony is killed.

  • @StephenDeCesare
    @StephenDeCesare Před 7 lety +1

    I think it can be taken one step further and say that the whole family got whacked - because they wouldn't want anyone from Tony's family to come out with information for revenge on anyone in the Mafia because of Tony's killing. That's just my opinion but I say all of his family got killed.
