To me, the ending left us with the same uncertain feeling that Tony must have felt every day - Not knowing if he was going to live or die - Not knowing what could go wrong next. When you live that lifestyle, you're going to constantly be living with fear and anxiety - wondering when, not if, you're going to get killed or pinched. At the end of the show when it cuts to black, it leaves us wondering if Tony lives or dies, gets pinched, or if anything even happens at all. This is the panic and anxiety Tony felt every day, and it's why he needed to live the rest of his life on Prozac. He lived in constant worry, and that's the feeling the ending left us with. At least that's what I got out of it.

I watched it when it was on HBO. I clearly remember DC saying in an interview, shortly before the series' end, that he was considering a continuation of TS's, possibly in a movie. I believe he wanted to keep all options open. He loved James Gandolfini and wanted to work with him again (and did, in "Not Fade Away"), but that dream died when Jimmy did. This interview was before that infamous final scene, and no one, even DC himself, anticipated how much discussion, debate, and deconstructing it would provoke. The prevailing idea, at that time, was that life went on for the Sopranos; we the audience was just no longer privy to it...
So in essence, your theory may be quite correct.
Edit: The fact David's now directing a prequel to The Sopranos shows that the "end" of TS was never going to be final...I myself still stand on the side of Tony continuing on with his life after "Made In America".

15 Reason Why The Sopranos is the best Tv series of all time?
1- Best writers ever. (Characters, quotes, character arks, stories...)
2- Best directors ever. (These directors are best Hbo directors. So best tv directors same time.)
3- Best actors and real acting style ever.
    4- Best music choice ever.
5- Best sound and editing ever.
    6- Best cinematographies ever.
7- Best dark humor ever. (Better than many other comedy series!)
8- Best references and deep sub texts ever.
9- Best pilot episode ever an best final ever.
    10- Best opening title ever.
11- Best final titles ever. (I think The Sopranos is the first TV series to put a different ending credits song for each episode. Am I right?)
12- Best sociopath anti-hero ever. (There are no other Tony Soprano and James Gandolfini on TV! Even in the cinema! He is a very unique character and a very unique character work!)
13- Best psychoterapy scenes and best dream scenes ever. (It's better than the dream scenes of "Twin Peaks". Because our dreams are not like dream scenes in Twin Peaks. Our night dreams or nightmares are always be like the dream scenes of The Sopranos.)
14- The best and most realistic mafia/ganster stories, relationships, conflicts, tensions, assassinations/whack.
15- The first TV series to bring cinema aesthetics to television.
16- Started Tv's Golden Age! (Without The Sopranos and Tony Soprano; then it would not have happened: The Wire, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Narcos, Dexter, House of Cards, The Shield, In Treatment, Entourage, Eastbound & Down, Louie, After Life, Weeds, Californication, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwoods, Damages, The New Pope, Rome, Tudors, Sons of Anarchy, Rescue Me and others ...)
So... Simpley the BEST TV SERİES EVER!!! The only bad thing about The Sopranos: If you love Sopranos, you no longer like other TV shows. You always compare with The Sopranos... :)

I love you James, miss you. The intro of the show is so awesome, that I fins myself watching over and over. I had family that lived in New Jersey. I know all about the New Jersey turnpike. Watching the beginning is awesome.

I think part of what made this show great and is something alotta people don’t mention is the New Jersey setting. If it was set in NY it just wouldn’t be the same.
I felt like the Jersey setting is what made them feel like underdogs with a blue collarish, DIY mob style that had its moments of luxury but plenty of grit to balance it out!

As someone from New Jersey. I can tell you that north New Jersey in particular where it takes place is very stressful gritty place.” It’s very hustle and bustle even in the suburban neighborhoods. New Jersey only allows people born here to live. An outsider could never live here due to the fact that it is so raw.

Finished the show 3 days ago for the first time didn't know what was going to happen I was expecting Tony to die at the end and the final scene to be his funeral, but I'm glad it didn't end like that I was disappointed when a I first watched it, but going back this ending honestly is the best you could come up with it lets you form your own opinion about what happened to Tony

I didn't want a Hollywood ending. I wanted an ending. 6 Seasons and all we got is a blank screen? I hated it. I wanted closure, dead or alive or whatever! An ending like Breaking Bad, brilliant and gave me closure and ended the story.
