Restoring World War I Trench Lighter - Antique Lighter Restoration & Repair

- This World War I Trench lighter in in dire need of restoration and repair. It's missing some parts and rusted badly. I started restoring this lighter long ago but I continued now because I finally came up with a plan to make new screw for the bottom. Th lighter was made by Imco. You've seen me restore number of Imco lighters previously. They have usually interesting mechanics. Unlike the previous lighters, this design was also made by other manufacturers.
This lighter did not have many parts to disassemble. I left the cap attached to the body because it was riveted on and removing it would have cause unnecessary damage to the body I can mask the cap during nickel plating to keep the parts in their original colors.
After disassembly the rust was removed with electrolysis and the body was polished. I didn't have too much damage from the rust and the whole body was covered by patterns so I wouldn't have sanded it much anyways. After polishing the pars were decreased with acetone. the cap was pianted with nail polish so it will be protected from plating. If this as not done I would remove the plating from the cap afterwards. Then the parts cleaned with acid bath and electrolysis and put into the green nickel plating bath.
While the nickel plating was going on, I made new screw for the bottom. I used 8 mm brass rod. I don't have metal lathe but I wont let that stop me. I used files to shape the rod to the wanted shape and added threads. then I bent a thin wire so it formed a ring. I drilled a hole trough the screw and put the ring on it.
I used ketchup to polish the used brass parts. Ketchup has vinegar and enzymes that help with cleaning the brass. It's also readily in nice paste form so it's easy to apply on the surface and it doesn't smell like vinegar.
After the plating was done I assembled the lighter. The screw was perfect! During the assembly I still needed to add the second missing part. It was a really simple fabrication, however I was lucky that my first estimation for the correct length was correct. The lighter works really well and is one of the coolest lighters I've restored. I also was inspired to make short scene WWI flashback scene. It turned out to be more distressing than I originally thought but let's not forget WWI was very brutal so maybe that's how it fel like in the trenches.

Is there a certain type of lighter you'd like to see restored? Please let me know!
anything quirky you find.
Zippo lighters
By any chance do you know what country used this type of lighter? I am sure they were all different.
@WGIYV Wow Thank you. The reason I asked, As strange as it my sound today but my father fought in WW1 for the Kaiser and Germany. He was 60 when I was born. Long story. Like everyone back in those days everyone would had smoked most pipes. He was actually Prussian. The long and the short of it all he my have had one of them. He came to the us in 1923. Thank you for answering so fast.
How about the 1st electronic lighter in Germany.. Produced by Rowenta.. Works with a 22.5V battery cell...

Why was everything so much cooler and fancy looking back in then
Because they were made to last and look cool
J R okay boomer

@@wafercrumbsowo7557 honestly it's people like you who overuse and ruin the joke :/
Cuz mass production now, it’s all about money and not so much about lasting, the pride put into the work, the looks, etc
That "look to the past" bit looks like an intro to some horror game. Nice!
Thanks I got inspired to do something creative for the video
I mean if you think about it, it was _definitely_ an "intro" to a horror movie/game.
@@OddTinkering Not only your restorations are awesome, but the way you present them as well! Also, thank you for the heart! Nice to be noticed by favourite restorer. ;> Your old consoles restorations brought me here, since there's not much of it here, with so much dedication, and those are still my favourite. Although your restorations of antiques are also absolutely awesome, and watching them brings me comfort. :>
I never thought of video games. At first, before it faded to look like it was the past and all we saw was the hands shaking as he light the lighter, and we could hear the frantic breathing, I automatically thought of a veteran having a flashback. But then my grandfather was in WWII and my dad was in Vietnam and I heard about them having flashbacks.
It actually reminds me of Artyoms lighter from the Metro games.
My mom: Why is all the ketchup gone??
Me holding my super sweet shiny trombone: idk
I did electrolysis for a homework and all the electricity in my house just gone, then my mom went crazy cuz she was seeing tv or something 😆😆
I thought the ketchup was a troll had to check so it was not posted at April 1st XD
Must've been the wind
One time in band camp...
The way u switched from restoring a cool object to the harsh reality of its past. Cool af
imagine someone randomly in the street asks you for a lighter and you pull this out
Cannon I’d steal it
lol
Cannon I once pulled one of those big fuckoff joke lighters when a mate asked me for a light. Should’ve seen his face lmao.
You get the girls!
Boomer lighter.
Me : that looks like ketchup
Me : wait a minute, that's actually a ketchup?
KETCHUP IS AN INDUSTRIAL CLEANER, AS COKE AND MANY 'foods'...
he use ketshup and not vinger (that have inside the ketshup) cause of the smell. ketshup don't have stong vinger smell.
(at least that what he wrote last video)
I prefer Taco Bell mild, but they both work great.
Brown sauce or HP sauce works better.
Mein Liebe I thought that too
"so we're gonna put nail polish on this part so that it doesn't get plated"
Me: okay yeah that makes sense
"And now we'll use ketchup to clean the brass
Me: Now just wait a damn minute.
Underrated comment ^
You probably know why he used ketchup by now but in case you don’t let me tell you. The enzymes and vinegar in ketchup help get rid of oxidation and corrosion in metal without rusting it.
we know that ketchup has vinegar, but did not know we could use it in this way.
@@dallas4882 ok, I can see why you might care about this stuff. But I just can't see mr. AAAAAAAAHHHHHH I NEED A MEDIC BAG actually performing this process.
I mean, you can use coca cola to clean quite a few things, and it will dissolve the buildup on car battery terminals. So using ketchup to clean brass actually doesn't surprise me.
the ghost of the veteran who owned that lighter thought "finally, my legacy has been restored"
That’s the best joke I’ve heard all day.
The veteran who owned that lighter thought "oh no Im dead :c"
Raine they also said “why’d he put my lighter in ketchup?”
Lol

Love the creativity at the end portraying a young man in the war desperately clinging to his little trusty trench lighter. Keep up this amazing work. You're an *Artist* !

It deserved an Oscar

Nice job restoring history and the actual feeling of a frightened soldier. I’m seventy three years old and I know that feeling in the jungles of Vietnam. I also got the same feeling when jumping out of a plane in the dark.
Weird flex but ok ( jk)
Thankyou for your service!

Prolly lieing
@@HoodRichforeign Possibly so, but i don't know one way or another. I choose to thank him on the basis of what I read, happy in the knowledge that if it is a lie or a bloat then we all reap what we sow eventually :)
When you pulled the outer casing out of the bath and the star pattern was suddenly visible I gasped.
Watching you took me back to my childhood, hanging out and watching my dad in his shop as he created and repaired everything and anything. Thanks for that memory.

I've had that happen..only I handed it to a friend and they looked at me and like, how do I light my cig..I show them and it's so cool to hear their reply.I have a solid brass lighter almost like this one I got in 1995 for free..

You may or may not agree but I still think this is one of your most impressive restorations, and that’s saying something. Your metallurgy, technology/consumer tech knowledge and craftsmanship is unlike a lot of restoration creators out there. You also don’t cover up the past with new creative liberties, you always try to keep things as close to their original form as possible and I feel there’s a level of respect in that
I have no clue how the first one ended up in my feed, but now I've sat, enthralled, through four of these, and I'm so impressed, and want this lighter SOOOOO much, it's indescribable.
Amazing to watch the transformation. I've done this with a 1911 pistol that was in a flooded basement, placed into a plastic container, still wet and filled with silt and mud, then set on a shelf for several years. I did another one with a Husqvarna rifle from the 1870s that was in a flooded garage. My CZcams channel has me using them to do complete armorer's level tear downs and reassembly. I wish I had taken before/after pics, or thought to do restoration videos. This is awesome.
Looks like a bunch of people would be interested if you ever started that back up as a hobby!
me to cant stop watching this guy restore lightors
I think what you do is amazing. To think that lighter is 100 years old is quite astonishing. To take things in the states you get them and to make them new again is a talent that not too many people have. Ive subd and liked
It definitely shows the craftsmanship from back then. That was a beautiful lighter. And better than ever today!
I have the same One
Which still works😄
WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER COOL what you did at the end - - - like you were a WW1 Soldier in the trenches .... Scared and using the lighter to see !!!!!! AMAZING!!! Also, the Restoration was Top-Notch!!
History has been very respectfully restored in this piece. Top marks.
electrolysis never fails to captivate me, it's so mesmerizing
Sir, you are the master of "attention to detail" and that is one of the reasons I so enjoy watching your videos.
Now THIS is the way to start a morning!
"Haha that kind of looks like ketchup-"
"Ketchup will help me clean the brass"

I found a replica of one of these lighters in the trash at my job, knew nothing about it. Months later, stumble upon this video and it helped me to complete the restoration bu adding that missing piece of wire to the cap. Hell yeah man. Thanks
Now this, this is good stuff. Tbh, your lighter restorations are among my favorites. Still love your other works, but the lighters? Just, amazing
Same I mostly come for the lighters
Imagine what this lighters seen, it's seen men get mowed down and choke on their own fluids, its seen rockets launch and nations fall. And over 100 years later some dude buys it, covers it in ketchup, And shows it to thousands of people.
Lol wtf trueee
The Lighter: *Has war flashbacks*
TeaRex_844 4th of July: exists
Lighter: Ah shit, here we go again.
I know. I was thinking the same thing.
Most of these lighters weren't used on the battlefield. They are WWI era, which means they were made during WWI, barely any have ever been in war, much less seen combat.
i don’t usually have a strong reaction to the lighters you restore but this one is SO pretty it’s now my life’s mission to find one for myself. jot this down for when i inevitably start collecting vintage lighters.
Finally something that's a First World War relic. It's hard to believe that this was my favorite era.
Watching this while eating breakfast?
Hell ye.

Absolutely beautiful. It's amazing how creative Europeans can be. You don't see intricately sophisticated and beautiful creations like that anymore.
This video is the most visually-beautiful one I’ve seen yet. The amount of bubbles, rust, and polishing are very well captured. I had to edit to include the cinematic end.... Wow. Outstanding job!
“It belongs in a museum” - Dr Henry Jones, circa 1939
How much is it cost?
This was great! The young man who owned this lighter would be amazed that a century later another young man took the time and trouble to restore it so beautifully.
Really well done!
At first, I did not notice this beautiful pattern on the lighter.
The patent of the lighter manufacturer is really clever.
And this little story at the end of the video is a nice idea☺️.
That's really a piece of art. Great to see it restored in a new-like condition. Bravo!
Someone: Hey, do you have a light?
Odd Tinkering: *Oh, you bet your ass I do*
I'm so happy to see a person who wanted to restore a part of our story. Thanks

Another wonderful restoration... you’ve done the service officer who owned this lighter proud...
totally unexpected simulation at the end and it made me appreciate restorative works even more.
When Verdun flashbacks hit you hard
This is absolutely my new favorite video on the internet! Ending scene gave it such a nice touch! Kiitos 😍
gotta give this man some respect, he even restored footage from its original owner back in world war 1!
It dosen't matter what kind of lighter you restore I find them All fascinating. I really enjoy all of your videos.
I have a replica of this lighter, its awesome to see someone bring a piece of history back from the brink.

The ending omg the sounds - i wasn't watching the video and i thouoght you were doijng something dirty.

The re-enactment at the end was a nice touch...
The machine gun fire and sounds of people dying in the background are a nice touch 👌
Damn that was a really nice touch at the end

I had the exact same lighter, got it at a flea market many, many years ago. Sold it to a collector a couple years ago , he just had to have it and I was glad to let him put it in his collection. Very cool video, helped me remember the past in more ways than one.

I always imagine the person who made the lighter stumbling onto your video 100+ years later. They would be so happy and fulfilled to see the love you put into restoring those treasures!
One of the best videos I have seen on youtube, when not even a single word was said. That simulation of trench at the end was minnnnd blowingggg sir. Thank you. God bless you.
Odd Tinkering - "I need some vinegar"
Odd Tinkering - *Grabs ketchup*
Vinegar - "Am I a joke to you?"
Thats basically what ketchup is besides tomatoes so
he used ketchup because it isn't as strong as vinegar, and so it would clean it properly without damaging the brass
Thanks man. When I see yours videos I forget all my troubles a few of minutes.
I was so not prepare for the ketchup. Not only this satisfy me for the lighters part, but also got so many new knowledges which might benefit me later on. Cool stuffs you learn from the internet.
damnn, those breathing sounds at the end got me, sheesh

Great restoration and replacement of the missing parts 👍
I have the same exact lighter I found in my dad's stuff when he passed but in like new condition.

When using dye to tap a thread it is advisable to back off a quarter turn every full turn to clear the dye.
Genuinely good advice, but I'm wondering where a die is called a dye?
Yes bit of a boo boo there, definitely is die, my apologies.
@@grahamparr4710 I knew from your suggestion that you absolutely knew how to use a tap & die, I just wondered (knowing there's variations in spelling around the English speaking world) if there was somewhere where dies were called dyes. :)

That is a beautiful piece. Good job on your restoration.
I had a old Betty Jet lighter years ago. Unfortunately, it was stolen. But it had a interesting trick. Hold it on it's side and it shot the flame down to light your pipe. There is a metal bar inside it, that heats up and creates a "torch" effect. Very cool! I paid a dollar for mine at a garage sale, but on Ebay, $60-$80 each... A little rich for me. But I would say it's worth it.
Nicely done! I restored two of these and found getting the exact length and bend (to the light brass bar stock that lifts the cap off the wick) was a challenge.
I actually have one of these that my father gave me and I took it to Iraq with me in 2007.
