Restoring Worlds Smallest Lighter - Vintage Lighter Restoration & Repair

- This mini lighter in missing some parts and it is in general very dirty and in need of full restoration. The lighter is very small only an inch or 2.5 cm tall. It’s the smallest lighter I’ve ever seen. It used to be nickel plated but the plating has worn off. The plating has to be restored. I also need to make a new screw for the flint because it would be very hard to find one.
I took off all the easy to remove parts and washed the lighter. Then it was put to rust remover. Rust removers basically work similarly to vinegar or other acids so they also work on brass. If you leave parts in there for too long they might dissolve so I usually do something else with brass. This time I thought the cap mechanism might unjam after treating it with rust remover. But it broke. Probably the spring was already so damaged the little acid broke it. Remember that I almost always put my lighter spring in rust remover and this is the first time something has broken. After the rust remover I washed the parts with water again to remove the rust remover. Notice what I did there? Remove the rust remover.
Brass can usually just be polished without sanding, unless there are some major pits in it. Brass is so soft the buffing wheel will wear it down pretty fast. This was the case with the lighter as well. So I polished the parts without sanding. I use a wool wheel with metal polishing compounds.
Then it was tome to make a new screw. I wanted it to have sort of knurling for better grip but I don’t have the tools to do “real” knurling. So I came up with a plan. I used a socket to create the knurling. I hammered a piece of brass rod in a socket which had number of “teeth”. The brass is so soft the teeth easily made nice evenly spaced lines to the rod. Then I drilled a hole to the rod. I made a thread on a smaller brass rod. The smaller rod was soldered in the drilled hole. Again my apologies for blocking the screen. I would usually re-film that but I didn’t want to remake the whole screw for couple seconds of footage. After soldering the screw was polished like the other parts.
The polished parts were electroplated with nickel in plating bath. If you want to learn more about this technique. Go check out my tutorial about it on my other channel, Odd Experiments.

Day 6433: I'm still on the hunt for this illusive "Liquid Ice" that I've heard so much about. My food supplies ran out months ago, so I've been getting along by eating rusty old lighters and power tools. They do not taste good, but are nutritious. My iron levels are off the bloody charts.
I may need to come steel some 😂😂😂 kill me....
Day 6821: I was on the verge of death in the desert when an old man saved me and gave me an ancient map of the location of the "*Liquid Water*"... Also got some food supplies. Planning to follow the map... Only God knows what lies ahead...
PS. Let's continue this story...❤️
@@priyambiswas9832 Day 6983: Every sand dune looks like the last, the food supplies have nearly been depleted, and I seem no closer to the liquid ice than I was a miles worth of desert ago. I've got to keep going, but I'm not sure if my body will let me.....
"off the bloody charts"😂
Day 7000: I've reached the edge of the continent. There's nothing but open ocean as far as the eyes can see, but still no Liquid Ice. The map had a big red X on the ocean. Perhaps it's underwater, like sunken treasure? At least I've made it to a town, so I can stock up and get some diving gear.
The hunt continues, but my stomach is killing me. I went to relieve myself and out came a bolt. Maybe eating those rusty power tools wasn't such a smart move after all...

You make restoring a cheap lighter from the fifties a fine art
A definite change in time. From made in China back to the era of made in Japan.
Made in Japan, good quality there. China sucks.
When I was growing up Japan built goods were thought to be a bit dodgy, but that quickly Changed , Japanese built good quality and became a great supplier of goods.
FUCK CHINA
I'm not sure why but lighter restorations are really interesting and cool. It's what brought me here after all.
This unique little keychain originally had a small piece of thin black leather around the fuel housing. You can see by the little lips that protrude out. Even without it the restoration is magnificent. Appreciate your dedication to your craft. Thanks.

Putting lighter restorations on the map. You just raised the bar on it. Top notch 🔥💯👌
I think this one may be my favorite of your lighters, just because of the detail on such a tiny lighter. Love it and love how you carefully restored it
Love the way you manufactured the missing screw, ingenious.
I feel so peaceful watching this.
Legitimately spent twenty seconds trying to figure out what Liquid Ice was.
I thought it was gonna be a quick one until he said, "let's make a screw."
Hello! I was cleaning out the house of my recently deceased WW2 grandfather. I have one of these! Funny, he fought in Germany only, but his household had a lot of Japanese items. I can't wait to restore mine. It's in amazing condition.
When I was in the fifth grade a friend had one of these I wanted one so bad that was 1957.
Who rolls their lighter in dirt?
TheAxeGrinder It looked like tobacco. Maybe it was used to light a pipe or something.
maybe they tried to give it a proper burial after it met it's untimely demise. sadly wasn't able to meet it's maker but it actually got to meet a cooler maker, Odd Tinkering. so, lighter asks him. "can you give me back my soul, please :3" and Odd T. said to him "i can't, but let's make a new one". and they lived happily ever after.
And I was imagining all those dead skin cells on it.
I do.
Maybe the ones who want their video thumbnail to be more compelling..
i’m *so* ashamed at how long the “liquid ice” bit went completely over my head...
i’ve brought dishonor to my family

Making that screw without having machining equipment was ingenious. That's a really neat lighter, well done on the restoration.
A true testament to the quality of the old ways of manufacturing where each product is made with pride and made to last as opposed to our disposable world today....

Believe it or not, I used to have a lighter that was built almost exactly like that, and it was even smaller than this one. You're the best restoration-er I've ever seen on this platform.
I mean, I've seen enough Philippinos trying to "restore" something "found" in the middle of nowhere, they even include the footage when they're finding it. To make it more believable I guess.
Most of them doesn't know what they're doing, one of them tried to measure the resistance of the board of an old beaten up smartphone with analogue multimeter.
When they're cleaning something (usually placed under water and scrubbed violently without worrying if it gets damaged)
that the serial number of the board changes.
Ye, they just scrub harshly with like a brush you'd use to clean a grill or something. Pretty sure (If it doesn't have lead) is to place it in liquid ice and vinegar is from some videos I have seen on other channels.
I have a fairly large collection of lighters myself (mostly early 1990's novelty lighters with a few antiques sprinkled in), so it's hard for me to say which is my favorite, I will say this one is the most impressive to date since you had so many issues and tiny parts to work with.
This man just made his own screw that was lit
"Liquid Ice" ah, yes, water haha

"It's supposed to be used as a keychain. Otherwise something this small will just get lost."
So you're telling me that if I get my hands on one of these I can lose my keys and my lighter at the same time? Well isn't that just a fantastic bargain.
Thank you for this video! You did an absolutely incredible job. I have the exact same lighter, in perfect working condition. I just didn't know how to use it. The flint was screwed in too tight to turn the wheel. Love your videos.
You have repairing lighters down to a science. Great video.

As always, an utterly beautiful and engrossing revival. Thanks.
Why did it have loose potting soil on it? Was that just to make it look worse than it really was?
I doubt it. Mostly likely was found like that -.-
So you reckon he just found it in his garden immediately before filming? Because that dirt was literally falling off. I would bet he bought it on eBay or something and deliberately crudded it up to make his amazing restoration more impressive.
Eh maybe. He still had a small lighter to restore either way With or without dirt
Someone else pointed out it might be tobacco. Perhaps someone rolled their own cigarettes on the fly and kept this tiny lighter inside their bag of tobacco?
Okay soo “liquid ice” is just water right? Or am I missing something 🤣

So do you buy old stuff and then burry it in dirt so it gets all rusty and beat it up to make it look even worse? I know this is a common practice among Restoration channels just curiously you do this as well?
My thought exactly. That soil washed off way to easy and revealed clean metal underneath?
Tim Nickels I have spoken to a few people that do these restoration videos. It’s a common practice to buy stuff from pawn shops and antique stores and they burry it in dirt outside for days weeks, months and even years just to get the right amount of “super old look”
I honestly don’t have a problem with it just think it’s interesting to see what people do to create content.
