If you’re in the market for a new bike, NOW is the time!
Been riding hardtails since 88, Oh rigid! Have the Nuke Proof Scout now. Love It. Switched to 27.5, XT, WBT wheel set up. Can crank uphill all day, downhill is a dream. Hardtails will never die
I have a Giant Fathom 1. It comes with everything you would need for some aggressive biking except for the fact that the rear caliper is 2 piston. Swap out the grips and rear caliper and you're good to go for some serious riding. I personally swapped the factory Ardent Race tires out for an Assegai in the front and a MInion DHf in the rear because I live in Norcal where the trails are always wet and filled with leaves and debris. I strongly recommend it because it's cheaper than every other bike on this list at $1850 USD and comes with roughly the same components.
As a heavier rider (pushing ~280, 6'2") went with the new Surly Krampus - mostly due to the frame flexibility for larger tires, the feel of steel on the road, and the updated specs vs older models. Its a beast and pretty heavy, but I can transition it to a Bikepacking bike if I get there and get a full sus as a second bike. My only negative is the super short dropper tube.
My first hardtail was a 2013 Trek Wahoo 29er in a beautiful matte blue and white
Absolutely love Commencal. I'm on my third. Started with a the old HT Trail, moved on to the HT AM, and now have a full sus AM.
I've just picked up a Whyte 909 V4. Super light, fully loaded! Super impressed with performance, especially from the Pike Ultimate fork and SRAM GX Eagle drive train. It's not the best looker but it's definitely a great performer :)
so happy that the marin san quentin is here I personally use the san quentin 1 (upgraded the handlebar and the seatpost to a dropper one) that's all and I just love the way it looks feels and shreds
I just commented on your budget hardtail video about Nukeproof bikes. Glad to see it here.
Picked up my Roscoe 9 a couple of days ago, can't wait to get out on the trails!
Oh SNAP!!! Happy trails! Go rip it up!
Good choice I just pick my roscoe9 up yesterday
Just bought the roscoe 8 at a discount for trek fest. I am very pleased with what I got! I had a roscoe 6 2020 before and this feels so much better than what the roscoe was before
That's what I'm getting ready to pick up I'm excited
I’ve got the big al 1.0 in purple absolutely love it , I installed magura mt5 brakes . Brand x 200mm dropper ergon grips , CB stamp 2 pedals . Nukeproof stem . Love it
YES!!! That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing and the comment! 🤘🏻
I have 2 hardtails in the stable, the Big Al is just so good. I love it so much I splurged for the XO AXS drivetrain, I9 Enduro wheels and Code RSC brakes with a Diamond and One-Up bars & dropper she's a dream build.
I have a Nimble9 setup singlespeed with Mercury wheels and a Sapphire fork. A Revive post and Spank cockpit makes for hard pedaling bliss.
Yes I'm a total DVO fanboy.
Thanks for sharing Julian! I appreciate your support!💪🏻 That Big AL build of yours sounds dreamy! I’ve never ridden DVO suspension… hopefully sometime soon!🤞🏻
I recently got the Marin San Quentin 3 from my local bike shop, my first REAL mountain bike that's not a department store cheapie. Already sprained my leg going down a horrible local double-black like an absolute imbecile haha! The problem is I just feel WAY too confident on this bike for my skill level, it performs amazing! Definitely going to have to learn some better technique on some milder trails before attempting that again!
Respect 🫡
Getting back into MTB this year,
Picked up a Kobain a few weeks ago, they were all sold out for the season (!!!) but luckily my bike shop managed to get one for me in the specs I wanted (beige frame, shimano deore)
I love it so far, can't wait for the season to begin!
I just picked up my first aggressive hardtail. 2022 Rocky Mountain Growler 20. It's got entry lvl parts but I figured I'm a beginner rider and it's a great platform to grow with and upgrade it to suit my needs.
Honestly, starting MTB with a hardtail is the best decision you could have made! It’ll give you a fantastic foundation of skills. And if/when you move up to a full suspension bike, you’ll be unstoppable!💪🏻 Thanks for sharing Matt! I appreciate your support!
I have a Walmart hardtail I got for $300 it has disc brakes and rotors, all the gears and a pretty decent looking frame. I put some WTB double wall wheels on it, some Maxiss tires race face crank Easton bars and a azonc stem. Next is some hydraulic brakes, and I have a fox front shock I have to clean up an rebuild. Makes a good pump track bike
Man thanks for making a video like this. I’ve rode BMX since I was a kid. I’m 33 now and transitioning into mtb. I got a gang of experience with the bmx world parts and frames done a gang of custom builds. But def been learning new aspects of the mtb world and
Love to see all the different picks. Really for how much more components exist on a mtb the price ratio even for the top of the lines in this vid aren’t that bad, I’ve built kink bike frame based and S&M frame build outs for the same.
Thanks again my friend.

I had a ragley marley for 3 years, was a great bike but as a taller rider 6ft3 I always felt like a bit of clown on it haha but it was very Sturdy!
Just got myself a big Al, and still getting used to the 29er, but overall its a much better fit and feels more stable, and 4 pot brakes that I never knew that I needed, stops so well.
Big ragley fan, and the fact they will replace your frame if its breaks is a testament to how much confidence they have in their build quality!.
I picked mem up a sweet little Roscoe 7. Love it!!
Mostly ride a Transition Sentinel FS, but purchased a Cannondale Trail SE 1 recently. It has all the characteristics you describe. Just getting familiar with the bike, but am impressed so far.
Thanks for sharing Curt!👌🏻
Glad to see the Salsa at number 3. I demand adjustable drops as I only ride single. Should do another video but with hard tails over 3k. That would give you numerous Ti bikes and unique frames.
Just bought myself a Devinci Kobain deore s12 yesterday love this bike!!
Definitely interested in a 1000-2000 dollar range video. It seems like the jump in better parts from a sub 1000 hardtail is pretty significant all while not breaking the 2000 mark
Glad to see the marin sanquentin 3 getting some love.
The Orbea Laufey should definitely be on the list. I have been riding the H-LTD edition for a couple of months now and I love it!
The Laufey is a badass bike. I have one and ride it pretty much anywhere.
Best bike
Not with that fruity ridiculous name
@@DB-sd3cwYou're stupid
Received a RSD Sergeant V4 on April 27th and put almost 1,400 trail miles on it (it's one of 5 mountain bikes i own). This bike is a game changer.
I’ll check them out! Thx!🤘🏻
I have the same bike. It should be in someones top 10.
Amazing list and your video is top notch! New sub here and looking forward to more content. I’m hoping for more content and details on medium to high end mountain bikes and components with more details such as tire clearance and fork offset, plus unique features such as adjustable drop out length or cable routing options. My two newer hardtail’s are Esker Hayduke that has both a 29er and 27.5 plus wheel options and a Japhy that is 29er and I built a SS with the adjustable drop out to tension my chain. Anyway keep the videos like this coming!
Thanks! Will do!👊🏻
Wicked bikes! I ride a Vitus Sentier and it is on the list, haha. Great video mate!
Thanks! Working on more for this year… Cheers!🍻
Dartmoor Primal (Polish brand) and Whyte Enduro Hadrtail (UK brand).
I rode Dartmoor Primal once (and I own Dartmoor Hornet 4X for near 5 years now), and saw Whyte in a friend of mine.
Judging by look and feel, both of them are sick.
When ragley had the purple paint colors they looked so good. I wish trek would do more bikes in the paint color from the ticket that color is also amazing.
Man, you sure do a great job with your videos !
Ah man!!!! Thank you so much!! That means a lot! Thanks for the support!💪🏻
Awesome list! Shocked to not see the Trek Roscoe 7/8 on here. Great video!
The 2023 was already out… it’ll definitely be in the 2023 video coming soon!🤘🏻
I bought a San Quentin 3. I've had it for a few months now and love it.
Sick! Thx for sharing! A lot of people looking at that bike!
Nice! I picked up a 2019 Marin san Quentin 3 for 1500 bucks in practically brand new condition!! Upgraded to xt 2 pistons brakes, deore 11 speed 11-51 deore drive train
Just picked that Trek Roscoe 8 up yesterday in blue 🔥🔥🔥 ... OMG what a bike .. I still have the full spec gun metal roscoe 7 27.5 .. but the new one is beautiful
Oh SNAP!!! Congrats! Sick bike! 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Hello. I have a 2020 fuse comp 29”. 3000 miles on it. Love it. Shreds
Awesome list! I would include the Canyon Stoic. Great specs for the money!
Yep but its out of stock till the winter and by then the 2023 will be out. stay tuned for the 2023 list incoming soon!
I own a 2021 Marin San Quentin 3. It’s an amazing all around bike. It’s a 27.5” with 130mm of travel. It rips at the bike park, can have fun at the pump track and DJ’s, and I can hit most enduro trails in Southern California. I went 27.5” because I’m 5’9” and wanted something playful. This bike is most happy at SkyPark bike park. Stock spec is full Deore for $2400.
Have a 2020 SanQuentin 2 and love it
What size?
Absolutely love my meta HT AM Ride.
Good wrap up. I recently got a Marin SQ2 with a few upgrades.
Sick bike! Well done! How’s it treating you? Change anything on it?
@@TopToBottomMTB It’s great. New dropper lever, 203 rotors, Deore crank, oval chainring & pedals. ~AUD$2000. The Air fork is fine as are the 2 piston brakes.
easily the comparative and comprehensive vids i have seen well done
Thx homie! Glad you liked it!🤜🏼🤛🏼
I just got a Marin San Quentin 3 for 1400 brand new this video proved I made a great purchase!
I've got the trek Roscoe 7 2021 matt black but upgrading it was goin to get the whyte 901 but now I've seen this video think i will get the 8 now it looks sick. Thanx for the video
You’re in good hands either way… Thanks for the kind words! Cheers! 🍻
Kool list! would love to try a meta! As for a other brands i think a chromag doctahawk would be a fun review as for my build its a older chromag Stylus with a 150mm argyle in 26" great trail and everything bike with that 66 degree headtube angle. would love to try something in the 64, slack is fun!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! I’d love to get a Chromag in for review… I live close to them too, maybe in the near future…
I've just purchased an orbea laufey h10 2022 and love it 😀
Got a 2022 Orange Crush Pro, wicked bike having such fun on it,
Have a '17 Nukeproof Scout 290 in my quiver.... 140mm Lyrik Ultimate, 180mm Oneup dropper + Oneup under.bar remote, SLX 11-46, 11 Spd drivetrain, Kore 3.0 + DT Swiss 350 wheels, SRAM Guide R 4 pot brakes w/ 200/180mm rotors, Abs Black 30t Oval chainring, 2.5 Assegai & 2.4 Dissector rubber, Funn Fatboy 780mm bars w/ 50mm Kore stem, Chromag grips, bashguard, chainslap protection (OEM), Charge Cooker saddle...
Absolute weapon 🤘
Im about to buy one! This vid is what i needed
Sick!! Music to my ears! What are you gonna buy? If you order one using my link, you support the channel with a small kick-back and it doesn’t cost you anything! Thanks in advance!! Yew!!!🤘🏻
@@TopToBottomMTB not sure if these links work in Europe but might try later on as Roscoe is one of my picks… the other one Orbea Laufey 🤜🤛
Just discovered your channel…good job! Out of all of them, which one to ride as trail bike mostly, but bike packing if needed? I’d run 29er mostly , but 27.5+ for bike packing…
Nice! and thanks! The salsa looks good for that…
salsa timberjack 👍love the bike great for bikepacking
I'm in the UK and you can buy Commencal through Chain Reaction as well (i bought my FS Meta Trail Origin that way) but have subsequently dealt with them direct, and they are excellent.
Wow good to know! Thanks!👊🏻
I got myself the Devinci Kobain, but unfortunately it is a couple years old so mine didn't come with a dropper post & came with Rockshox. Absolutely love the bike...slowly beginning to upgrade components on it, and she just keeps getting better!
Noice!👌🏻
Thanks, awesome video - gave me a lot of more models to look at. However, perhaps not a bike available for you guys in US or Canada - but the Rose Bonero looks very interesting!
im run a Marin SanQuentin with 150mm fox fork...it sick 🤘
nice video by the way 🫶
Ahh man!! Thank you so much!! That means a lot! I’m seriously blown away with how positive and supportive the audience has been for me and this new channel! Love to have you guys in the audience! Cheers!🍻
Hi! Awsome chanel, very educational!! Do you have thoughts on Canyon Grand Canyon 9? It fits into this price range and the components even better. Oh...and Fox forks! Your answer is appreciated!
I run a Ragley Bigwig which I'm really happy with, great machine but if I had to choose another off the shelf it would probably be a Cotic BFEMax or a Bird AM Zero
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll check them out!👊🏻
You have done a extraordinary job educating us with these bikes. I would need to whatch the video again. I love how you day perfect on a few bikes when it came to geometry. My son is 15 but hes 6'2 and growing he is taking to riding at a younger age. I dont known what size bike to get him as a large may handle better being smaller. What do you think? Your in put is invaluable.
Thanks so much! If he likes dirt jumps and trials, go smaller… if he’s into riding steep trails, go with a longer reach. Cheers!🍻
I have a trek 2019 roscoe 7, i love it, but im defenetly looking into santa fe dual suspension.
Thank you for the info
Cheers!🍻
@@TopToBottomMTB salud!!!!
Bought a Growler 50, ordered it 18 months ago just picked it up. Interestingly it had Maxxis minion dhf and dhr tires and not the trail boss/vigilante that it says in the specs. Can't wait for the summer!
Congrats! You’re gonna have a blast on that!🤘🏻
Just found your channel very informative 👍🏻
I just picked up a Orange clockwork evo 29 comp 2023 £1,900.
Sick! Welcome!
Just bought a Ragley Big Al 1.0 and couldnt be happier
I was wondering where the Roscoe was! Dang, number one! I got the 8 and I love it. It’s a beast.
I just gor my first agressive HT, the brazilian Sense Hardcore Comp R, and the bike matches with the best specs of this list!
65º head tube angle
74,5º seat tube angle
430mm chain stay lenght
150mm rock shox 35 silver
Full deore 12s
4 piston shimano breaks
29X2.40 michelin tyres
but, sadly, just 125MM of dropper seatpost, in every sizes :-(
this will be little for bigger people, which is not my case lol
I didn't want a hardtail so I went with the Giant Trance X 29 2 in Amber Glow... it's only a week old and I love it so much. I've been on a Walmart bike for 2 years so this has changed my life for the better... much better!!!
If it's not too much to ask, what made you did not want a hardtail, Sir? Thanks in advance!
Yeah buddy! I had a trance before my Commencal and it was a great entry into climbing and trail riding!💪🏻
@@yengsabio5315 I rode every bike I could find, did as much research as possible and I felt that it was widely recommended that full suspension is a better option for me, my size and my riding needs. I'm not a small man and the full suspension really is a much better ride for me.
But you can do more stuff on a full squish bike than you can on a hardtail... in my opinion of course.
@@rvsbladesnthangs Thank you for responding, Sir!
Loving my RM Growler 50
Picked up an Esker Japhy and built it up from hello Dave GX group set
My cuatom hardtail trailbike comes close to the marin san quentine 3 but only cost 1400$.. mainly bcoz i bought the parts before the pandemic..i got a good find with an all xt geoupset except for the hubs..nice video man
Thanks! Yeah the pandemic was not good for parts prices and availability🥵
What do you think of the Ragley Marley? Was checking some current prices on CRC and saw the Marley 1.0, which looks to be identically spec'd to the Big Al you featured in the vid, currently going for $1230. The Big Al has gone down a bit as well, to around 1500. It usually seems like some pretty sweet bang for the buck going on with Ragleys but even more so right now.
I picked up a growler 50 about 2 months ago and I’m loving it.
Sick! Have you changed anything on it?
No cause I’m now broke
My cousin is looking to get a bike under $1000 CAD, what bike would you recommend for him.
@@crackheadexplosions8157 I’d look at the polygon Xtrada 5 or the Marin Bobcat trail 3. bikesonline-usa.sjv.io/kjdb4z
Noice! I got me self a 2023 Miami green/trek black roscoe 7 , will try to learn some trials moves, I’m putting an XT m8120 caliper on the rear and bash guard on this baby! I love it so far!
Siiiiick!🤘🏻
🤘🏾🤘🏾
Thanks for the vid. I just purchased a 22 Ragley Big Al 2.0. Seriously couldn't beat the price at CRC. Plus, I already have a fork, handlebars, stem and brakes to swap to it. I've heard many good things about Ragley, so I'm looking forward to it. Nonetheless, the move to 29er from 27.5 is gonna be so nice.
Congrats!🤜🏼🤛🏼
Never mountain biked before. Brother in law did bmx growing up and he talked me into getting a bike. Looking at the trek marlin 8 gen 3. Good choice?
That Nukeproof is just 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great vid Fella 👍🏻 . What are everybody's thoughts on a whyte 901 v4/v5 ? Any advive would be greatly appreciated ✌🏻
I have a Rocky Mountwin Fusion 40...had it 3 years and had a lot of fun in it. Less aggressive than the Growler but I just got Maxxis Minion DHF tubeless tires for it which should be neat....already have a Canyon Spectral 29 too but hard tails are fun too!
My Nukeproof Scout Comp, but with 27.5 instead of 29, gets the job done.
I just got the orbea laufey H10 and I am super happy with this one
Noice!👌🏻
I got my Giant talon 2 knight and i love it the gear is 2x9
I bought an RSD MiddleChild this season and absolutely love it! Understand you can't possibly try all the bikes, but this one's definitely worth checking out! Thanks for a great video!
Jason! Thank you so much brother! Lovin’ the support you guys are showing the channel! Yew!🤘🏻
I have one on pre-order, 29 GX in Verdigris w/ dropper
Which spec / color did you get?
@@wd99999 I got the 27.5 in Obsidian (Black) with the steel build kit. Recommendation from Steve on Hardtail Party. Better drivetrain and little more travel on the fork. I would’ve went with the Raw color, but they were sold out and they had $500 off of bikes in stock.
@@wd99999 and the bike was way better looking in person! Added a bunch of purple accessories. No regrets and I ride it like my Yeti SB 5.5. Notice the drops a bit more, but I feel like it’s making me a better rider.
Cannodale Trail SE2 I got it on sale for $1500, I’d change the Pedals, Grips but you possibly upgrade to NX derailuer & shifter or 4 piston brakes although it’s really not needed. With upgrades still less then $2000. It’s light, agile, stable I’ve ridden down double black diamond trails no problems.
Heyy fam, thank you for the wonderful video!!!! I was wondering if Orbea's MX 40 is a good deal OR could you check out the Merida Big Trail 200? Also would love to see your opinion on a few european based brands... No pressure of course!!! Thanks in advance!
P.S.: The edits in all your videos are phenomenal! Keep up the good work man
Thanks brother! I’ll check them out and get back to you!
Awesome bike 👍🤘❤❤❤
Nice to finally see the Roscoe with a thruaxle. My way cheaper Trek Superfly had one in 2013…
Yeah… things were a little cheaper back then.🥵
I rock a heavily upgraded Fuse and can vouch for it's capability and versatility. I built mine into a strong 140mm trail hardtail that chases down FS bikes on my local trails while still being capable of park and enduro riding. You can set it up single speed because of the sliding dropouts. You could build it up short travel for a "downcountry" hardtail. It is priced steep for sure, and there are more progressive hardtail but unlike other frames...the Fuse can kind of do it all.
Yo the Fuse is great! I'm still building mine up but so far what little I've done to it has made it just epic..
I started with the 27.5 base model and even then it was a ass kicker I could do just about anything in the pnw
@@SbeckMTB I'm guessing you finished your bike. Did you stick with the 27.5?
I went with the 27.5 sport model. So far I've upgraded the fork to a pike ultimate and a i9 360 back country wheel set. Got the bike down to 29 1/2lbs
@@buckroger6456my 29er came in just under 30 as well. Going from powerspline to a dub BB and cranks took a ton of weight out. Cassette upgrade also helped a lot
@@letsgo_inc I got the 27.5 sport and it was 31.09lbs. I swapped out the fork for a pike ultimate, the wheels for a i9 360 back country wheel set with the hydra hub, and the cassette for the one hug and a kiss sram 12 speed. All that dropped the weight to 29.10lbs. My next upgrade and final upgrades are the cranks, bottom bracket, brakes, rotors, rear derailleur and dropper post.
Nice!! I'm liking the nuke proof.

Great video, keep it up! :) I feel like a few bikes are missing from this list, for example the Orbea Laufey(whatever specs from this price range), the Ghost Nirvana Tour and the Canyon Stoic. Checks these beasts out! ;)
I did… unfortunately couldn’t fit the more than 60 brands into this top 10… it came down to availability and value. Thank for the support!
Can't believe u never mentioned the Orbea Laufey H10!! Great bike with great spec and very good value!!

I'm in love with it too! Something to also keep in mind while riding mtbs are helmets. Most people wear cpsc helmets (which arent safe), when they should be actually wearing an nta helmet like xnito or bern, or even a full face helmet
Got a Scott Aspect 930 2022 being delivered tomorrow. Moving from a 26" wheel to a 29" so be good to hopefully not be riding in such an aggresive position anymore as have back problems.

I am deciding between the Growler and the Scout 90, your list has the Growler way over the Scout, why is that?
I’m Canadian and so is Rocky… Both great bikes though… you can’t go wrong with either.👌🏻
Question: Any thoughts or reviews on the RSD MIDDLECHILD and components builds?
In my opinion, the Dartmoor Hornet Pro is the most underrated hardtail ever both for the price and the parts. 12x deore drivetrain, 4 piston deore brakes, 180 and 200mm rotors, 27.5 dartmoor wheels with 102t hubs, Rockshox domain 150mm travel and the frame supports 190mm travel. It also comes with a dropper post and all that for 1800-1900€.
Hi thanks for the video's bro I'm struggling with what hard tale to get what do you think about the orbea laufey H30
Orbea is👌🏻
Thanks again 💯👍👌
Cool video, plans on "Frame Only" hardtail video?
I'm looking at the Banshee Paradox and the Ragley Big Al, there is a decent price gap between the two and the numbers are really similar. Thoughts?
Thanks! I’d go Ragley… just me. This is a company that JUST makes hardtails…
Ive had my orange crush comp for few years now and is holding still with all I've put it through would defiantly buy agin when my finally dies did tubeless setup and part from pads and Tyers never been serviced and still ride fine I don't know how hahah
