  • Exclusive inside and outside cockpit views of a nice visual approach of an Eurowings Airbus A321 NEO to runway 34 at Corfu / Kerkyra Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport, CFU / LGKR, Greece. Captains first landing of an A321NEO. Cockpit, pilots, instruments, charts and sidestick views. With cockpit and ATIS (automatic terminal information service) audio. Captain is pilot flying and first officer pilot monitoring. ATC (air traffic control) callsign is Eurowings 3ZV (Eurowings Tree Zulu Victor). Commercial flight number: Eurowings EW 9612. Aircraft registration: D-AEEA. Departure airport: Dusseldorf (DUS). Produced with 6 cameras in 4k quality. In the video, you see the captain without a tie. This is not the standard. Reason is that his tie broke before the recording started and he had no spare tie available.

    I've been following you for a few years now on CZcams and since the age of 14 I've wanted to be a pilot.
    I was diagnosed with ADHD grade 5 in middle school.
    In the fall of 2022, I had the diagnosis written off and started on February 22 this year, Medical tests for class 1.
    I can proudly say that I now not only have an approved medical class 1, but I have also entered a pilot training and will start in April 2024
    I want to thank you so much for inspiring me to dare to do something that many wouldn't have dared.
    I'm going to be a pilot, and a lot inspiration from you!

They even reduce the flighttime and save some fuel. No problem about the tie. I just mentioned that because I normally always wear a tie, which is part of the uniform.

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos I once flew in there as a passenger on an approach to 34 that became a very exciting circle to land back on 16, low turn back over the harbour, great fun. I wonder what level of tailwind you would have to be facing on 34 to make the circle to land on the opposite runway a better decision?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@edmoorebsc I flew the circle to land to 16 once years ago. The hill infront of the displaced threshold makes it very challenging. Most airplanes are capable of 10 or even 15 knots tailwind. But due to the hill behind runway 34, they may have performance problems with 15 knots tailwind. I assume that they use 34 up to 10 knots tailwind and switch to 16 with more wind or if the airplanes are unable to land on 34 due to performance reasons.

      Thanks for the good feedback and for your support of my channel!!! I agree, the A321 neo is a very nice airplane. Now the old audio control panel, radio management panel and transponder panel are all combined in one panel. The frequencies can be entered via a keypad. This is a good improvement. Downside is that there is only one standby frequency for each radio. Before, both radio management panels could have different standby frequencies for one radio. Now, if the first officer changes his or her standby frequency for COM 1, also my standby frequency to COM 1 will be changed to the same frequency. Have a great day!

      Thank you so much for supporting the channel as a member and for your great feedback! The new radio management panel is nice. It combines the audio contol panel, the radio management panel and the transponder control panel in one unit. It’s good that we now can type in the new frequencies for the radios and that we both can control the transponder from this new panel. Downside is that we only can have one standby frequency for each radio. With the old RMPs, we could have 2 standby frequencies for each radio: One standby frequency displayed on the first officers RMP and a separate one on the captains RMP. With the new RMPs, the standby frequency changes in both units if one pilot changes it.

    Another great video Captain! I flew into Corfu many years ago on an Air Europe 757, quite similar in overall dimensions to the A321Neo, but obviously lacking a lot of the technology the 321 has. It always surprised me that Boeing never updated the 757, I think they missed a trick there given the sales success of the Airbus.

      Thanks for watching and for sharing your personal thoughts! I do not know about the details. But the classic A321 was already a big success and many airlines ordered it instead of Boeing 757. Maybe that the 757 is less efficient or so and needs more fuel.

      The typerating is the same .It includes A318 to A321. Everything is very similar. But we have to do a difference training for all variants before we can fly them the first time. This is also true for the NEO versions of the planes.

  • @dutypaidrock
    @dutypaidrock Před 7 měsíci +2

    Great to see a NEO on the channel! Question for you; when there is an ILS or RNAV approach available, why do you sometimes choose a visual approach? I understand this is dependant upon conditions, but is it just more fun to fly and you like the callenge or is it a company requirement you fly a certain number a month to keep the skills fresh, or something else (or a combination!)? Seems like the workload is higher, so just curious as to why you request it specifically sometimes?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for your good feedback! We can fly whatever approach we want as long as ATC approves it and the weather is in accordance to the requirements for the approach. Visual approaches are shorter than instrument approaches. They save flight time, fuel and reduce emissions. So it is always in nice weather a good idea to request a visual approach. Visual approaches are more challenging but also fun to fly. Some airports, like Dusseldorf in Germany, do not allow visual approaches of large jets because they want to have the airplane noise always at the same routings. Instrument approaches keep the planes on the appropriate track. Other airports, like Berlin or Hamburg, restrict visual approaches to a minimum certain distance and altitude. This makes it more complicated.

    Another beautiful video. As a curiosity, flying small planes. To your FOs asking advice for a good flare on A320/321 what you suggest? Do you look at the opposite thresold or closer to assess flare height?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci

      The flare in an Airbus is not much different than a flare in a Mooney or Piper aircraft. You want to reduce your sinkrate to zero at the moment you touch the runway. Compared to a small plane, you have to start a little earlier. The radio altimeter is a good help. For good results, with the Airbus A319, you may start the flare between 10 and 20 feet. With the A320 at about 20 feet and with the A321 at about 30 feet or even a little higher. Depending on the weight. I usually look along the runway. Not necessarily always to the opposite threshold. You can see this very good in all my newer videos. The radar altimeter and the vertical speed indicator and the pitch values are visible and show exactly what and when we do something in the flare.

    Good morning beautiful story as usual on bord the new plane. I have a question if you have time: The interception of the iaf (Initial point of the approach, for those not familiar with the matter) already authorizes pilot to use the ils (Instrumental landing system) or do you have to wait until faf (final point) ? Thank you , and have a good weekend to all the crew.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching and your question! If you are cleared to the initial approach fix and then for the standard ILS approach, you have to fly whatever routing or maneuver is published on the approach chart until reaching the final approach point. From the final approach point, you will then follow the localizer and the glideslope to the published decision altitude. Most of the time, you will intercept the localizer already before the final approach point. Usually, ATC provides vectors to the ILS instead of the published routing. Then you can use the ILS not before ATC tells you that you are cleared for the ILS.

    Hello Captain! I'm not a pilot myself and don't have much business with aviation other than cockpit videos with the POV of the pilots are interesting and educational, because this is something that is usually hidden from the eyes of the average Joe. Due to the lacking background I only understand half of what is going on, mainly because I've only figured out a part of what I'm actually seeing on the instruments in the bottom middle of the screen. Also a lot of the used terminology isn't obvious to casual viewer like me. Do you by chance plan to ever post a video where you go over the single elements of the instruments and give us a deep dive into what all the numbers and bars and used terminology mean? Things like speed and altitude are easy to figure out, but i.e. during landing approaches there are suddenly 3 different altitudes (the vertical scale, the altitude below the round thing in the middle and Baro nnn on top). While this display is somewhat understandable for a non-pilot, the radar screen has me lost entirely. Even after watching about a dozen or more of your videos (these videos are strangely addictive) I still haven't figured much out on what is going on on the radar display.
    Long story short, an explanation video about all the things that are going on on the instruments would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks for reading and stay safe. 👍

The terrain map shows the elevation of obstacles in relation to our altitude. Water is displayed in blue.

    hello again nice landing enjoyed this video, one question i noticed in some of ur videos during approach after disconnecting autopilot sometimes flight directors are turned off and sometimes its kept on is there like a procedure behind this because i had this doubt in my own flight simulator if i should switch off the flight directors after disconnecting autopilot

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for your good feedback! When we fly an instrument approach, we usually keep the flight directors on after we switch the autopilot off. Sometimes we even switch off the flight directors. This is called a raw data approach. We also switch off the flight directors if we do not want to follow them or if the approach we fly is not inserted in the MCDU. Here we fly a visual approach. Our detailed final flight path was not programmed in the MCDU, so we had to switch off the flight directors. The main reference during the visual approach is the outside view.

Older planes if you were in FINAL APP when you go -50ft below minimums the plan would go to HDG and V/S mode so you must turn off FD's. Newer ones will keep FINAL APP mode all the way to the Missed Approach Point (often the runway threshold) so you don't necessarily have to turn off as it will still provide guidance but it can still depend where the MAP point is and company SOP's

      The A321 speeds are higher if you compare to the A320 because of the additional airplane weight. Also, the speeds vary due to the passenger and baggage load. When we use the speedbrake, the VLS rises significantly. Even with a heavy A320 you may see something like 240 knots or so.
