You're absolutely right actually. Looking at the success friends was a number of other studios started pitching similar shows and most barely lasted beyond pilot season. Mariska Hargitay played a character very similar to Rachel/Monica and the show aired on CBS I think....but it bombed and got cancelled. Then she switched gears to drama and became the iconic Olivia Benson. And it's been decades with shows like HIMYM and BBT coming and going but none getting the exact formula right like friends did.

I’ve loved Matthew Perry ever since FRIENDS began. I’ve worried about him, really not knowing the more recent details about all of his struggles. I only knew he looked so alarmingly thin in Season 7. (Like he looks in this video) I bought his book when it came out. And even when he’s pouring his heart out about his fears and horrible days he finds a way to put something funny in the scene. I’m so happy he is in a good healthy place. And I’m so grateful he never stopped throwing in something absurd.

OMG MAKES ME SO NOSTALGIC it's like going back in time. I SAW these promos AT THE TIME on my television set. Unless you could afford a video cassette recorder, you were watching the shows Thursday at 9 PM on NBC (channel 4 in los angeles) or you didn't see them (during the summer they did reruns of the show so you could catch up on the ones you missed). So they had to tell you when and where and make you stay tuned in. The way they said "Find out what all the buzz is about" makes me think this is the first season. Because by the second season, WE KNEW what all the buzz was about! And I love how professional they are being, when they were like 24 years old. They are SO funny, but they weren't famous yet.

Watching this after reading Matthew Perry’s memoir creates a whole different experience. Hard to believe he was suffering so much during this time
