To people in the comments saying Living Single: stop with this ridiculous Living Single agenda. First of all, Friends is not a copy of Living Single because the vague idea of the group of friends living in a big city and their dating life, is literally what we, humans, all go through, we all have these experiences, that's life, and to write a show about it is literally the most basic thing ever!
It's like saying that after one person writes a tragic love story first, the other person can't write a tragic romance anymore, because it's a ripoff. Ridiculous! Going with that logic, nothing, no other story would ever get created after the Greek mythology and Bible, because news flash - every archetype, every type of hero or story, actually comes from the Greek mythology and the Bible, that did it first. No one of us lives in a vacuum, so it's normal we write/create similar things, with similar fundaments. But it's just that - basics.
If we look in detail at both shows, Friends is dramatically different from Living Single. First: Friends was way, way funnier than Living Single, and sorry not sorry but the cast of Living Single wasn't as comedy-talented as the Friends cast, it's a fact. I watched Living Single online, on purpose, to see what the fuss was about, and I didn't laugh once. Second: Friends has 3 guys and 3 girls, Living Single had, overall, the main 4 girls, and the main 2 guys, and they were all very different characters, with only a few, vague similarities to Friends characters.
The quality of the writing was also way worse on Living Single, Friends was way wittier and sorry but it's not our fault, or not Friend's creators' fault! Friends was on a bigger network - NBC, but it was created by complete newcomers too, with the cast who were all newbies back then, and their success was based on their extraordinary talents, not because they copied something or because of the marketing.
That's the thing about TV: you can't make people like a show that they don't like, you can't force people to watch smth they don't want to watch. People started to massively watch Friends because it was simply a great show with a very talented cast, Living Single wasn't a success even on their own network among the most important, young adult demographic, and ended quicker because they lacked quality - that's the brutal truth that people who whine that 'Friends is a Living Single ripoff' just can't accept, so they use the 'race card', as always!
Friends is still, the biggest success in the history of this genre - sitcoms, on TV, and not just in the US but globally, and that isn't coincidence. That happened because Friends had quality: the quality of the writing, actors, and comedy was just that good. Also, Friends characters were flawed but were very likable, in Living Single, I liked maybe one character!

I'm a huge fan of all the cast on friends I grew up watching it with my mom and grandma and sisters and now I watch it with my family I have two boys an girl . I'm currently on season 5 an I have my husband watch it too 🙂

I believe it was actually Matthew Perry who had only 11$ to his name???? I fucking loved chandler Bing, he reminded me so much of myself and how obnoxious I am❤.
Nope he comes from money. Actually the only cast member who doesn’t is Matt Leblanc and he was the one who’s as down to the last 11$ in his pocket.
David, Matthew and Courtney comes from really wealthy families. Lisa and Jen also come from quite comfortable backgrounds.

omg enough of this race virtue-signaling nonsense! There were black people on Friends! And they were not just episodic characters, but also those who had bigger roles: Ross' divorce attorney, Joey's dance teacher on Broadway, Charlie, Chandler's female boss (the one who sent him to Tousla), the girl Joey and Ross dated at the same time, the neighbor of Joey&Chandler who sang 'Morning's here' together with Joey, the guy who owned costume shop where Ross bought Holiday Armadillo costume, various friends of Ross&Monica's parents that were invited to their anniversary party, and listened to Ross and Rachel ridiculous fake wedding story, various colleges of the main gang who regularly showed up at their parties - yes, those people at the parties were purely background characters but still, many black people are clearly visible in the background, for example at Rachel's birthday party in season 2. So this gave us the idea that the main 6 had black friends, these black friends just weren't the focus of the show! Because sitcoms have limited time for a limited number of characters anyway, and the focus was the six main white people since Friends creators were all white, they had a right to model the main characters on their own experiences, and that's what they did. Also, this way, your writing is most genuine, it's natural most people choose their own representation and create fictional characters in their own image! What is wrong here? Nothing! And again: it's a lie that there were not black people on Friends. Just like I mentioned: there were black people, and even in bigger roles, they just weren't the focus!
Enough with the “no black people”. Nobody talks about how there was no white people on The Parkers and all those shows. 🙄
