These vintage 1970s commuter trains were later withdrawn and replaced with new Stadler Tramlink light rail vehicles on the 12 km long FLP branch line in southern Switzerland. The scenic meter gauge route runs from Ticino's largest city Lugano to the Italian border at Ponte Tresa, although it stays entirely within Swiss territory and does not cross the frontier. The popular nickname for these trains is the Swiss-German moniker "Mandarinli". It references their mandarin livery and orange appearance, which is typical for the time of design and production.

That front-end Smilie is not original from the 1970s, it was added later, but became quite popular! :)
