Yes, Japanese tend to be conservative in many aspects, but not so much technology-wise. In the McLaren-Honda days, the engine concept was very ambitious from the start, with the 'size-zero' concept and all that. None of it obviously came into fruition and they followed a more conservative approach from 2018 onwards when they started giving power units to RedBull.
I'd bet that at the start of the new 2026 regulations all engines will be disastrous, especially when compared to the current ones. Either Mercedes, RedBull/Ford or Honda will manage to create an engine less awful than the others - I don't think Ferrari is capable of getting the engine 'right' from the start, and in no way I can imagine Renault doing a decent unit to begin with - and will become the next dominant force for a couple of years, whilst the others will play catch up.

Alonso used to drive for McLaren who partnered with Honda for engines, McLaren refused to adjust their chassis though and because of that the Honda engine performed sub-par. One race Alonso got frustrated and called it a GP2 engine, which are less powerful than F1 engines.
Now he drives for Aston Martin and they have announced they will partner with Honda for engines, they currently make engines for the Red Bull team.
The dude that asked the question has a bias against Alonso and asked it to create friction between him and the engineers, referencing his previous comments on Honda engines.

I believe Honda have shown HIGH performance capabilities a few times. Assurances? There can be none in life. All you can do is try very hard and hope everything goes well. Look at F1 today - Red Bull (especially in Max's hands, of course - it's not just a simple car thing) dominate. By the end of THIS season, they can INCREASE their performance advantage even further or DROP to midfield performance levels (despite the fact that there is no obvious way how such a drastic change could take place). F1 is hugely unpredictable. And with component quantity limits getting tougher and tougher, basically anything can happen to any team or driver.

Honda has a great power unit, but they are still doing well because Horner sandbagged the PU and fooled the rest of the grid into signing an engine freeze. We will see what happens when the freeze is lifted in 2026.
