The Bunyip - A Murray Bridge Icon ( Bert the Bunyip)

- European settlers of the 1800s were told about this creature by Aboriginies.
The bunyip was said to live in creeks, riverbeds, waterholes and swamps, emerging at night to terrify and devour any animal or human prey in the vicinity. Its terrifying cries were said to ring out, disturbing the stillness of the night. Lonel and isolated white settlers heard these unfamiliar sounds, wondering and worrying about the existence of an animal monster, native only to Australia.
Aboriginies seemed genuinely afraid of the creature and would not go near any area of water where they thought a bunyip might be lurking. Settlers were anxious to prove or disprove its physical existence. Various believed the sightings of bunyips and were reported in the press with the findings of fossil bones being scientifically examined.
It was not until the turn of the century that the physical existence of the bunyip was disproved.
Some Local Bunyip Facts
The Murray Bridge Bunyip was built by Dennis Newell and launched in 1972.
For 20 cents the bunyip emerged from below the water a gave a very loud roar - twice. This roar could be heard up to one kilometre away. The ugly looking monster did frighten many small children.
His name was Bert the Bunyip.
The Bunyip was given a baby about 10 years after the launch... Bert then became Bertha.
The sound box has had many problems during its time... at one stage vandals somehow worked out how to jam it so it would continue to roar - often through all hours of the night.
Then the Bunyip and baby were also vandalised and part was broken off.
A quieter, more friendly looking bunyip was built and his cave was revamped in 2000.
The price rose to $1 for three appearances.
The bunyip recieves in excess of 20,000 visitors per year.
The Murray Bridge Bunyip can be found lurking in his cave today on the banks of the Murray River at Sturt Reserve Murray Bridge.

After the audio switches off, it suddenly starts to creak. It then starts moving it’s arms. It reaches at you in a vain attempt to grab you. But then the cage lowers it into the water. The bunnyip freezes, and is very slowly pulled down into the abyss. It goes all the way down until it is no longer visible. All you see it murky water.

For people who don’t know, the Bunyip figure is actually about the size of a large van. The door in the background is a good reference for size. A lot of the videos and pictures of this attraction make the Bunyip look smaller than it actually is. Knowing it’s much bigger than it appears makes it much more scarier.

I’ve never been here and never heard of it in my life but like...I wish I got to go here when the water was dirty. I’m fascinated by animatronics in water, especially when they aren’t in the best shape.
While looking at it, I find it odd that it went all the way out of the water like that, especially since it doesn’t seem to do that in other videos, as well as the fact that it should have gone back down sooner than it did. I also find it interesting how it didn’t seem to go back down in the proper way at the end. It looks more like it was falling rather than being pushed back under. Hmm.

This is going to sound so random and I'm posting this on a lot of videos bc i need to know! The original bunyip, what did it sound like?? Was it the same recording as this? I keep seeing it apparently sounded much much louder than this one? Was it a different recording or is this the same/simmilar? Can someone please describe it? xD

The fact that it still works is what really makes this thing scary.
Except that was when it was dirty. Later times, the animatronic malfunction and leaked oil... Dying the ‘animatronic’ completely black. (That’s kind of funny, as that’s a realistic problem. Water oil spills...) Cast members saw this and then cleaned Burt the Bunyip, so he wasn’t black. He is still functional and running today.

At one point the oil in the bunyip's mechanics leaked into the water. Dying the entire thing black for a while before he was cleaned

PurpleAki Well, for me at least, I just find it haunting seeing old, broken-down animatronics in the water. I imagine them moving around down there, watching and waiting for something to get close enough for the thing to pull it down and drown it.
It also makes my skin crawl thinking about being in the water with one of those. Like what if you were in some deep, murky water at an abandoned theme park and the only thing you see is a massive, dilapidated robot with lifeless eyes, surrounded by the rotting corpses of the people it decided to pull down.

This was actually at a time when Bert was slightly broken, because the cage would be lifted up too high so that you could see it. In the actual attraction, no acage should be seen under the bunyip, and it's lower half should still be submerged.

anyone that remembers the 2017 oil leak knows that it took Creature from the Black Lagoon to the literal level
Edit: The only thing that I think is truly animatronic is the movement up and down of Bert since the arms and jaw appear to be nonmechanical parts, meaning buoyancy makes the arms and jaw retract once it goes deep enough underwater.
