Twilight is an inspiring time of day because of the extremes - the light is low and dramatic and the color the light imposes on trees and buildings also can be dramatic - or subtle . In fact some of the subtle relationships that are seen at twilight are the most interesting. The big problem is that the moments are so short and while they leave us in awe - they are very hard to capture. I try to schedule my daily walk to coincide with twilight for this reason. I make observations and notes , sometimes sketches and this week take these back to the studio to build a painting that depicts a specific time of day. . Center of interest Todays image motif is the Commonwealth Avenue Mall - it is part of the “Emerald Necklace” though conceived and designed by Author Gillman. Along this beautiful inner city park are statues of focal heroes and heroines. The statue of Domingo F. Sarmiento towers over the pedestrians passing through a sunlit area. This serves as our center of interest though the light weaving through the branches and trees is the essence of the picture.
Some keys in creating this painting are
1 - Starting with a strong mid tome and expressively place the trees
2 - Isolating the important whites or light areas
3 - creating brushwork to represent the quality of branches and shadows

In my humble opinion this is one of the best, has everything - the thinking behind the composition, value painting, play of light, dry painting, colour etc etc etc

As always, absolutely stunning work. Gary, thank you so much for your amazing videos, I have learned so much from them. Now I need to try some of your techniques in my own work. Gary, do you ever visit Scotland for workshop holidays? Thank you.

@@GaryTuckerArtist I will keep my fingers crossed, just let me know if you do. Scotland is a land of rugged beauty, ancient castles, and poetic whispers carried by Highland winds. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✨
And if Scotland could introduce itself, it might say, “Dinnae fash yersel’, laddie! Come explore!” (Translation: “Don’t worry, my friend! Come explore!”) 😊
