    Description
This video is a demonstration on improvisation and brush work with watercolor Watercolor artist Gary Tucker takes a complex image of a small grouping of trees light and shadow and reveals in real time how the images grows out of an initial wash on the paper to a complex and inspired arrangement of brush marks that form a finished painting
    Knobska Light
    Light
I am asked many times why I am working outdoors in there plein air so often - its much easier in the studio...my answer is simply the light. Inside the studio we can work with much more ease and fewer distractions but we can never feel the same light. For some it is not worth it - for others it is worth everything.
We take back to the studio that momentary experience with light and eventually it finds its way into our work.
    Changing light -
The sun is always moving and so the quality of the light is always changing. Being out in nature we have time and opportunity to come to know these changes. Each season produces a different light each stage of the day a different light - different weather, different light. The artist trains their eye and their memory to understand the quality of these moments so that they can be expressed more profoundly in their artwork.
    Luminosity
Luminosity is light that comes from within - Light exists everywhere - even in the shadows... or in the case of our painting is created by the media itself and its transparent nature.when we place a blue over an orange we in essence create a gray but it is a luminous and lively gray because of the relation ship of these two colors. We use luminosity in our painting in many ways - to create a glowing color to create depth in water or in the sky - to create light in shadows...A simple graded wash is one of the best ways to create luminosity.
    Direction
The light is driven by the angle of the sun and thus the shadows respond to this in direction and intensity. It is one of the first observations I record and use as a foundation for the painting

Begining with a warm yellow ochre to the sky cutting around the shape of the light house
    Shadows
One of the keys to painting light with a convincing character is to portray the shadows .The intensity of a bright day, of the long raking shadows of late afternoon in October. The quality of shadows is indispensable to the quality of light - they go hand in hand and the artist thinks of them as a couple working together to create that special moment.

Beautiful sky in this one Gary, thank you. It's true what you said about doing the sky as quickly as possible. Many alterations I’ve made have spoiled the painting. It’s nice to see how you vary your subject matter.

Thanks Barbara I’m glad you picked up on the sky comments. They remain one of the trickiest parts of our paintings.
      Thanks for the support.
