When working with watercolor one of the constant challenges is achieving rich darks - this is made more complex in painting a nocturne that relies an a strong dark mid tone. These are so necessary to create the luminosity in the painting, to create the sheen on the sidewalk and the glare of the light coming from within. Signage, and figures are also challenging subjects to include in any painting so there are a lot of potential stumbling points. Like anything else however we learn through immersion so let's get to it!
    Watercolor plan
After completing the drawing which has become much faster now thanks to the drill with edges - I am thinking about the sequence for my painting - that means I am contemplating how to best use edges. I decide on soft edges in the foreground and background and hard edges in the interior - with some rough edges in the window frame.. These decision will shape my technique and determine the sequence. After placing the drawing I will start with a warm underpainting - when this is dry I will paint the figures and light in - my main subject - in the interior, After, I will define the larger window with dry technique. Then I will continue to the background - evoking some small lights and gradations in the distance. Last will be the wet into wet foreground - simply dividing the staging has given me an opportunity to think through the painting - an important few minutes as it helps avoid some of the stress while painting!!!
    Nocturne
A nocturne is a painting in which the artist portrays the twilight or evening light. These paintings can be very evocative -you have only to see Whislters nocturnes, to realize this genre is unique and moving in subtle ways. Our scene tonight is much more dramatic and this is another potential of the nocturne - to bring a drama and intensity to the watercolor
In today's drill exercise I chose to focus on edges but we could have easily focused on tonal relationships or color. My subject for the demo was observed last February after an evening rain had passed by - I was not looking for a subject - I was simply out for a walk - but the the scene opened up in front of me and I realized the combination of light and dark - of the lively inviting nature of the cafe could be a worthy motif so I snapped a few photos and started to develop a painting shortly afterwards.

I hold my paper under a tap front and back and then stick it to a board with brown butterfly tape all around the paper, which I also wet with the tap. It buckles initially but then lays flat after a few hours and then ready to paint on. Loving watching this while listening to you. Lovely effect of light with the darks placed around.

The opaque Holbein you used for the letters on the cafe, was this gouche or watercolor? Also what is the color? This was a fun one to watch Gary
