- Cultivate Your Own Artistic Voice in 5 steps
Many artists, drawn to acrylic painting or abstract art, struggle to find their own unique style. They spend hours searching for inspiration online, feeling overwhelmed by the vast array of artistic approaches. But what if the answer isn't out there, but within you?
This is the message The Old Guy (artist Henrik Skorá) delivers in this encouraging video.
Instead of desperately hunting for a style, you should focus on cultivating the artistic style you already possess. It's a personal journey, and this video offers a 5-step approach to guide you:
1. Paint as much as possible. Consistent practice is the cornerstone of artistic development. Think of it as an artistic marathon, not a sprint. Don't overthink every stroke. Trust your gut and paint freely. This initial effort becomes stepping stones in your artistic evolution, helping you discover your natural preferences for subjects, colors, and techniques. Acrylic painting, with its vibrant colors and fast-drying nature, is a great medium to experiment with.
2. Master the Craft: This involves learning the fundamentals of composition, which helps arrange elements in a visually pleasing way. Understanding color theory, how colors interact and mix, unlocks a vast palette of possibilities. Additionally, exploring various painting techniques, like those used in abstract art, expands your artistic toolkit.
3. Develop your process: Every artist develops a personal approach to their work, a painting process that hugely influences their style. Some say that your process is your style. Experiment until you find a workflow that feels natural for you. Basically you must develop a plan on how to approach the painting process in practice.
4. Seek Inspiration: You can do this in many ways.
(I made a video on this: • 4 ways to get ideas fo... )
Study the work of other artists, both within acrylic painting and other styles. Let their work inspire you, but avoid simply copying it. Instead, identify elements you admire and incorporate them into your own work, creating a unique blend of influences.
5. Courage: Mistakes are inevitable, and they are valuable learning experiences. Don't get discouraged by a misstep - view it as an opportunity to refine your skills. As you gain experience, these mistakes will become less frequent.

I’m 67 and I just started painting this year. Your 5 steps are very encouraging as I try to discover my personal style.
I'm glad to hear that. I wish you luck with the project. Remember that you already have a style, so you are not starting from scratch.
Dear dearest Old guy I would like to hug you tight! Your words really made me so happy! I'm self-taught and my teachers are the artists like you on CZcams. I try to learn the techniques. Yes. Even better is: Renoir never did it ... but I did .. Ha, ha ...
I don't know if it will be my style, but your paintings are the best on the internet in my opinion. Thanks for the words of wisdom.
Thank you for your opinion and your very kind comment.
Not only do I find your advice and thoughts interesting but I share your vids with non painting friends in other creative pursuits. Thank you for taking the time to make these, time that you could easily spend on something, someone else but instead you’re investing your time in all of us!
Thank you very much for your very kind comment. It's exciting for me to make these videos, and I really enjoy it. I am a little flattered to hear that you also apply my thoughts in forums other than the purely artistic. Interesting.
Greetings from Denmark
@@skora-theoldguyI would agree with this sentiment. The view of a child for instance upon their own art, proves that your advice is solid.
Brilliant tips and advice for the journey of finding your Style. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us 🎨✏🌈😊
Nice to hear that my video has meant something good for you and your process.
I love your videos. Thank you for what you said about painting flowers. I stopped painting them too for the same reasons as you. I miss them. They bring me joy when I paint them. I think I will do a whole series of flower paintings now! 😊
Yes ... go for it ... flower power is back!
Can I see them, when you have finished them?
@@skora-theoldguy Thank you for the encouragement. Yes, I'd love to show them to you. How would I do that?
Van Goghs Iris and Sunflower works are incredible and some of the most moving works I’ve ever seen 😊
I look forward to your videos, and am always inspired. Thanks so much!

Thank you.
Thank you my dearest Old Guy. Your tutorial as always is very inspiring. I truly treasure your advice. I hope you keep coming to my screen bringing all the knowledge and guidance to me as an emerging artist who is still finding my style. I often have that kind of question when I was inspired by another artist’s work ‘inspired by or copying?’ Your video helped me rethink my approach 🙏💖🌻
Hi. Thank you, you are welcome. Regarding copying, I try to go for what is fun, and it is not fun for me to paint exactly like some one else. Take the inspirational part an make it your own ... that can be fun.
God luck!
Your art is outstanding! Thank you for setting the artist up for success. I do find letting go, taking risks, ring patient and listening to your insights help to take the next step.
Thank you for your kind comment. Working to get better all the time is the key to a happy painting life. Good luck to you.

I love all your work. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
You are welcome.
Thank you for sharing your journey. Your paintings are gorgeous! Your granddaughter resembles you. 🙂
Hi and thank you. Greetings from Denmark to you and your granddaughter.
Thank you, one for the sharing of your journey, two for the thoughtfulness of your reflection, and three for the vulnerability of your process. As I move from full time semantic worker to artist, I have been struggling with converting from feeling masterful to vulnerable. I can classify with the best of them, but is that line too thick, too orange… grrr. Thank you for the encouragement (even though you don’t know me) and the wack on the side of the head. You changed my perspective, now it is up to me to see what I can do with that!
Thank you very much for your very kind comment. I wish you the best of luck with your process in the future. Although the process can sometimes be frustrating, it is the immediate joy of painting that rules it all.
I am very careful that this does not change.
Kind regards Henrik
I love your floral and tree painting style!
Hi. Thank you for watching and your kind comment.
Impressive style looks unique to me

They really help me to trust my inner call... to be me❤
Yes be you ... always. Improve, develop, change stuff but you are the only one who can truly be you!
I love your style so much!
Thank you for your kind comment.
Thank you so much for the encouragement. It's a very difficult path filled with self doubt. But yes courage always pushes me to keep trying.
Hi
You are welcome. If it was easy, maybe it wouldn't be so fun to do it. The challenge itself is good for the process.
You can always choose to paint it over and start over. Only you yourself need to see it.
Helpful and encouraging. Thanks.
Thank you. You are too kind.
Love your style, it is so very appealing.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate your support.
So much wisdom - thank you!

They use the painting process to live out their thoughts and fantasies. ..love that .
Thank you. I try to do the same.
Thanks so much for your encouraging words! Will do start finding my own style without worrying too much of "if i ever find one!" 🙏🌹💞 Btw i love your style! But will find my own though! Bless you! 🤩👍
Yes, go for developing your own style ... but get inspiration for others again and again.
Thankyou 🥰 just what I needed to hear ❤️

It is my pleasure. Thank you for your kind comment.
Thank you so much for this timely advice. As a new painter, I have not yet figured out my style. I love very geometric designs with bold colors, but I also love softer, more organic designs so I have tried both. It's a mood thing, I think. I enjoy switching it up and experimenting. Keep the videos coming!❤
Go on with your experimenting ... and develop your style. Thank you for watching.
The Eagle Flies took my breath away. I love your style, I enjoy your frank and fun message. Ciao!

Thank you for your kind comment. Thjank you for watching.
Loved this video! I´m a very frustrated painter right now so this was so helpful! Looking forward to seeing the next video!
Hi. Frustration is good fuel for changing and the process of getting better. Patience, time and a lot of hard work will make the difference. Good luck.
Wonderful advice - thank you! I mentioned Van Goghs flower paintings in another comment but also coming to mind are the incredible works of Georgia O’Keeffe Claude Monet and Matisse and the sculptures of Kusuma - so many wonderful ways to depict flowers
Hi. You are so right.
I think that Monet's success, in the long run, has made it a little bit harder for us to paint flowers. They became almost too popular (?)
I believe for a fact that every point discussed here is absolutely correct.
Thank you for this kind comment.
@skora-theoldguy .....and I'm not just saying. These are all points I have applied in the past and present.
Thank you for validating that I am on the correct path.
Thank you. I really enjoyed hearing about your art journey and the tips you shared. I am a beginner and currently intimidated, and you have inspired me to relax and have fun.
Hi
Yes ... fun is the main thing and best fuel.
Thank you for your video your work is beautiful and interesting…everything you say is true my biggest hurdle is probably the last one courage… having had a very strict father who always wanted me to be perfect in school and music. I developed a fear of not ever being good enough. Even when other people say that is not true.
Somehow it has stifled me… I’ve started doing mixed media as a way to loosen up and I’m now enjoying it and not worried about making mistakes as I’m trying to see each process as a way to play..🙏💕
Hi.
I believe that we are all created by the circumstances we grew up in and our past. But we can change things ... develop our personality
I often think that there can be no one who knows better what goes on inside my head, than myself. And this is what you paint: What goes on inside than head.
If someone who doesn't like it, it's OK ... at least it's honest. They have to find something they like ... somewhere else. So you must go on painting and create. Good luck.
I love your painting style!
Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I have experienced everything you’ve discussed. I taught myself to paint two summers ago. It’s been quite a journey. I’m glad to know that I am not alone.
Hi Elizabeth
You are definitely not alone. We are millions working to improve our artistic process ... painting or whatever it is, we do.
Good luck to you.

Thank you Sir, for another very useful video! I really want to develop in the direction of abstract painting and I consider this the highest degree of skill for artists. So far I’m not very good at getting into it and mastering it. Today I have received with pleasure from your experience the relevant knowledge and motivation to continue to pursue my goal.
