  • The Shuttleworth Collection's Schneider SG38 (EON Primary) Glider, flying at Old Warden during the Shuttleworth Flying Festival of Britain Airshow 2021. The towing aircraft is Piper PA18 Super Cub, G-OOMF.
The Elliots of Newbury Primary EoN or EoN Type 7 S.G.38 Primary was a training glider developed in the UK shortly after World War II. It is an absolutely minimalist aircraft, consisting of a high, cable-braced wing connected to a conventional empennage by an open-truss framework, and is a copy of the German Schneider SG 38 Schulgleiter (School Glider). Marketed to aero clubs, the Primary EoN was also adopted in 1948 by the Air Training Corps and by the Combined Cadet Force under the name Eton TX.1.

You would have to be a brave soul to fly that! With such a massive wing you would think it could stay up for ever, I wondered how the tail section stayed in place until I saw the wire bracing, a very interesting glider, the pilot is really in an exposed position, many thanks for posting this one Steve! It's like strapping a wooden chair to a cricket bat and adding wings. To think that cadets would be told to sit on one and let loose for their first flight and solo is very humbling. It wouldn't happen today? Steve.

@@HighFlight I know it is no different in a "modern" glider, you only have a glass fibre skin around you, but sitting on the piece of 4x2 at that height must test your nerve to the extreme, and they sent students up in this! I would put most off flying for life.

    nice :)
I thinke the young Hardy Krüger flew a glider of a similar kind.
