Ram started the small 1500 diesel; everyone said no one would buy it...now Ford and GM are in the game! Ram seems to be the winner when it comes to trucks anymore. I'd like to have this truck big time. Would love to tow a travel trailer on the weekends with that small diesel and then during the week get 30 MPG's going to work.
Great video showing the initial information. I appreciate your interviewing the Chief Diesel Engineer for Ram to get hands on information about the redesigned 3rd Gen. Ecodiesel. Keep up the good work, Andre.
Can't believe you guys were in gilbert!! Saw everything getting setup when I was at the park on Sunday. Wish I could've stayed up and met you guys. Hope they have more demos there in the future
I like the look of this EcoRebel.
53k trouble free miles from my ecodiesel so far. It might explode tomorrow though, who knows. I get 25-27 mpg, and have towed 6k @14.5 mpg on several occasions. The possibility of 1,100 miles per tank in the new truck is getting my wallet nervous.
Update: I had the AEM performed today. The engine was already warm, so I didn't experience any additional turbo lag/sluggish throttle response. I did have better transmission response, (seeking the highest gear without lagging) and fuel economy on the 70ish mile drive home from the dealership.
I told the guy who sold me my ecodiesel thesame thing...my wife bought a new jeep and he asked if i was ready for another truck yet...told him the 2020 ecodiesel has my eye haha
My 2017 F150 has a 36 gallon tank. It gets pretty spendy to fill up.
My first gen Raptor has a 36gal, and it gets about 13mpg talk about spendy. Haha
I have a 17 Eco on 37s and get better mileage on the streets than most Hemis on the freeway. Love my baby diesel
@@TheHitSquadOffroad I have a 5.0I V8. I get 19.9 on the highway. It's not terrible but it's not great.
Outstanding video! Great details!
I will say the Tradesman package is probably the best bang for your buck. No other brand can offer a 4 door/quad cab big engine 4wd max tow for what Ram can.
Leland Holton how much does it run?
That towing mirror trick was the coolest thing I’ve seen
The show is great. If you guys ever decide to do a TFL Motorcycle, I would be more than happy to test bikes for you.
Pretty amazing the capability of these half ton trucks with the small displacement diesel. My 96 Ram 2500 with the 8.0 V10 is rated for roughly the same towing and payload capacity

@@crazyhass84 exactly, even the difference from 4 speed to 6 made v6 half tons so much better
Still though, got that sweet V10
I think you found your new truck Andre. The new Ram Rebel eco- diesel. Thanks for sharing the details of the this truck Andre.

That's cool that the ram box lights let you see in the dark...😎

how good is the front brake actuated traction control for splitting power left to right? I asked a ram sales guy a few years back and they said it did not have off road TC.
Oooh! It looks like someone was at the Iron Range Off Highway Vehicle Park in Gilbert, Minnesota. :-)
Please update with the MPG ratings when they drop and also availability. Thx!
You guys should do a video on just the changes for the 3rd Gen EcoDiesel. Question: How does the new engine cool the EGRs?
Coolant
Here is my experience. I have the Hemi in a 2015 1500, I LOVE it. Drives great. Wonderful power. Very smooth ride. Great interior. But I learned the hard way that they all break exhaust manifold studs. I ended having to replace all the studs and install new headers due to this endemic failure. It happened at 60K miles. I talked with RAM "Oh sure, they all do that" "Its because of the aluminum heads and iron block" Huh? Then I learned that the coolant bypass valve failed. "Oh sure, we do those all the time". Now its don't let it idle or you will see the roller cam followers fail. "Sure, been doing it for years". My daddy told me never buy a year one car. All the problems will surface and get fixed for the next model. Maybe this new diesel engine is fixing the problems. But maybe its bringing on a bunch of new problems. I will hang onto my 2015 Hemi truck. I mean, I just paid to get most of the "common" problems fixed!
Same problem here in addition to the AC compressor relay sticking and the oil pressure sensor; thought it was a teething problem in 2014 models. Not so, dealer told me the same with an Italian swag. Love the mpg but will be back to Cummins next time around.
Does the larger fuel tank affect the payload capacity? I imagine it would, right? So is the 1200 lb with the larger or smaller fuel tank?
Cool that RAM is putting more engine choices for the consumer. I have no need for a 1/2 ton diesel, much less a 1/2 ton. Still cool regardless.
8:23 - I'm so glad you called them "HVAC controls." A real tradesman!
The barn door tailgate is way more interesting than the diesel IMO. Just like the passthrough storage and seat on the Rivian is the coolest thing on that truck. If manufactures want to separate themselves from the pack they need to look at functional design changes like these. My Dad for instance loves to buy RAm trucks because of its storage options like the RAM box and in floor storage. People poo poo it because it takes away from the bed space but my Dad uses it for camping, fishing and as a daily driver. And these things are awesome for that. My mom loves to use them too for shopping and her hobby supplies so much that she won't let my Dad get a truck without them.
Personally I have a friend who has a Ridgeline with the in bed storage box. I like that option so much! It's great for storing all kind of things you don't want to get wet or store in the passenger cabin. If I was comfortable sitting in one and it had the towing and offroading cap I wanted I would think about getting it.
When it comes to storage and access Trucks need the equivalent of van stow and go seating IMO. The company that comes up with that is going to sell a shit ton of trucks. I really think it's the thing allot of people don't realize they really want. Because let's face it. Using a Tonneau cover to keep things dry is a pain in the ass. Stuff gets shifted to the front of the box and truck boxes are so tall nowadays that they are impractical for a lot of people unless you are doing construction. I use mine for camping and a wheelchair and I honestly miss the box in my old 2001 F150 cause it was accessible without the need for hooky steps. I'm 6'6" and even I have a difficult time getting things out of my 2014 Sierra's box sometimes.
It's too bad that a lot of people don't see the Ridgeline as a viable option in a truck because of its limitations. I bet for a lot of people its all they really need cause the worst road they are going to take it on is a grid road. Its only issue is that its not very "off road worthy" so a lot of people don't look at it even though they don't off road their trucks.
I saw an axle lock button near the transmission dial, but you didn't talk about it. Is there a selectable rear locker on the new 2020 Ram Rebel 1500 Eco Diesel?
2 egr's, 2x more likely to break,or 2x more annoying to delete? Also kind of hard to understand what the engineer is saying sometimes,
Some subtitles would be nice.
Damn Italians.
James panda Let me try: “Ats-a Lott-a exhaust-a ...And now-a we gotta more-a reliability-a”
Sorry, I just don't think diesel engines in half ton trucks make any sense. But I do like the tailgate design. Not so fond of those latches mounted on the bed however. I can see items getting hung up on them when getting dragged out.
It's all about mpg, GM's can make up to , I think, 33 mpg hwy, plus almost same towing capacity ,that's neat, at least for me
@@desvariosdeuncamionero8856 But the added cost of the engine, fuel and maintenance make that offset in better mpg a moot point for a long time.
Some gas engines are getting more than 20 mpg and are getting better all the time.
Ecodiesel engines don't exactly inspire confidence in durability either. Yes, the Italian engineer with the cool accent said otherwise, but what do you think he is supposed to say?
Granted, I'm a Ford F150 kinda guy, but would not consider a Powerstroke in a half ton anytime soon.
@@billymc2681 People on the Ram forums have been asking for a baby diesel for a long time. Now, whether or not they buy it is the question.
billy mc damn just cause he’s Italian you don’t trust him? Racist much?
@@alecbaye9703 way to jump to ignorant conclusions. It's the head engineer, he's not gonna bring negative info about his new engine in an interview, regardless of him being Italian, or German, or russian, etc. Stop reaching for the offended butthurt schtick.
It’s funny to see that RAM chief engineer is Italian.
Fiat owns them, so makes perfect sense 👍
And the eco diesel was developed/sold in Europe before coming to the states.
No he is from VM and was Chief Engineer on the Eco Diesel for Ram
so what? why does it matter? you must be American
He's not the Ram Chief Engineer..... just chief engineer of the Eco diesel!
It was an observation. You are over reacting.
I literally just build this exact same Rebel truck on Rams website 2 days ago except I had the 12in screen and the sunroof. Looks even better on video. Now only if I could afford it lol
My best friend saved his butt off for a new truck. He works construction up north. He bought one...told him to be careful! Nothing but problems with this engine. Always in the dealership. Fact he's in there often enough , they won't give him a loaner anymore. Damn good looking trucks...but pass!!!!
But talked to a guy a couple if weeks ago at the pump and said he's had no problems whatsoever
Here's another thing! I'm shopping for a new diesel at the moment... 🙄
Every brand has their problems. talking to 2 different people is not a true indication of vehicle issues. If that were the case, no companies would be able to sell anything...after turning wrenches for 10 years, I'd never own a GM product, but still would buy a RAM even with the few issues I did have. My current Ford PS is not perfect either. It's been in the shop 5 times since March 2018 when I bought it new. sooo, Buy what will work for you and use the hell out of the warranty. Only way companies learn to make their shit better.
@@zeex-14rse57 true words!! I test drove the ram diesel the other day. Damn...its beautiful inside and out! Plenty of power! But I can hear my dad telling me not to do it! Lol.
So I have the Chevy 1500 , Ford EcoBoost 6 , and the little diesel Colorado to drive today. Take care
Next is upgrades for whatever I get!! Tuners e.g
With the price of diesel fuel, the required use of def fluid, and the probability of a premium price for the engine, 1/2 ton diesels just don't really make much sense.
Agreed on all parts. Not to mention with all that added EPA BS has made diesels way more complex and more unreliable. I would have rather seen them abandon the diesel idea and come out with a twin turbo gas motor like the F150.
@@sukemecuke That's an interesting idea, imagine a turbocharged hemi, that's more interesting than a diesel and probably a lot cheaper to develop.
Diesel in Iowa has been 10 cents or less than regular gas in Iowa for a few years, combine that with def and higher maintenance and you about even out
@@brandonmyers2428 yeah if you can afford a 60k truck putting in premium fuel shouldn't be of much concern.
@@brandonmyers2428 The biggest thing on the ecodiesel is its had a butt load of issues. Even with some motors blowing with less than 20k on them. So it isn't so much the maintenance but the EPA crap has made those motors ticking time bombs.
I have my doubts about this engine BUT.....I like the fact the offer the bigger 36gal tank. Only time will tell on the reliability of this engine.
simjet22 33gal
Once it hits the dealer lots I’m sure we’ll find out fairly fast whether it is reliable or not like the last one
As far as I know, they’re fiat diesels so who knows if it’ll last more than 30k miles🤷🏻♂️
Had a 2016, never again. Still a VM sourced engine. Show me a 10yr/100k unlimited bumper to bumper warranty, and we'll see
Jeffrey Hornbaker I heard those engines were a nightmare.
Pitty you had problems 120k on my 2015 and still love it
@Jeffrey Hornbaker
We are at 87k miles on our 2016 and zero issues even after the emission update, she runs like a champ and gets an average of 25 MPG. My son also has a 2014 Eco with 104K miles and zero issues (2nd owner since 44K) We will be buying another just like 10's of thousands of others will be so I'm sure they will not need to chase your couple of dollars down.
rsg1963 I find it hard to believe you haven’t had any issues.
Did they get the ERG problem fixed and what about valve seats failing early.

@@scarhart53 TFL own a 5.7 hemi v8 "gas" rebel as a long term vehicle.
I REALLY HOPE YOULL DO A REVIEW ON THE BRONCO WHEN IT COMES OUT
I’ve been waiting to see what this truck was going to bring to the table since I’m in the market for a 1/2 ton diesel. Looks like the Ram is going to be very competitive. With the 3rd generation engine having 80% new parts it won’t make a difference who you go with you will be taking a crapshoot since there really isn’t any track record for any of the 1/2 ton Diesel engines.
I wish Ram would have redesigned the Ram Box so it was a side opener. You can’t have a set of racks or a shell and use them. Oh well, it was just going to cost a bunch more $$ if I got it. GMC still wins in the tail gate department with that 6 way tail gate.
Except the tailgate doesn't work with any type of tow hitch.. woops.
Spencer Bane I hadn’t heard about that. Are you saying that the truck can’t accept a receiver hitch or that you can’t attach a ball to the bumper? I’m assuming you are referring to the GMC.
@@secondamendment8773 czcams.com/video/WbB2lj_2-CI/video.html
Spencer Bane That’s funny. I did a search and didn’t find anything about it. Thanks for the link. That sure makes that a lot less useful.
I been drooling over the power wagon. But this kind of caught my eye
Same
I recommend buying a salvaged power wagon and putting a cummins in it. these eco diesels are based around european qualitu diesel fuel, north american diesel fuels are hard on these motors and cause massive failures.
I still got a 3/4-ton Power Wagon, I don't really care about the diesel.
New tailgate options are interesting. So are the towing mirror/road mirror combination. I like the integrated lock box in the fender. Been thinking that space would have been good for that for decades. NEW trucks have sure become very complex. Wish I had a need and the $ for one. :P
When will the regular cab 8’ bed 1500 be available?!
It doesn't even sound bad at all
Sounds good
Ram: 2020’s winner of most recalls award.
meramosjr nawww....GM will beat them again in 2020. Top seven unreliable trucks for 2019 out of the seven they were four GM trucks one Nissan one Toyota and one RAM.
QUESTIONS!!! ok can you confirm 100% that you didnt miss speak. You said the eco can now have the larger 33gal tank as an option? In the past, only the smaller tank was available, with ram saying the def tank took up the extra space of the larger fuel cell. Please confirm if you are right on the larger Tank being a true option on the ecoD.
First thing I noticed is that new tailgate. Haven't seen it action yet.
Jared Kurtti we got em at our dealership. They’re pretty cool
As much as I wanna love the new eco diesel, its so hard to trust FCA diesels.
FCA anything.
I would rather have Chevys straight 6 diesel in the 1500... except gms 2500 is giving them problems with the stupid emissions crap
Because Gen 1 failed regularly at 150k miles or less and check engine lights came on and we're difficult if not impossible to solve are 2 great reasons not to trust these economy diesels.
I dont think tfl knows what water logged means

Everyone: waterlogged = stalled while under water.
TFL: waterlogged: Drive 'er through that puddle boys!
what’s the Tow rating of that Rebel crew cab in this video ????
What’s the towing cap on the eco diesel for the rebel ?
I'm curious to how long these new mini diesels will last.
Where in Minnesota are y'all at?
I hope this engine doesn't carry over the infamous bosh injection pump that will blow up and leave you on the side of the road and with a $6k bill to replace it, the fuel lines and injectors! My mid size Chevy Colorado ZR2 has a higher payload rating than the RAM. Wait, I only see only 4 head bolts per cylinder on that aluminum head! With 18:1 compression, and 20 lbs of turbo boost......can you say head gasket issues down the road especially at max towing??? Be careful when you test this truck on the Ike!
A Colorado with over 2k pounds of payload? Well there is a first for everything.
Go to the 7:07 mark. The ram has 1,200 payload capacity. Same as the Colorado zR2
So how does this truck have ram boxes and the new tail gate when you cant even get it on the website yet
I actually like my '14 Ecodiesel a lot. Except for the CEL every few months and the resultant "software update" that "fixed" each CEL, and the ever declining mpg, and the fact that it got 5 years old and out of warranty. Can we expect better with the new version?
Those laches for the tailgate stick up to high and will be in the way and get smashed. Plus still no step to step up into bed. Also do the tailgates open more then the 90 degrees.
Reliability?
like that tail gate
can they change the 115v sockets for 240v for UK?

Jorge Garcia that's why I said ram should get it now. The Nissan was an odd setup for most and people are use to ram with cummins.
5.0 would not make the mileage numbers,

No exhaust brake.
Not likely. But aftermarket seems to have a solution. I checked and would consider it. I'm surprised with all the towing blathering going on they did not include it. Would be a great selling feature. Make it optional, I'd buy it!
