Video 2 weeks ago. Any updates? My advice to help keep temperature under control and big power improvement on your low compression 440 is to be VERY generous with ignition timing. Try to modify your distributor to give you as much timing at idle as your starter motor is comfortable with while giving you a total advance of 38-40° with the vacuum advance unhooked. The HEI distributor has to be disassembled to access the advance limiter bushing. Short of doing that, (and to much lesser effect) use light advance springs to get full advance in as quick as possible. Also, be sure to use coolant recovery tank to keep system filled to capacity. I didn't see what you were using for a carb.
Awesome tips and advice! The timing is pretty conservative right now. We flushed the system again and installed a new thermostat and radiator cap, we posted a video on that. Unfortunately we discovered the radiator has a hole in the bottom of it this weekend. So time for a few more upgrades. Thanks for watching, and the advice!
When you drive it daily you can just press the gas pedal down 1/4 while turning the ignition and they start liek a modern fuel injected car...After the first start of the day you can just turn the key with no touching the gas pedal,but keep your foot by the pedal if it turns more than 2 seconds without starting press 1/4 down and they fire up... When sitting a week press the pedal down one pump some cars need 2 pumps then 1/4 down and they fire up like a modern fuel injected car,you can slap it in reverse or drive and they drive away without stalling...Even in freezing weather. This is when the carburetor works most people have bad accelerator pumps and they have issues.. Been around Chrysler products since a baby in the 70's...drove them since the 80's and thats how they work,most people dont have them set properly..My 440's even with bigger cam work like this everything from 273's-440's thats 273,318,340,360,383,400,413,426 Wedge and 440's I owned and own start like this after carb rebuild and tune up...
I only have one neighbor nearby, and they leave their dogs out. We live in the woods so there is always some kind of wildlife moving through getting the dogs excited. Sorry if it makes the video distracting.
I have an 84 prospector single cab short bed with 25 thousand original miles and I'm trying to put a 440 in it aswell, was it difficult for you to find that big block

Can you make a few cold starts in your carbed mopars from inside like this so we can see what you do with the gas pedal and whatnot to get them going?
Sure, we just posted a cold start with the 360. It's pretty loud inside because the exhaust ends right under the cab.
