- THE OTHER GUYS-JUNKYARD 440 GETS SUPER POWERS! HOW MUCH IS A CAM WORTH? HOW ABOUT NITROUS OR BOOST FROM A LOW-BUCK, DIY TURBO KIT? CAN THE LOW-COMPRESSION, MOTIVATIONAL SOURCE FOR A MOTORHOME ACHIEVE SUPER SHIELD STATUS? PART 1 COVERS THE MODIFICATIONS AND PREP FOR THE DYNO WITH FULL RESULTS ON THE LOANER, (NEARLY) JUNKYARD 440 MOPAR COMBO. CAM, NITROUS AND HOMEMADE TURBO COMING NEXT.
I like this format better than just the dyno charts.
Brian Middleton I agree. I love seeing more behind the scenes stuff along with all the dyno charts. Richard seems like one cool cat with a ton of engine knowledge.
The dyno chart ones are actually 20 year old Hot Rod magazine articles turned into videos...
I'm NOT a Mopar guy, BUT, it's the outside the box experiments like this, that quench my thirst for knowledge. Thank you!
That's what is so great about these truck/motorhome 440's. They are plentiful and make a ton of torque despite having ridiculously low compression!
Almost positive Freiburger and Dulcich have greasy 440's just laying around everywhere, tripping on them when they walk...getting stuck in their hair etc etc.
Freiburger: I like my mopar 440's, I've got one in my garage
Dulcich: Yeah they're great, I've got one around here somewhere...
[cut to showing one in corner of workshop, another under the stairs, another in the downstairs toilet, another being used as a dining table, one at the foot of the bed, 3 in various cars in his yard, 2 on the rack storage in the shop and another he just bought on ebay this morning for $500 that hasn't been shipped yet]
It's so cool that Richard can show us all this.
I started on Mopars as a kid, and compared to the Gen 3 stuff is far cheaper and easier to work on. Yeah, wedge heads don't flow as well as the late model stuff, but the basics are there and the combos are proven.
I pretty sure Freiburger has a chrome dome ,hat came off ,tv blinked out from sunshine reflection overload.Dulcich 100% hippy but damn the man knows mopar
And he loves the two wheel drive trucks from 1960-1993 short beds.
This one was courtesy of the Dirt Every day guys
I am a Porsche guy but still enjoy your channel, great presentation and unbiased results. Even show your “mistakes” which others should learn from. My tow vehicle will benefit from some of your tweaks, keep up the good work.
I should do an outtakes
I have two motor home 440s and since the motor home only had 35.000 miles on them both are standard bore with virtually no cylinder wear you can still see the cross hatch from being honed one has a cast crank the other forged both have six pak rods they use to be cheap to get but people are getting wise to their potential, I can't wait for the rest of these videos loving it!
Thankyou Richard! The 440 is a great engine. Stoked to see it get a couple of dedicated episodes!
I love all the videos you do and it may seem slow paced for people that only look at number but they are informative for those of us that build our own-thanks
I have a stock long block 440 in my 71 duster that came out of a RV. Every one has told me its nothing but a boat anchor. Good to see some real numbers to prove them wrong.
It's a boat anchor, but pistons and a cam can fix it...
Yes, this format is fantastic! Enjoyed the back story, and the process leading to the dyno run. Always enjoy your perspective on engine dynamics Richard!
YES! BIG BLOCK MOPOWER! CANT WAIT FOR THE OTHER VIDEOS ON IT!!!
I’d laugh my ass off if this engine ends up with a turbo on roadkill garage 😂 I can see Steve’s face now 😂😂
I broke a valve spring on a 4.0 Ford with OHC. They take special valve spring compressors. Had to make a homemade one. Spent a day making it. But it was faster and better than spending the $$$.
Can you do a video on what you did?
Dave and the two Steve's ( Dave's sons 😂) are fantastic, Mike Finnegan also and of course the dude with the best hair Richard. You guys are literally engine tech Encyclopedias . Engine dudes like myself really enjoy you guys and the work that going into these shows and episodes
thnx-those guys are great
I liked seeing how we got from the yard to the dyno in this video. Let’s us know that it’s not just a snap of the fingers, and done. Also I liked how you overcame the valvespring tool issues.
Thank you!!!! Been asking for this for a while. LOVE THE CONTENT. Keep going.
I very much prefer this type of video.....Thank you for keeping me and others like me in mind !
These winnebago 440s came with a low compression ratio like 8 to 1. Definitely boost if you are not increasing it.
Glad to see you're making videos again, much better format
I’ve wanted to see a BBM on boost for a long time, can’t wait! 👍🏻
@DaveCaresForYou
Will do! Thanks! 👍🏻
Absolutely love the videos. Always thirsty more knowledge. Keep them videos coming.
Hell yeah! Thanks for some Mopar love!!!!
we did the valve spring in my 455 pontiac the same way. not as much fun as one might think. that ol'440 is real clean inside.
You know you don't need to take the manifold off to do a cam swap? Take the rocker shafts off and use a magnet to pull the lifters out, swap the cam and slide them back in. You can do that on all Mopars.
Really? Just pull the manifold and make your life easy. Stop dickin around whit shot cuts that just waste more time
I am loving the mopar content! I'd love to see some small block mopar(la/magnum) and more gen 3 hemi stuff as well.
so nice to see a truck like yours without rust. Man do I want to move south haha!
Go for it!
I love my Milwaukee 12v series. Lol. Great video Richard. I hope after you have fun experimenting with this motor you boost it to the moon to see what it will take..
That bottomend is extremely massive on those big block Mopars. I am going to guess it will take whatever the LS can.
Keep on Keeping on Richard!!
The max "reliable" hp estimates on the stock BBM block is about 750hp. That's with main studs and Aluminum Main caps. What kills these blocks is what is known as "Cap Walk". Even though the blocks are very "deep skirted" they are still only a two bolt main design. Of course they can be pushed past 750, but that's where you lose much of the reliability factor.
I’ve been waiting my whole life for this
It’s awesome to see ya using Pittsburgh sockets from good ole horrible fright.
all i can afford
Thanks for posting, Richard.
7.8 to 1 compression??
Cam
A lot of head work
871 blower
There, all fixed.
With a very small pulley 🤘🏻
If you are going to go forced induction, no need to bother with head work.
@@scottmichaels1764 You must have never watched any of these dyno comparisons on this channel.
The rv motor has 8.2 compression
Those NewBalance 365's are getting hard to find.
Best sneaker I've put on my sore old feet.
GM bought them out. They come with every new Corvette purchase.
Hey Richard would love to see a max effort L31 vortec 350 build. Is it possible to make 400 +hp from a stock junkyard L31? Something with a Big hydraulic roller on a tight lsa, spring upgrade, steel shim head gasket, good intake and carb.
Alot of people go right towards the LS swap but what's really being left on the table with that gen 1 small block. Keep up the awesome work 👍🏻
the heads will certainly support that power level, ot sure how much cam we can get in stock P-V
@@richardholdener1727 Only one way to find out right lol, thanks for the response keep up the awesome work, i'll keep my eyes open for that test in the near future hopefully. 👍🏻
How does Dulcich have a better haircut during quarantine than when things are normal?
His wife cuts his hair:D
Richard you lucky man, Lisa has wonderful humor.
Would be interesting if the baseline runs could keep the factory exhaust manifolds in your dyno runs. To get the baseline closer to the std engine. Great work btw!
Awesome been waiting for this test!!
I would be very interested in a test of the Hughes Racing Engines Whiplash cam. It is designed for the later low compression engines to build cylinder pressure.
Awesome, glad you got a older mopar up there. Thanks for all the effort you put in. P.S. also interested in the spring/retainer/clip upgrade (specs/part #’s)
26120-all from comp catalog listed for the cam
Thank You Lisa !!
As viewers Richard- we are YOUR MotorHomies. :-]
i like that
I like dyno charts Richard, also like the hands on. This thing will be a stump puller after you work your magic. Who wouldn't be happy with 550 to 600 lbs of torque no matter what hp you end up with?
Can't wait for the next episode!
I love your videos. Thank you for uploading
It has a ways to go to match that 455 Pontiac!
To be fair the 455 had a decent cam, compression ratio and ported heads. A smog era 455 is in the same ballpark as this 440. My step-father's '74 Grand Prix was not fast.
Videos like this remind me: goddammit I need money.
Like a lot of it.
Came from a pace arrow a 30 foot fat camper. That's where I got mine. 35,000 miles.
Just need to figure out how to put an sm465 behind it
Niceeee i like so much this new video style
Please run the stock exhaust manifolds NA-interested to compare power output. Thank you.
Man u wanna talk about the other guys, let's see some testing with a quadrajet or a thermo-quad! I know the Pontiac had one on there but I'd like to see some back to back testing
Why have I not been following you on CZcams I guess we can think covid-19 but nonetheless glad to find the channel
What's the specs on the upgraded springs Richard ? What brand/part number ? Awesome series... dying to see it on boost. I have one of these Motorhome 440's on standby for a future build.
I was going to ask the same question....
26120 springs from comp
@@richardholdener1727 Excellent, thank you. Are you going hydraulic roller with the cam upgrades ?
Dude! Freiburger loaned it to you!
Do you know how much print of him and CJ I read in the 70's and 80's!
Fast times in 1978, I wiuld speak to Mr.
Peterson from Petersens speed shop in Englewood Colorado. Before he moved out to north of Denver into his new digs at fluid power systems. Since then,
He sold the Biz. I would bug him on the phone with, "Many Questions" concerning my 0.30 oversize 396 Chevy.
Slow mornings and he would help me.
My poor reputation precedes me there.
I moved away in 95.
I am all theory now. No dinero for practical application.
Yep, that motors already been on engine masters i think, or an episode of roadkill garage
this one hasn't-Dulcich has another
Any chance you could do a in depth session just on valve springs and choosing the right ones and setup
Ps was curios on what the thermoquad was capable of!
the TQ would work well as this level
@@richardholdener1727 TQs are good carbs as long as they haven't been backfired.
Too bad you didn't have the Thermo-quad to use. Set up properly, they work great.
i always whack the retainer with a socket to loosen the keepers before i use a compressor. it makes sure they release on the first try.
we do that-works well
@@richardholdener1727 unless that cyl is at TDC. (oopsie!) I usually only do that when taking it apart.
Morning Richard 🤘😁🤘
Now we're moving forward!! ☝️✅👍
The only thing I have questions about is i have heard some mopars from this era have balance weights on the torque converter. If you have to have a flywheel, I am sure you can get one with the correct balance.factor but looking at the damper it looks like an external balance engine.
I so want to see a Big Bang version of this lol.
Thumbs up if you would enjoy Richard doing a live Q&A stream and just talk shop for idk minutes or so ???
live stream would be good-maybe once a week?
@@richardholdener1727 man I give you credit for interacting with your followers 🤘🏻. Maybe a Sunday thing to recap the weeks posts and answer some tech questions. I know i have one that might be a bit lengthy. A few guitar channels I follow do it and seems to be very enjoyable. 🤘🏻
Whoo hoo!!!!!!! Thank you sooooo much!!!!
For some reason when you were doing the valve springs when you stood up I thought you were just going to kick the shit out of the block lol.
I think I lose that fight
Richard Holdener yeahhhh no matter how mad you get and how hard you hit it, they usually win.
11:30 i been building engines all my life, I've never seen one stop spinning completely then spin the opposite direction...
Bad Donkey what 😂😂😂 camera issue? I’m genuinely confused
Shutter speed only can see so fast.... just like helicopter blades stop and spin backwards when they are in the sky on video
Reverse rotation motors do it, and sometimes after shut of they do-check out my IG to see a 4.8L do it excessively
Yeahhhh!!!!!!!!!! there ya go!!!!!!!
Boost wakes everything up. But you know what also wakes up a motor? Boost and compression lol
Changed the springs on my old 400 with the second compressor. Worked fine but its a workout haha
Before you let loose the Crankenstien on the 440. YOU MUST UPGRADE ,MUST UPGRADE THE OIL PUMP AND PICK UP .
327 hp that hurts .
35 comments on a RB MOPAR ,this is upsetting.Must be it doesn’t have the letters LS in the title or cheap Chevy .
Mopar high po parts are really expensive these days.
BIG BLOCKS ASSEMBLE!
Yeah those are decent numbers considering how simple it is and how affordable for the average guy.
Please do more of the video like this
How are you keeping the valve from falling into the chamber? Also, will stiffer springs increase power on a stock cam at higher RPM?
I thought the welding rod trick was a Dulcich original:)
Have one 440 Police Interceptor engine left in my garage. I really have to sell it so I don’t go looking for a Mopar to put it on as I have just to many projects as it is
Hell they LS swap everything. Toss that 440 in something and use it 🤘🏻 keep building
@@Knightmare-gz9ls Yeah but, I sold the '71 RT Challenger I had it in. So it is now out of its element and the LS is such a lighter/smaller base to start from. A friend is trying to keep Mopar loyal and is putting a 3rd Gen Hemi in his Baracuda
Would it be possible to see a test in comp height for quench raising compression no other changes to see how it effects detonation for pump gas and performance. or if you have all ready done this please explain results. Thanks.
we talked about that
Not a Mopar guy but great content Richard, thank you!
I appreciate that!
Personally I blame squirrels
You always do.....
@@BEANS-O-MATICtransmissions Because it is always their fault :)
Ok raise your hand if you don't get this joke and are looking for the inside info 🤘🏻
John Woodworth : Rats. Mice. Mopars. Apliances. Frauds.Inters.Cads.Ponchos.Oldz.Hogs. But always the Squirrels.
Waiting on that nitrous distribution video 🙏🏻
I think that's up
How did the valves not drop when you did the springs? Was gonna mention the thumbnail as well😀
He used compressed air to hold the valves up.
I’m helping a friend basically put together this exact combo.
77 440 going in a 74 2wd d100.
Which cam did you go with?
I was seeing info online that you back retainers into the seats if you exceed 0.480” lift
you need springs and retainers and to cut the guide if the cam is too big
What would be the best manual transmission to swap onto my motorhome 440?
I would also love to know this. Looks like factory 3 speeds or an adapter kit for whatever trans you want.
Get Freiburgers Covid350 on the dyno Rich.
My friend is swapping a motorhome 440 into his 1986 C10. I should send him my cam; 230 @ .050 with .480 lift. I think that would make him happy.
It will need better compression to work well.
bbm in a 86 c10? holy shit.
@@Joshie2256 no. i have a 226/234 @.050 and .494/.513 cam in my stock comp 400. is responsive as hell.
Chrome valve covers, chrome vreather, charome water outlet, chrome bodies nitros solenoid. How could it not make 1000 hp n/a?
So headers intake and carb make a rv low compression 440 equal to a 383. Not bad. I’d like to see what edelbrock heads would do on one of these.
Richard have you done a video on spark plugs. I’d love to hear your input on hp and na vs boost apps.
we just run colder ones with boost-and less gap
Ha! Just watched that episode of Roadkill.
Hell yeah!!!!!!
Richard what's the projected date for SS2 vs. the world?
finished NA testing-doing turbo stuff
@@richardholdener1727 great news! I'm listening to the summit podcast while tearing down a 5.3.
Did I miss the winner to the camshaft?
not yet

ridin' dirty :)
Mustang James : Hes a C million Aire. I get all your jokes and Ima worried for maself....
Yeah, Freiburger doesn’t care if you blow up his 440. He wants to see the results too. He likes the dyno more than Dulcich or Brûlé. He is out of control with himself. I vote for a retest for results with a built in cam shootout and a 100 hp Dulcich port o matic job. I’ve been collecting parts for a 460 build like this but, I’m in Louisiana, so my engines are safe. I even have a belt drive fuel pump for it. Scatter Freiburger’s engine.
Yummy mopar big block I'm out officially not wearing pants
When do you sleep??
Some uploads take hours to load up. Might start at say 9pm and it will finish at 4am.
He doesn't. He just make a sort of whirring sound and shuts down.
The 3v 4.6 is the most Hated motor you won’t even do a test on it to see how much horsepower it can take!!!!!!!!!!!
I have tests on the 3V
I hope u go turbo with the stock geads and since the comp is so low I'd like to see 22 psi make 7to800 hp on a super mild cam
Finally!
🤔 327hp ? I see nothing but FERTILE VIRGIN GROUNDS waiting to be PLOWED. 👌🏻😏👍🏻
