I am actually planning on getting an Opinel in case I ever end up a Hobo, living on the harsh road and traveling the country by hopping trains. I can think of no knife better then an Opinel to open soup cans, not to mention, what says “Hobo who’s seen better times” better then a damned Opinel 😂

Hey, I am French and so know a bit about opinel, this is the knife that my grandfather who was a farmer was carrying as EDC (and as sole knife) and he was using it for pretty much everything from the lunch or dinner to gardening or even any other day to day task. Anyway, I am same as you, not fan of that knife and get more than 200 knives but no opinel at all... But he explains me the reason of the success: back in the time, people where quite poor and had not too much stuffs, they had only essential stuffs. My grandfather had 3 pants: 2 working blue pants for the week and 1 dressed for the Sunday at church. He had the same 3 pants for more than 20 years... Opinel was the only knife back in the time which was 1. Cheap, 2. Available everywhere, 3. Reliable 4. Easy to re sharp, 5. Versatile with its blade shape and 6. Was not piercing the pockets of the pants as was light and because of the round handle shape who cannot pierce. So less maintenance for people in the country who had very few clothes and where keeping valuable things like coins or few cash they may had in the pants pocket only. That last point was always mentioned by my grandfather and people around and with low price, was one of the major success reason. It was before they invented pocket clip... Lol. Now this is part of history for French people.

I’ve sent so many back. My problem is that I usually find reasons to keep knives more so than any other item I have collected. Ever since I was a kid having a new knife has put a smile on my face. I can’t believe I never knew this community existed until very recently and I love the knowledge I have gained. I spent years collecting in shear ignorance and wanting to learn everything myself. To each their own but the knowledge is there thanks to the information revolution in part and your ability to describe facts that are organized and relatable.

I’m at the point where I have enough knives to almost know what I like and almost predict what I won’t like… but finite money and too many options. I’ve hit a weird wall where I “like” a lot of what I see, but don’t see value in spending on most of them anymore.
I’m almost thinking that I’ll have to pay for custom work to get what I actually want… and then I’ll find all
of the minor annoyances with my own designs after using them for a while and be right back where I am lol.

As someone who adores the Opinel and has over 20 of them, I will start by simply saying, your opinion is YOURS. I can't change that. And the only reason I'm saying this is because I just want you to take a second to imagine this from our (Opinel lovers) perspective. A knife is not just a tool, It's also a statement. To us, carrying something with a history dating back before the Great War is already showing a traditional value. Also, the same way some people like a classic Pocket Watch instead of a massive Diver or a Smart Watch, people can just prefer traditional style. As I do. Also, the Opinel is unbeatable in price. You can't get a spectacular modern knife for 11 bucks. Also, the slowness of opening is hardly slower than a slipjoint. Besides, the only time an extra second will matter when opening a knife is in a self-defense scenario. Oh, and the steel is nice on the carbon models. Plus, you can choose modern plastic models. So all in all, I get what you mean, but I hope you can at least understand why we like traditional knives such as Opinel. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk, to the one person who sees this.

As someone who loves wood (yeah, because THAT isn't easy to take out of context), I enjoy the look of some Opinels with more exotic handles. In reality though, I'm not very tempted to buy them when there are half a million new knives with cool materials and mechanisms and incredible fidget factor being released daily. Well, I have one Opinel I absolutely drowned in oil, that I take with me whenever I go camping. I've been carrying knives for 55+ years, mostly slip joint cheapies, never had a fancy knife, especially those snappy, fidgety, trick knives most people carry. After my father passed I got his flippity skippity knife that was always loose and eventually fell apart in my pocket. I then started to carry my father-in-laws big Schrade Old Timer until I broke the blade tip. At that point I realized that all these cheap knives are cheap. Instead of getting an expensive folder though I went with a small, full tang, fixed blade that works fantastically! 2 1/2 inches of blade does a great job for all my cutting, foraging needs. Not everyone's tune, but works for me.

  • @81ghale
    @81ghale Před rokem +1

If a person is in to cutting ability of their knives, the opinel is about as slicey as you can get. I don’t own one, but pocket jewelry isn’t my thing, so I understand the popularity of them. Those blades are super thinly ground. That’s why I love my Bailout and Delica so much. Had a couple Hinderer’s but they’re too thick to use as a knife compared to other options. But pocket jewelry is a real thing, and to each their own.

I went through a Chris Reeve phase and I kind of know what you mean about the Sebenza. One thing though: the blade shape makes a big difference. To borrow your analogy- a drop point versus a insingo blade on the same knife is like the a rock tune played with an acoustic vs an electric guitar. The spirit of a Sebenza and the spark that it generates is a whole lot more appealing to me with a insingo blade. Likewise, I can’t fathom an Umnumzaan without a tanto blade. I freaking LOVE that thing- and I don’t typically like tantos. Incidentally- that Sebenza in your video is off the charts. Too bad it doesn’t have an insingo!

When the lines around the nails cracks up and get bloody, not even thumstuds and automatics knives can be used, the only solution in these occasions is Spyderco or designs alike 🖐️🖐️

I like the sound of your Dad. He reminds me of me, except for all the murders. No one touches my radio dial either or the thermostat! It's classic rock or start running. But not upstairs because I'll get ya.

This is my experience with Benchmade, and cross bar style locks in general. I hate them lol. I don’t understand people’s obsession with a lock that seems to be basically inferior. The durability of a cross bar style lock is solely dependent on a couple of fragile little omega springs. I don’t mind having to take knives apart, but I don’t want to have to do it once or twice a year just to fix the lock so that it doesn’t turn into a portable non locking guillotine lol. I owned a bugout for six months and never carried it. Both omega springs snapped from couch flipping. And the coated s30v blade rusted while sitting in a Pelican case with D2 and 1095 blades that are in perfect condition lol. It’s just not my thing. Yeah, Benchmade has a great warranty…. I think it’s out of necessity to fix their crappy locks lol😂

I am taken aback all the times I read about broken Omega springs! I totally believe it, but I have never seen it on mine and other's knives. This is why I like 781 Anthem: coil spring version of cross bar lock. I remember my encounter with the first knife to have this lock and how it became me and brother's favorite. Today I am jaded against liner lock and frame locks. Really good with lockback knives and button locks, enjoyment!

My opinel is my small game prep knife, sharp, easy to sharpen, and dirt cheap so I won't care if I lose it in the woods... Only issue is, I've not managed to lose it in a decade!
That said, I really have no attachment to it, if I lost it I'd just use something else and probably never replace it, but until the I'll keep on using it, I mean, I already paid for it right?

Opinel knives are purpose driven. Their mushroom/foraging knives are fantastic. However there's no reason for their other offerings imho.

And I thought I I was the only person that didn’t like sebenza’s! Granted I’m way to picky and usually find reasons not to keep knives. I feel like I’ve had every production knife under $300 and the pm2 and benchmade 940 are the only 2 I’ve kept for any amount of time.

As a musician I'm very conscious of the potential for what you described as far as thinking of oneself a purist. Honestly as I grow older I like even more and more diverse genres of music. That said, I still cannot get myself past the fact that I think the Golden Age of rap was the eighties and nineties, and the majority of what is out now sucks. I keep trying to give stuff a chance and not judge so much on my knee jerk preference, but more by the actual talent and production put into a piece. With the amount of music that is out right now, and the bar for publication being much lower with self-production, I have found a whole lot of good rap in this new generation In Pockets, and corners, of the internet. With all that consideration, new rap still sucks, lol. Now get off my lawn.

My brother loves opinel. He even spend incredible amounts of time handmaking custom handles with fine wood for them. I make fun of him each time he draw his knife, but he has valid points. It's the lightest while having a full round handle, the super thin geometry makes it one of the best slicers, you can have them at any size convenient, the number 8 being the most popular, an 8cm is already a good size of blade. He never hesitate to do anything with his blade, from opening beers to pry, carve wood, scape etc. It is thin and may broke or chip, but who cares, the tool cost 8€...
I hate it, but yeah he makes fun of me with my precious knives while I am so careful with them, because of nice and expensive. Valid point.

To be honest just consider the price of an Opinel is less than 8 euro in France. Consider aswell that the traditional manufacture didn't change since more than a century
