I’m pretty much a “budget knife” person but, i still do enjoy watching your video’s, even though most of what you show is too expensive for me. My most expensive knife is my Bugout 535-3, carbon fiber, S90V. I paid over $250 but, now I’m going through exactly what you’re talking about in this video with the Protech Malibu. I do this same thing with snare drums! The difference is that the snare drums pay for themselves and more after playing gigs!! Thanks for the video bro!!

You have some very nice Knives my friend. I do understand the expenses on the Handgun side of things. I own 40 that are under $600, then another 30 that are under $800. That not being enough, and my excuse is: I need this for our Channel, I have another 15 that are under $3,000 each just to cover a large bunch of our Custom 1911 Pistols. All used for sport & enjoyment, and lastly to carry off duty for self defense and the defense of others. I Retire December of 2022 and I will work on our Channel full time if they are still up and running. Stay Safe to you, your family and all your viewers. God Bless. 🤠👍🇺🇸. B9USA Sr.

I remember when a 100 dollar knife was ridiculous. Back when I started seriously collecting it had to be assisted and had to be American made if possible so the top of my knives were the Kershaw Blur and Leeks and a few Benchmades. Now I am buying Medfords and Olamics Micro-Techs top I have paid so far was 650.00 but a Large Inkosi and a Deadlock C is on my list.

I’m still hoping to get my hands on that SMF. Not because it’s $475 retail. It’s a $475 knife. It’s worth that. I’m not going to pay $800+ for one.
I’m to the point where I wish Strider would go the same route Microtech did, and sub these out to a manufacture. All I want is a hard use knife, I plan on using hard if the need arises.

This is all in about a 2 month period. Spot on diagnosis, Brother!

I wish I could stop. It started with collecting hot wheels then I went to collecting flashlights and I would never spend over $50 on a light then it was never over $100 for a light then finally justified a $700 flashlight now I’ve moved over to knives and I would never spend over $50 for a knife then the knife world jumped quick to never over $200 and to where $300 is the normal knife price and I will never spend over that $300 on a knife. The $300 knife is where I’m at now but looking at some $450-$500 knives telling myself hell you spent $700 on a stupid flashlight you can definitely go higher on a knife right ?!?

This was so relatable and well formulated. For me “that one knife” is the benchmade 940. And because I live in the Netherlands its costs the euro equivalent of 300$ which is a lot of money for me since I’m only 17. Now I’m waiting for my birthday this summer to buy it as a gift for myself, I really can’t wait but I keep wondering if its going to be worth it.

Desiring better utility got me from gas station knives to $30-50 knives. Better materials got me to $150. Design got me to $300. I was there and thought FOR SURE I was done. But then the price intrigue got me up to $400-500. I literally just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. That’s where I am now and own a few knives in that range that I love, but the itch to go up hasn’t hit me…yet.

Yea my biggest hurdle was stepping up to a Hinderer. I honestly first saw them when I was buying custom hardware for my benchmade and I kept seeing Hinderers in the background of their pictures, I looked them up and saw that $425 msrp and then saw the $500 price tag on the secondhand market. Then spent the next six months trying to justify it to myself because the hinderer was just so damn good looking. And yes I got mad at the knife word for them being so expensive and I just couldn't get the damn knife out of my head. I then started to research them to find the one I'd want if I did spend the money. During those six months before I got my first Hinderer I couldn't stop thinking about it. Found the one I wanted saved the money, made the plunge and now I'm hunting down my third one lol I'm also saving for a Shirogorov lol a knife twice the price of a Hinderer. My problem now is I can't justify buying a cheaper knife. I look at my $300 Benchmade as a low end knife now and honestly will never buy one again. Knife collecting is such an odd thing. The mental hoops we jump through. Once you rip the bandaid off the first time the second is WAAAYYYYYY easier.

And now, on comparison, Socoms price is NOT THAT BAD and I can justify one for myself! Worked with Shiros like a charm 😁

This phenomenon was studied and named by economist Thorstein Veblen, and such items are known as “Veblen goods”. The demand increases AS price increases, because simply owning one is seen as a status symbol. When you juxtapose this with consumers in a third world struggling to purchase necessary goods, it starts to attain an unethical stink. There are some profound economic implications in tying up currency in ‘overpriced’ status symbols, it gets pretty deep and interesting. I think it’s important to remain aware that these items prey on the weakness in human psychology- FOMO (IG drops, wait lists) and insecurity (status). I can’t get one? I NEED ONE. It’s not accidental that this is the basis for many business models in knives and other so called “collectibles”. We all need to think about the ethics of consumption, now more than ever.

Love to buy new scales and customize them, new pocket clip maybe a backspacer. At first I balked at the price, who would pay 170 to 200$ for one knife! "Maybe this element..."
Advertisement pops up saying, "Everyone loves mushrooms!" 🍄
I was a little confused to say the least.
I have been thinking about it, and I can honestly say, the vast majority of my own personal intrigue is the intrigue of others. I am also a craftsman of custom items, including customizing axes & a few other edged weapons. You can see some of my work on my channel. I think it's the last "CZcams short" I uploaded a few months ago. It's called "The Cyclops Staxx Axe." So, I know why certain knives cost so much more. The price is honestly not any part of intrigue to me. It is just another obstacle preventing me from owning beautiful pieces of craftsmanship that call out to me like a Siren song. I also had the luxury of living within 30 minutes of BladeHQ storefront, until the pansies shut it all down with "no comment" on whether or not they'll ever open those doors again. All due to the facking beer bug.
Anyway, I wish I could get more knives, but it just ain't in the cards right now (except for the Factor when it finally comes out, I already have the money saved for it 😬). Hopefully someday I will be able to own a grail knife. When that day comes, and I begrudgingly spend way too much, and your mocking voice pops into my head saying "I told you so! Neener neener neener!" as you wag your new crooked toenail scalpel in my face... I will have the balls to tell you about it. After all, it would be the only honorable thing to do.

I absolutely love this video. This topic could be posted under any enthusiast sub-Reddit. The amount of negativity and pettiness that “nice”, “high quality”, and “expensive” collections/purchases evoke is astounding to me. Happens in /r/Goodyear welt and /r/MaleFashiomAdvice all the time.
And I recently got into knives and realized the good ole’ boys also made up disproportionately large vocal crowd.
Look at the shiny things and go “Neat!”, or stfu. Or at least give an interesting critique, start a civilized discussion. But nope. “My $50 [thing] things the same as your $350 [thing]. WTF duDE WhAT a WAStE!!.!! YuR DUm”
Sorry, I just can’t stand these people who are too dense to realize they’re being annoying in their vain attempt to virtue signal/cope with their own inability to afford and/or appreciate a high quality/handmade/well designed/well finished item. Are there crazy decreasing marginal gains on investment? Probably. WE KNOW THAT. It’s completely absurd. FANTASTIC, video, MC.

Exactly, you always ask why does it cost so much. But equally important is the value you will get when you go to sell it. Because that’s the real cost, the difference in what you paid and what you can sell it for in 6 mos. Is the real cost. That’s how I justified my 1st CRK, sure I paid 450 but 6 mos later I can sell it for 440, then the actual cost is almost nothing.

I would never overpay for anything. Why? Because if I want it more than the price tag I didn’t over pay haha. I definitely didn’t over pay for my $680 shadow Scarab because I wanted it more that that 680. Just tell yourself you’re not overpaying and you’re not. Been working for me (and not my bank account) for years.

You can own it. They can’t stop you from owning it. It might be illegal to carry it in public but even then they have to catch you out with it.

Nobody outside of the knife world understands this as a hobby. I get a lot of strange looks and comments when I’m on lunch break perusing the websites. The only family member who gets it is my daughter who now has her own collection
