You should install a gas tank at the yard. There must be a fuel delivery company in town that could keep it full for you. Think about how convenient that would be, just top off before leaving on rescue missions. Chances are you’ll probably run out of gas less often.

We can all arm chair quarterback on what should have been done. Part of Matt’s problem is so many different people driving these vehicles and not one person probably responsible to make sure all the rigs have full tanks, all the rigs have proper rescue ropes shackles, etc. Matt and his crew have, for the most part, amazing skills at getting vehicles out of very bad, dangerous situations that others have gotten into. So not being totally, anally organized just isn’t a strong suit. But what is more important is how many folks helped out other folks in this video. I count at least 5 groups that went above and beyond to help another human being out of a jam. Including the Union Pacific rail road. That is wonderful. Matt - Since you reveled your weakness, How do we guard against it. Idea 1: During some pulls the vehicles are not heavy enough, Add a 30 gallon gas tank on each vehicle. This is a reserve tank not to be used except in emergency. Vehicle is not to be used unless reserve is full. Each member of the recovery gets $20 bonus if the reserve is needed. (The weight of the gas will increase pulling capacity and the $20 will incentivise you not to run out.) Idea 2: Vehicle are not allowed to go on a recovery until filled with fuel in main tank.

Years ago I was pulling my small fishing boat in the early fall morning hours going to a lake.
My buddy and I got into an argument about whether there was frost on the trees or whether it was dew. I stopped right there in the middle of my lane because we hadn't seen anybody on morning either direction. It would only take a half second to hop out run over, yank off a little branch, and run back to settle the bet. I jumped out and ran across the opposing lane to the side of the 2-lane road. Just about the time I reached up to grab the tree I hear him start screaming and freaking out because a flatbed semi had just rounded the curve behind us and really speeding.
I freaked out and ran over to the truck, jumped in and tried to get it in drive to at least start to going forward. We were both fully prepared for impact for the semi slam into my boat launching it up into the back of my cab while also hitting the boat trailer which would also launch me off the road at some weird angle. As I looked back I noticed that the truck was crossing the double yellow and moving into the opposing traffic lane. It was then that I realized that my door was still open because closing it wasn't a priority when I thought we were going to get hit anyway. But when he moved over to try to pass, now my open door WAS a big problem as it was a very narrow two-lane road. I didn't think I had enough time to grab and pull my door closed but I tried anyway. The whole time I was reached out I was thinking that my arm was going to get sheared off. I can now hear the scream of the tires and the roar of the big diesel engine I had no time to look.
The door slammed shut within milliseconds of that big semi truck screaming by my window in the opposing lane of traffic.
At that moment we both saw God... And as soon as it was upon us it was gone behind another above the road and everything was silent again.
I was so thankful and was laughing about the ordeal - but he was SO PISSED!
We talk about it occasionally but he still won't laugh about it!

Lol it truly serves you right Matt I hope it teaches you a lesson not to soon be forgotten because you have had thousands of ppl warn you it's so simple put at least a two gallon can full of gas in the recovery vehicles and keep it there always

Especially when some recoveries take a while and burn even more fuel

Maybe you should have a gas can as a backup in case something like this happens again, 5 gallons would go a long way, great video Matt and Tom. Love your videos as always. ❤❤❤.

That was a fun one. Don't change anything with your fuel policy. It made a pretty normal recovery into a fun episode to watch

Fun fact from mexico: you can eat jushua tree flowers, they’re called Chochas. you clean them and separate the petals then leave them with 3% salt overnight that will take care of any bug and will get rid of the bitternes, then sauté them with garlic, onion and some green chiles, and that’s it, enjoy!

Loved the side bar of the Joshua Tree, brought back memories of the U2 album of the same name. Thanks for the distraction Tom!

I'd love to see the Morrvair get a secondary gas tank installed as a project.

That's a brilliant idea 💡 but we fear that would only mean he would be driving around with TWO EMPTY TANKS... lol 😂

This shows there are still good people in the world. When the people you go to help help you out proves that for sure.

I have done a little off roading in my life and what I learned was fill up as soon as one gets home. At the end of the trip! Not just before leaving. If you live in a wet area you get less water vapor in the system by keeping the tank full.

Just camped in JT Natl Park 2 weeks ago and it was like Christmas in July. Almost every plant and yucca was blooming. Insects everywhere. Caterpillars, moths, butterflies. Sooo green, so alive, so much wildlife. It was incredible 🤯🤯🤯
