Many hotels and casinos Sammy performed at would not allow him to stay there over night simply because of the color of his skin. Kudos to Frank who refused to perform anywhere that would not allow Sammy to stay there
TheNYgolfer Sammy was a great talent and Frankie called him his brother, what a wonderful thing, its a shame there are still some ignorant people still around. RIP Sam Frank Dean.
Agreed. But back in the 50's and 60's, as powerful as Frank was and as good a friend as he seemed to be with Sammy, even Sinatra wasn't powerful enough to protect Sammy from all the hatred and prejudice he had to put up with. We're talking the Civil Rights and Jim Crow era. I could only imagine how much worse it would have been for Sammy had he grown up in the South.
0:58 hearing Frank’s voice break when he tells Sammy he loves him and “you’re my brother” just brings a tear to my eye. These two where the definition of “Bromance”!

Frank Sinatra jr said Frank died a little when Sammy passed. See why, they were part of each other. Frank was too distraught to attend Dean's funeral. Real Gents.
joliecide : I don’t think Dean ever got over Dean Paul’s death. I think Frank was pretty devastated when JFK died, even though the President uninvited Sammy to his inauguration.
To each his own Thomas... I like the Beatles and Dylan too, but they play in a different league (ie. a different generation.) Ask 10 young peaple today who they were and maybe one of them will know who they were. Its all a generations game...
Anthony O'Sullivan Compared to Sinatra, Elvis played second fiddle, and he knew it. Just check his many biographies. It was Sinatra who brought Elvis back to popularity after his military service - something he regretted later as Elvis represented the next generation of so-called teeny-bobbers. But I will not deny that Elvis was talented, just state that in MY very personal opinion Sinatra, Martin and especially Davis Jr. had much more talent than Elvis ... it just belonged to an older generation.
+thomas jones Sinatra and Martin were singers. They took songs others wrote and sang them well. Not everyone can be a songwriter, musician, and singer at the same time. You have do to more than write the song.
+thomas jones O.K. I freely admit that luck has a place next to talent, but how do you explain all the lucky talentless people that seem to grace our lives with their 'gift.' At least Frank and Dean and Sammy had the talents to back up their lucky break. Dylan has had a great impact on many talented people, but he also was lucky; it was not all hard work.
I loved Frank and Sammy as a child I am 66 years old these people were bigger than life Respect to Sammy and Frank two legends and friends There will never be another Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis Jr I love these memories
No problem, this is from my dads old tapes. He went to see Sinatra 4 times also and he's a major big fan of him. He taped mostly every special from the 80s and 90s that they had on tv. Also the basement is just full of Sinatra Records, memorabilia, and pictures.
I’m a 50 yo Brit And absolutely love Frank.. We listen to him all the time on our Internet radio... I would have loved to have been one of the millions of people that were entertained by Frank and especially Sammy and dean in a hotel or venue for an evening.. God bless them..
Goddamn it whatever you want to call him, at the end of the day, Frank Sinatra was one of the best friends you could ever have. Whether it was trying to get clubs in Vegas integrated or helping nurse Sammy back to health after he lost his eye. You can tell how happy and proud Frank was of Sammy in spite of everything Sammy was up against. Frank was always supportive of him.
Back in the day, many casinos would not allow Sammy Davis Jr. to stay in their regular suites or even perform because of the color of his skin. But Frank said to many of the owners, "if you don’t have Sam, you don’t have me." That says it all about these two and Frank's loyalty to Sam. Society today could learn a thing or two from Frank/Sam's relationship.
As Sinatra fans know, there was an estrangement between Frank and Sammy Davis Jr. for several years during the 70s over Davis' use of cocaine and other drugs. Ultimately, there was a reconciliation between the two men and there was a successful tour in 1988/89, initially with Sinatra, Dean Martin and Davis, then with Liza Minnelli-The Ultimate Event. Davis is visibly moved by the tribute from his friend of more than forty years.
@@florenciolopez7622 Dunno why you’re callin’ bullshit on what was said, pally, since it’s the truth. Frank did cut ties with Sammy during the period when Sammy was doing cocaine. As to the Together Again tour in ‘88, that was Frank’s idea-it was announced in December ‘87, and kicked off in March ‘88; Frank told Sam it’d be worth it if for no other reason than to get Dean, who was grieving the loss of son Dean Paul in a jet crash in March of ‘87, out of the house for awhile. Dean did the first five or six shows with them, but then left the tour on account of what he claimed was a kidney ailment flare-up, although it was also likely due in large part to his heart not being in it having just lost Dean Paul, a loss from which he never fully recovered. He was replaced on the tour with Liza, and it was renamed The Ultimate Event.

Well it's pretty much accepted that he was an egotist. But when you're that talented I guess you get away with being an egotist. So in that context it really was a big compliment to Jackson.
Excellent point. When someone really is super talented it isn't ego...it is just reality. Also, the French have a great phrase, "autre temps, autre moeurs." Loosely, it means different times, different customs. It is so easy to look back and deride "things," but culture, society, technology changes all the time.
