- I was recently asked in a comment, why I used a post fader send for some parallel compression in another video, and it made me think. Should I have used a pre fader send? What problems would I have with either?
I've talked about using sends for a number of different applications, but when should you use a pre fader send or a post fader send?
In this video, we'll go over what a pre fader send is, and what a post fader send is; When you can use one over the other; and some creative ideas for using the opposite of what you might think.

Thanks for creating this video! This was really helpful. I knew what pre vs. post fader did, but didn't any sense of how to apply them. It was really helpful to see the contexts of different uses and additionally the choice to switch like in the reverb case or the use of VCA to maintain balance when using parallel compression.

I normally just pre fade everything going into my bus/aux/return tracks because using post fader can really mess with maximizers, limiters, reverb or even compressors especially if you use a lot automation curves during the mix. It took me a while to figure out why suddenly some of my tracks would just start clipping or overdriving. It was because of using post fader.
Bro I had to drop a comment you have taught me more about this DAW then Presonus😂😂I've been back and forth through google searches all night about different tools, vsts,meanings behind certain terms, how to do this, how not to do this, and what happens if you do certain things with in the DAW. Every video I watch of yours I found everything I was looking for. I am a indie rap artist and since the COVID crisis all the studios are closed😬😪so I pulled out my interface, mic, and lap top so I could contenuing making music also decided to start learning more into mixing with your help I've gained alot of new knowledge just by watching your vids. I've just started watching your videos and I'm intrigued. Great explanation in all of them so far.
And about your video on the presonus iostation 24c, kindly explain how to independently control the inputs with regards to line switching and phantom power.
Please let Presonus know that we need another headphone jack in the front of the unit for the producer while the artist uses the one at the back. A splitter could probably be used but getting separate mix for each will be very difficult.

If you’re just trying to record the bass, you don’t need a send at all. Just go direct into the interface to record.

pre fader is the loudness of the effect and post fader is how much signal you send? im new to this.
No, pre vs post is where the send gets it’s copy of the signal from. If it’s pre-fader, the level of the main fader does not effect how much of the copy signal is sent. If it’s post fader, the main fader WILL effect how much of the copy signal is sent.

does post fader affect panning
It doesn't effect the panning of the main track, but if you have a send on something that is panned right, and the send is up the middle, you may hear a shift in pan location. What you can do is also pan the send to either the same side or to the opposite side for some cool width. Check out this video I made, czcams.com/video/dugSIaQESXw/video.html
Is the level of pre fader automatically at unity?
It auto sets to -6, and as far as I know, that can't be changed right now. What you can do is Control Click or Command Click on the send level to snap it to unity.
