POST FADER Send vs PRE FADER Send FX in CUBASE
Many engineers are confused about the difference between pre-fader and post-fader sends.
My goal for this video is to eliminate that confusion for good!
Check out the video for a few examples, and one of my best tips on when to use pre and post-fader sends.
Still have a question about this (or anything else…), leave me a comment below!

Another special use for pre-fader: While recording vocals I send them pre-fader into a reverb. As I use direct monitoring I turn down the fader of the pure vocal track and use just the reverb to make me feel more comfortable while singing and still have no latency on the vocal itself.
Yes, definitely... I actually made a video of this recording technique.
I give you a ''PRE'' Tumbs UP cause I know for a fact that this gonna be a Great Video :)
Lol, Thanks, Michel!
Thanks for answering this question So comprehensively Chris. It’s all very clear now. The fact that I didn’t previously fully understand pre/post sends just go to show how many little pieces of knowledge we need to get our heads around! Thanks for helping on that journey!
and here is a POST thumbs up!
Chris, I remember an old video of yours about inserts pre or post faders (not sends as in this video), where you mentioned that insert post fader could make sense for a dither, for example. That was interesting to know, too.
That's the video you're referring to czcams.com/video/ENK02gp4j4A/video.html :-)
Great video. Pre-fader is also great when controlling effects in Dub music. Like temporary have the sound of a rim-shot through a spring reverb, without the actual rim-shot etc
prefader can also be used if we want to eq the reverb effect and delay effects....that way we can only hear wet signals and making it clear with eq will be easy as hell....agreed ?
Perfect examples. Going back to my mixes to sort that out now!
Very helpful content as always, thank you sir
number one teacher, always providing good videos❤❤❤
Very helpful, Chris, thanks!
Thank you Sir.. I've learned alot.
Great video!
ooooooooo finally a video explaining this thing
Thanks Chris!!! Being waiting for long
You're welcome!
I’d rather choose “PRE” Thanks for your video
very helpful, thank you
Thank you so much sir
Can u please make a video on the loudness War I would like to hear your take on it
Thanks for this. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Chris - Another good and clear Video. These basic staff are important and good refresh for the basics are most valued. Thanks Amram (Israel)
Very cool... I'm recently connecting...
I enjoy your level of exp....thank you for sharing...very helpful, I look forward to watching more of your vids...
Very useful. Thanks Chris for sharing. Cheers!
My pleasure!
Great one Chris Thank you
Very welcome
Thanks for this video. I learn a lot from your videos. For the parallel compression case would it not be easier to just do compression in an insert if the compressor has a mix knob? Then you can setup the relationship in one place (the mix knob).
Yes, that works as well, unless you EQ your Compressed signal or add other processing to it
Thanks Chris.
Any time!
Thank you so much
Of course!
Bonjour..
Were to you send your fx chanel...by default it goes to stéréo out ?
thanx for sharing
Of course!
Eternal question it seems :-)
Thank you
Of course!
Hey at the part where you tell us when you should use a pre-fader send, the chapter is called "When yo use a post-fader send" and that confused me a little... but very nice video!!!
Thanks for letting me know! Fixed :-)
This pre-fader is maybe also useful to male an instrument sounding far, correct?
Super
Thanks
Can you address parallel compression in this video? Great job.
I did :-)
Thanks for the video. Would you please make a video about Logical Editor as well? you have the one that I saw but we need more detailed video pls.
To be honest, I do not work a lot with the Logical Editor outside the presets, but I can make a video on this for sure
@@mixdownonline thanks a lot
I appreciate your help and honesty
How would i put an fx channel or group channel before the inserts? I'm trying to put 1 plugin on all my vocals before it hits the insert effects, and i don't want it to be realtime
You can't in Cubase, for a workaround, you would have to use the audio track to send to a reverb, then route the output of that track into a group track that you will use to add Insert Plugins.
@@mixdownonline okay thanks!
Could you also just link the drum channels? (My Cubase is a bit rusty hence watching this awesome channel)
Yes you can, but a VCA will work better since it's gonna keep a relative volume, balance between the track and parallel compression channel
what would we do without you
One more common time to use Pre-Fader sends: You may need to use them to make a Cue mix for the artist. Cubase Pro har 4 decicated Cue sends, but I'm not sure if all versions of Cubade does. Anyway, if you use a DAW that doesn't provide dedicated Cue-sends (or you need more than 4 in Cubase Pro), you need to use the "regular" sends for this purpose.
In this case it's vital to use Pre-fader sends, as you don't want the musician(s) mix(s) to change when the engineer changes a level or mutes a channel.
Yes, for someone not using Cubase Pro with Cue Sends, this is a very good alternative, thanks for sharing!
I always found it odd that when adding sidechain sources in cubase they default to POST
Good observation
Another use is DI instruments sent to effects and you want to be able to mix in the dry signal. 😉
That's pretty cool as well! Thanks for sharing!
Confused me more
