ARB TPMS. One of the WORST products I've ever reviewed.

  • What a let-down! Normally, the ARB name promises quality, but here is a product that lets the name down.
    This is the review of the ARB Tire Pressure Monitoring System (external type). Suitable for 4x4, 4WD vehicles, monitoring tyre pressures, but no temperature. This is my review shot over seven weeks trying to get it to work. Even after I had the first one replaced, I never got it to work as I expected it to.

      Andrew, at 10:15 you rotated the cigarette lighter part of the system the incorrect way, could this be the reason for the failure. Likewise at 7:30 the unit was not orientated correctly

      Couldn't agree more Pete, not at all boring. If Andrew says a product is good then it is, if he says it's bad you can bet your life it's bad. I too love that Andrew is brutally honest and up front.... no fucking around, what you see is what you get. I'm surprised that ARB have decided to put their name on a product that obviously doesn't work. If ARB sees this video, in my opinion, they need to contact Andrew to put this right.

    It is the dishonesty of the modern world that is so frustrating. ARB appear to have gone the same way as so many trusted names.
    I choose Stanley as an example. The once benchmark for tools are now trading on the name, selling absolute rubbish from China a playing on the brand loyalty card. Everything I have bought in the last ten years that is badged Stanley has been way below par.
    Bosch is another one.
    ARB seems the same.
    They get taken over by accountants and board members who no nothing about the product but know how to increase profits to fuel their huge bonuses. When the name has lost so much respect that the company goes bust, these men will have moved on to the next victim or will have retired to their multi million dollar yacht.
    I am having a rant but I think it is important, all the good people are being conned.
    These giant companies are buying up all the brands and sucking the life out of them.

    I’ve got one of these but the internal sensor type, had it for 2 years, works fine. Like you, I found the instructions totally confusing with unexplained beeping occurring often for no logical reason. But as mine are the internal type, I was unable to rip them off my tyres in a fit of rage and smash them into itty bitty tiny little pieces ... which was lucky for me, as one day I managed to totally fluke my way around the set up menu and got it to work properly. Now I have no issues with the product but someone at ARB needs to get their arse kicked for signing off on those instructions supplied with the unit because they are SHIT! .....(I had to put that in uppercase- I feel sooo much better now) 👍🏻

    I’ve been in the off road industry since the early 70’s and have used several ARB products that are excellent. In recent years they have gotten into a lot of what I call copy cat products and for the most part they were junk. We’ve tried these on 2 customers and took them off due to malfunction. I run a different brand on my motor home and they work great. The other problem I’ve run into on off road vehicles is unless your valve stem is inside the wheel there is a high probability of ripping the sensors off on rocks etc. First time I’ve seen your channel good material new subscriber.

    So glad I saw this. I only have one ARB product and that is their Air Compressor. It seems to work ok. I was planning on grabbing one of their recovery kits and now I have having second thoughts about their product line and quality control. I run with a large group of Tacoma guys who use their products religiously. I'm going to share this as a warning. If ARB held their standards high, they would immediately pull this product from the market and investigate the issue. I hope they are reading this article... I am currently using Denso internal TPMS sensors with a Kenwood head unit that displays the tire pressure and temps. It's flawless!

    I bought a no name TPMS system off eBay for about $100 and fitted it to my patrol. I had one sensor that was an issue but after a quick clean, it was fine. It was far less complicated than this and it allowed me to easily set a high and low pressure for on road, and as well for off road, and it worked so bloody well I was amazed! From memory I also had a sensor on my spare as well.

The ARB name must be paid for when buying their products whether they're good or not. I know which ones to buy and which ones not to buy. This is definitely one i WON'T buy. Some of their products are no better than other brands and way overpriced because of the ARB name. Keep up the great videos mate, love it! Thanks for your review as i was thinking about getting a external tyre monitoring system for the safety reason mostly , if i had a slow deflation at 100 km + speeds as not to destroy a tyre or crash because of it . Having a 4WD where you have to lower tyre pressures for off-road and having to take off those caps every time with the tools would be time consuming and very annoying to say the least . Thank you for your honest review :-)

      Hi Stephen
      I installed these about 12 months ago and found they work well when the alarm went off as I drove home from work. Slow leak caused by a nail. The alarm gave me time to drive back to work and change the tyre safely.
      If I was going Bush, I'd take them all off because they are a bit fiddly.
      For highway driving, I'm now a firm believer.

    Brilliant review and really feel sorry for the frustration you had with it. thank you for doing this review as certainly going to save lot of people the same trouble. This product could even be a safety hazard in it's self, being so random the driver might start getting annoyed with it while driving resulting in possible accident.
    Or the classic "crying wolf to many times" one not trust it , for the one time it was actually correct and tyre was loosing air resulting in an actual blow out or worse.
    I would love to see the reaction of a ARB store manager or someone who's not used to using their products actually try set it up, even from few different branches. Maybe it will bring awareness of the standard of the product really to their attention.

  • @paulchernotsky6827
    @paulchernotsky6827 Před 6 lety +1

    Andrew, I understand your frustration 100%...I used to import a TPMS from the USA over 10 years back into South Africa and it was a fantastic system. My personal system's batteries lasted about that long but turned out it was more expensive to have the batteries replaced ( as it was a sealed sensor) than to buy a new local one....The one I purchased is terrible and all the suppliers say is that the batteries are low... 3 weeks maximum! what I have found though that might be your issue is that the Schreader valve might be set too deep within the actual valve housing (if thats what its called) and when you screw the pressure monitor on to the valve the sensor does not connect sufficiently enough with the Schraeder valve and therefore cannot read a constant pressure. This will give you a incorrect and inconsistent pressure reading.
    I however give you full marks for actually really trying to understand the user manual.... I would have returned it within a day...or thrown it out the window!

    Andrew I loved your review on this. My Comments are as follows.
    This thing is trying too hard to make it too simple, they are following the Apple Method of only wanting a single button, ive seen a couple of other units reviewed by a couple other youtube channels, and they have gone too simple for people who want more customizing.
    1. Why did they make is small enough mount directly over the 12v? anyone i know is going to want it in different places, or will have more than one, then its on all the time and the battery dies
    2. why did they only put one button? a set, up and down + a Reset alarm button would not have been that much more, especially for the price of the product.
    3. Im a failure on this as well, I assume people understand industry jargon, and thats and issue, when you said "threshold" I instantly knew, and I knew what it was asking for, but that comes from me working in the industry. documentation needs to be easier.

    Looks like a rebadged Steelmate. I use their TMPS with external sensors on my 2 4WDs, Both work brilliantly, you can watch the build as you drive on the freeway.
    Temp sensors on any external TMPS will be near useless. The temp displayed will be closer to ambient than that of the critical intersection between the tread and the tyre carcass.
    Either you have received two faulty units, or it's simply user error. I have no issues adjusting the pressure thresholds, units or temp warning on the tmps at all, I found the whole process very intuitive.
    The great thing about the external Steelmate/ARB sensors is they work down at low pressure, like 10psi unlike many of the competition.

Airdown and up after installation to check functionality. This to be done with you filming and their representitive withnessing or even better participating. Better, do not do the job, let them do the job, since you have a complaint, you just eye withness the process and the results.

    There are tyre pressure sensors on our new Holden Trailblazer LTZ , they work fine for road pressures but I’m not sure if you can reset them for off road. I’ve only had it for 1200kms. I’ll have to read the owners Manuel / book of warnings soon. Is there a handy pump topping up tyre pressures on trips and at home?

    Here in Finland you can now legally get rid of even the factory tire pressure monitoring system. When they are brand new they work. Then the batteries of the senders inside the tires run low(it is sometimes a bit cold here and batteries do not like that) or ABS-actuated systems start to act up. They are now officially found to be excess weight and a driver distraction. My H3:s system has started to act up intermittently, so i will just try to get rid of it with the Tech 2. There are way too many useless gizmos in cars and trucks today.

    I bought the Tyredog TD1300A-X TPMS from an Australian supplier through ebay 3 years ago and put them on my Landcruiser Troopy (75 series). It comes with 5 sensors, which means I can monitor my spare too. Been through all sorts of terrain, camping and fishing, crossed moderately deep (knee deep) creeks, beach driving, salt water immersion, thick gloopy mud in the Dwellingup/Collie area of WA, the Gibb, across to Alice Springs via SA. Never had an issue. It's a doddle to set High and Low pressure alerts and temps (even for the spare). Main unit takes batteries, OR cigarette lighter powered cable. The sensors use CR1632 batteries, and they seem to last close to 2 years before you get a low batt warning on the display. Each sensor has it's own separate low batt and loss of signal icon on the main unit, which is also backlit in a white light.
    If you have the main unit on battery power, you can take it out of its cradle and take it with you if and when you need to fiddle with the sensors. I once took it off the cradle outside with me while I aired down to head onto the beach off the Lancelin 4WD area and used it as a means to get pressure readings (only because I forgot to pack the tire pressure gauge in the fourby).
    The Tyredog TPMS might be suitable for your use Andrew. It works perfectly well with my Troopy without any signal problems, false readings and compared to the difficulty you apparently had with the ARB product, a piece of cake to use.

    I had an ARB air locker fitted to my Discovery some years ago. Every time I used it, it filled the front inner guard (where the compressor was mounted) with oil. The unit was purchased and fitted by ARB head office in Melbourne. When I rang the company ( already knowing this leaking oil problem) they said there were no problems with the locker and to just fit a catch can to the unit to catch all the diff oil.
    I have heard and witnessed the rusting bull bars that have been fitted to new vehicles, so in my opinion I would not outlay my hard earned for an ARB product. I must say that some years ago they did make the best bull bars, but not sure now.

    I feel your frustration. The main problem I found with many was I wanted different thresholds for on-road driving and off-road driving. e.g. I want an alarm at 25 psi if I am on road but not if I have lowered pressures for sand driving. Many units you had to program the whole thing all over again to do this which is very frustrating as you have observed. I wanted a unit that could also include my trailer and spares which the ARB one does not do. I eventually found a unit which did everything I wanted really well ( still a lot of mucking around to get it calibrated) but the supposedly 12 month battery life of the sensors ended up being more like one month and I got sick of constantly changing batteries because as a battery goes flat it beeps every minute which drives you nuts on a long trip. Other than the battery life it worked perfectly. The slow leak function worked well (every time you let out air for off road) and the tempreture monitoring was good also.

I had a problem 2 months ago in Botswana on my way to Lekhubu Island. Luckily I had to stop at the vet fence and saw the tyre was getting flat. I am going to Bots in 2 weeks again. This time with 2 spares and I want to get a TPMS as well. Any ideas what I can get? That is available in SA? Love the honesty. I actually think you stayed quite composed. I would have lost it....completely.

    Andrew - i can feel the Pain you had with this product. Nevertheless - i fitted internal sensors during the tyre swap. It was any cheap(ish) chinese product - it would let me set alarms for high and low pressure as well as high temperature alarm and surprisingly worked very well and reliable. Worth to mention these alarms could be set for each of the 4 tyres separately. The unit had optional a 5th tyre for the spare wheel - but unfortunately - the 5th sensor was not included. ! I might can find the the product if i search for a bit.

    Andrew, thanks for the review. I too have an external monitor system. It is a "Safety Dave" product and can monitor up to 22 tyres. It does have the ability to show temperature, but due to the position of the sensor (on the end of the valve stem), it is useless at monitoring the tyre temp.....it is good at measuring ambient temp!!! However, I don't see that as a problem. Let's face it, the reason the temp goes up is due to pressure REDUCING making the sidewalls flex and thus creating tyre temp that will kill the tyre. So, as long as it is measuring PRESSURE accurately (and reporting same), I don't think the temp part is important at all. Also, I don't think mine has an over-pressure setting.....why would it need it? A tyre cannot INFLATE itself (unless it has a in-built inflation/deflation system like a Humvee).....so if you start the day with 45psi it won't go wildly ABOVE that figure, other than normal increases from driving; say 4 to 6psi increase.

  • @ExpeditionAustralia
    @ExpeditionAustralia Před 6 lety +1

    Even if it worked as it was designed to, the fact that you need to take them off to adjust tyre pressures is a deal breaker for me. You need to be able to easily and quickly adjust tyre pressures to suit the conditions and therefore avoid problems. Better to spend the extra $$ and get the internal TPMS - as you said, “worse than useless”

  • @uliman100
    @uliman100 Před 6 lety

    I think as with many manufacturers ARB started with good quality and made a name built on that quality... Making bull bars and protection kit for 4x4's. Then they become this big global company and it gets down to bean counters who decide what products to badge etc... Anything to sell and make dollars... Its a shame but it happens...
    I have also not had much luck with TPMS systems that fit externally... I have a system that I used once until the charge in the display unit was finished... I forgot to remove the sensors and in the end after a few months found that they in fact casued my tyre valves to get over flexed and damaged... All in all a waste of time and money...
    Hopefully you can find a product that does actually work, review it and let us know...
    Thanx for your video's they are always interesting to watch...

    I have read through the instruction manuals on multiple Chinese-branded aftermarket TPMS kits and they all require you to program the max and min allowed pressure for either all 4 tires, or for the front vs. the rear tires. ARB's manual is apparently calling these the "thresholds". You need to set your max and min desired thresholds before operating the system, otherwise you risk having the system set off alarms because you find yourself operating outside of the factory-preset thresholds. You apparently were operating right around the bottom threshold, and with these things not being super precise as far as decimal points of a psi, then you were tripping alarms.
    For offroading, you might find it useful to just turn the audible alarm off (if your TPMS unit allows such) when airing down for the bush. The monitor should still give you a visual readout of your pressures. You just need to remember to turn the audio back on when you air back up for the road for the drive home.
