    I have a main coon Tabby mix & he is so smart & sweet & lovable. He is very protective over his momma. I think he has separation anxiety. He is a momma's boy. He follows me when I'm home & he lets me know when he is hungry or wants treats. I wouldn't trade him for anything. He is a very sweet lovable boy. Yes he is also good with children & he is not hateful he is a big baby. Lol

      Maincoons always choose theur favorite person and want to spend as much time as possible around them. That's how my old boy Ceasar was anytime I'd go and lay down he was right their next to me, I go in the garage he wants out with me, I'd sit on the couch and he'd hop up to be by his big boy. It's means your are their favorite person and they love you.

      @carol... Carol I hope you don't mind I have a couple questions? I have a 12 year old toy poodle who I Love so much but her health is failing and besides being devastated when she's gone she was by my side every time I needed her when I lost my son and mom and my husband of 25 years left me. She sensed each time I was upset and came to my side. So finally my question is will a Main Coon cat do the same and/or cats in general sense you need them and come to your side to comfort you? I'm sorry so long.

    Our 24lb. Maine Coon was the sweetest, gentlest, klutzy cat we ever had. We had to move all the furniture against the walls of our home so she wouldn't tip it over when she was playing. Her coat was easy to care for - she loved being vacuumed with the upholstery attachment! She went through a 50lb. bag of cat food every week. When she went for her 3am gallop through the house it sounded like a herd of elephants stampeding down the hallway. Had her for 18 years, lost her to heart failure.

    When my wife was a child they had a Maine Coon - she was about 5 or 6 and playing in her yard when a neighbor's German Shepard charged into the yard after her. The cat was on the porch, but when he saw what was happening she said it was like he was fired from a cannon; he tore into that Shepard and chased it for blocks before he came back to the house. All the staff was telling us how much they loved her and that the vet had been carrying her around because she was so sweet. The vet tech sent me a video of Sophie charming everyone. Other Maine Coons we've had have been the same way. Contractors who came into our home & were dumb enough to admit they hated cats told me if all cats were like ours, they would have one. My grandma found a Maine Coone kitten in a park a long time ago and named her Honey because of her coloring. I didn't get to meet the cat until she had already grown. I was a kid when I met her and she did not like kids. She avoided me and was pretty grumpy when I found her in her secret hiding spot. She warmed up to me though.
    She was an indoor cat, never going outside. There was a time my grandma started looking after a stray cat and let him in a couple of times. Honey got curious of him and cornered him inadvertently. He understandably got angry and hissed at her. From that point on, she hated all animals.
    One day, my grandma had a terrible fall and ended up passing away in the hospital. Honey fell under our care from then on. She was the best cat I ever had. When she got into her elderly years, she found the courage to go outside for once. She fell in love and it was nearly impossible to make her come inside from the backyard. She spent her last couple of years living outside and having to get the occasional steroid shots because her lymph nodes kept swelling up.
    There came a time when the shots no longer worked and she was suffering. So we had to take her to the vet and had her put down. Absolutely the saddest day of my life. I hope one day to have another Maine Coon in my life.

    My Maine Coon cat was as much like a dog as it was a cat. Very intelligent and mellow. Totally laid back and chill. Always interested in what I was up to. For example, he would jump on the kitchen table and watch me eat dinner. He would never try to get food off peoples plate and was a very respectful observer. If I presented a treat, he would give the morsel an evaluative sniff. Sometimes he would accept it and then jump off the table. Or he would reject it and jump off the table. His choice was often unpredictable. I grew up on a farm and we had many cats and a number of them were really great cats but none could compare with My Maine Coon cat. His only downside was shedding. He would curl up on the floor for a nap and when he got up, there would be a orange/yellow ring of fur where he was laying. A small price to pay for his beautiful coat of luxuriously long hair.

    We have two, father and son. 5 & 4 years old. They’re both a lean 27 lbs or 12.5kgs, very long, very tall, very fluffy. Best day was when we adopted them on my birthday. Baby put on 1 lb or 0.5 kg/week from 10 weeks (adoption at 4 lbs or 1.75 kgs) until he slowed down at 16 lbs or 7.25kgs at 22 weeks. Two majestic lions … mini sphinxes, the most amazing “well dog my cat” feline companions anyone could hope for.
    Their kind and gentle nature is outstanding. They can intimidate the cat-naïve with their sheer size. Larger than any smaller dog over 16” or 40cm tall, more than a yard long, about 1 meter. With huge paws and teeth to protect themselves. Their purr can be intimidating with its intense volume and the vibration evident on their neck. All they want is a little patience, respect of their personal space, and cuddles/skritches. Well, food too. They are very food-motivated and very smart. They are cunning though so don’t let them manipulate you.

    To late my mother and I are owned by two of them. They were litter mates and since they figured out the route between our houses here on the farm we let one or the other or both cats out and and they go between the two locations. They even got along with my with my hyper Brittany Spaniel named after Ozzy Smith of Cardinals fame. They are very protective of the people and children especially that they grew up with. Great cats almost like having dogs except for the self cleaning thing.

  • @a.katherinesuetterlin3028

    The thing people might want to think about concerning Maine Coon cats is if you get one from a shelter, and its fur has a tendency to mat as badly as a Persian cat's fur does, your Maine Coon could very easily be part Persian, even if they don't have the trademark smushed-in nose. They therefore need lots of exercise to combat weight gain, especially after being fixed, since both breeds are known for being total foodies, and a cat that has trouble grooming themselves due to weight issues is a cat really prone to needing extra grooming from humans. I speak from experience, watching my bestie battle with Half-Pint, her MaineCoon-Persian mix.
    Problem is, Half-Pint was a rescue from an abusive household, so he never got the proper grooming experience needed to *not* be combative.

    A coworker of mine had one of these cats. Mentioned it a couple of times.
    He invited me over on a difficult night when his younger sister died in the Hospital.
    The Pastorette was consoling, or trying to, the family. I sat in a chair away from the den area that was opened completely to the kitchen.
    The cat came over and laid in my lap where I sat and listened and was practically invisible in their distress. His wife arose and said she was going to make something for dinner for everyone and went into the kitchen closer to me, turning after getting things out of the Fridge she looked at me in shock and confusion and yelled "MARK!"
    The whole family stopped and looked at her pointing at me, and Mark looked over at me. Everyone in shock. "What is this?! That cat hates everyone, including us!?"
    Poor guy, the cat I mean.
    I had learned before to not placate cats, and that they only respect you if you can at least show as much contempt for them as they do you.

    2011 we took my granddaughter's kitten to the vet to have him get shots and set up a future appointment to get him neutered. The vet was shocked, kept asking how and where we got him; his mother had come onto our ranch on Pacheco Pass (ne of Hollister, CA) and gave birth (he was from the second litter) to her babies in the mezzanine of our shop. She was feral, we told her, but with time were able to take and give out the babies after weaning.
    She showed us on her laptop what she had looked up: they were San Benito River Cats, a specific breed going back to Civil War days, when San Benito County and our San Juan Valley were known as the Capital of the World for Hay, supplying more hay than anywhere else for the War; hence, our high school mascot is a Haybaler and the students are known as Hollister Haybalers, but we call them 'Balers.
    So, back then because of all the hay, there was a HUGE rodent infestation, and they could not get it under control; agriculturalists went to Central America, brought back some ocelots, then bred them with some large sturdy local felines; the result was named San Benito River Cats. These cats burrowed into the sides of river banks and did successfully rid the valley of most of the rodent problem. Then, as years went by, they'd disappeared, just faded out; according to the vet, they hadn't been seen in 50+ years, and it was in the books that they were extinct!
    We showed the USDA guys they sent where the mother cat was living, they trapped her and took her away; we were pissed!! WHY NOT JUST LET HER SURVIVE OUT THERE, MAKING MORE BABIES AS SHE'D BEEN DOING, & HAD ALREADY GIVEN US TWO LITTERS OF HER BABIES??
    Anyway, we never heard anything back; case closed, no more River Cats are left, sadly. I sincerely wish we'd NEVER told or shown them anything!!

      Siberian forest cats are even better. They're about the same size as Maine Coon but they have less of the allergen in cat dandruff than any other cat. They have the same personality as the Maine coon too. Plus they like to swim.

  • @MR-rj2qw
    @MR-rj2qw Před rokem +5

    I had 4, but none of those had a low maintenance coat. They get mats even of you brush them. Their tolerance of grooming depends: one is pretty chill about it, the other thinks I am about to murder her (and that one is a cat who comes running to take her medicine). But I don‘t know, there might be specimen with an easy-to-care-for-coat, because it comes up in every Maine Coon video… and even tough all my cats were of this breed their fur was not identical to the touch, it varied in softness and the amount and places of matting.

    • @a.katherinesuetterlin3028
      @a.katherinesuetterlin3028 Před rokem

      You could easily have Maine Coons that are mixed with another long-haired breed, such as a Persian. That was the case with my bestie and her cat (well, technically it's her son's cat, but he's still in high school and living at home, so it's more or less the family cat). Granted, he came from an abusive household, so he was not properly accustomed to being brushed out, let alone having his claws trimmed. So dealing with the abuse only gave him anxiety about being handled. It's not known the type of abuse he dealt with, but I wouldn't be surprised if it involved being hit with a brush. 😔
      All that said, your cats clearly have their own opinions about being brushed, ergo my speculation about them being mixed with Persian (or maybe another long-haired breed).

    • @MR-rj2qw
      @MR-rj2qw Před rokem +2

      @@a.katherinesuetterlin3028 No, they all came from a breeder with a pedigree and a hefty pricetag. But I did not know better and startet brushing rather late, because when they were babies they did not get matting. But still, their reactions are quite mild in comparison to what I see in some other cat videos. You just need to know when they had enough and stop the grooming then. Only 2 out of 4 are still alive and one now has an incurable cancer so their happiness is more important than a perfect coat.
