Messi The Puma is a Big Ol’ House Cat

  • Meet Messi the Puma, now unlike most big cats that exist in the wild or in zoos, this big cat, lives in a 1 bedroom apartment in Russia.
Messi was born in captivity at a zoo in Russia, but suffered from various health problems at just three months old. During his stay at the zoo, Messi was kept in a very small enclosure and was malnourished, which caused him to develop muscle weakness, rickets which is a degenerative bone disease and a urinary tract infection.
The zoo decided that because pumas were not native to Russia, they could not simply release it into the wild, and because of it’s illnesses, that prevented him from living in another zoo or animal sanctuary. So they had planned to euthanize him.
A couple by the name of Aleksandr and Mariya Dmitriev, heard about the sickly cub, and after talking with other puma breeders and learning everything about the maintenance and care of the animal, they took a leap of faith and approached the zoo about adopting it. And to their surprise, the zoo agreed!
Fun Fact: Despite their large size, cougars are actually more closely related to house cats than they are to other large cat species like jaguars and tigers.
Cougars, also commonly referred to as puma or mountain lion, and are members of the Felidae family.
Pumas are native to the Americas, and they are the largest feline species on these continents, with males being up to 2.4 m (7.9 ft) long from head to tail and weighing up to 100 kg (220 lb).Messi is unlike most cougars, he is about half the size of a normal adult male because of his health conditions. The owners also point out that he is very gentle and loving.
    Thanks for watching.

And they all have the same story…. A zoo or circus gave up a cub for some health/space reason. Smh, they don’t give up cubs, for a ton of reasons. They can make a ton of money off those cubs and they don’t lack the resources to take care of them.
You’d have to be totally gullible and/or completely uninformed to believe their reoccurring stories about why a wild animal is always given up as a cub, living with random people who are somehow capable/certified, in their apartment/home that’s a totally inadequate environment 🤦🏻‍♀️
Y’all, they buy these animals from breeders, which are torn from their mothers after birth, so they can imprint on humans, and (even though you think it’s cute) it’s not a healthy/good life for the animal. Plus they make money off people that watch their videos on social media and want to “donate” to their Patreon account, or in another format, to pay for food/meds.
Please don’t continue to support it and please don’t think, “I want one! It’s so cute.”

Well, animal activists are not globally hated for no reason. They do good things for some animals but they also tend to be extremists who see everything in black and white and they tend to forget that humans are animals too. We changed the world because we evolved a capacity to do so, just like every other animal evolved on this planet; that doesn't mean we're meant to be isolated from them and that we can't interfere with nature at all, even in loving ways. Just because some animals are exotic doesn't mean that they shouldn't receive affection or that they absolutely have to live in the wild and obey to their every instincts, with no interaction with us. We used to be hunters as well but most people aren't, now. Does it mean that we're not following our own instincts and that we should drop people on remote islands to live in tribes? How is it better for animals to die in the wild rather than being taken care of by humans? They have feelings like us, they like to receive affection, and to play and they can get attached to someone just like we, and other pets, can. We improved our living conditions using our brains; I don't see why we shouldn't apply it to some animals the same way, when necessary. This couple's motivation was noble and I'm glad they did what they did. I personally would be too scared to do it but when some people are able to, when the animal's been taken care of by humans since it was a baby and if it doesn't try to attack people, I'm not against it. Not all animals are treated equal, even by animal protection groups. I brought a sick baby squirrel at the SPCA once (the animal protection agency where I live). They didn't even try to help it, they didn't examine the animal or give it food, or medication or care, they just put it in a cardboard box as soon as we got there, that they threw in the basement, and they let it suffer and die there. Their reasonning was that they didn't have the time and ressources (a vet) and they had more important things to deal with than a sick squirrel that they probably couldn't help. I understand being busy and having too many animals to take care of, but they didn't even try for 2 minutes and they literally thew the box on the floor, after we spent a few days feeding it and trying to take care of it. Humans are what they are. There are good and bad people everywhere. The couple in this video are good people.

Look at the way he interacts with people, he's very similar to a housecat while indoors and a common dog outdoors. He isn't a threat to anybody. Suuure. Guys, it’s not a coincidence that a bunch of random civilians have wild big cats living in their homes, in Russia. Same with bears and other wild animals/exotic “pets.”

And many house cats are not aggressive in the slightest. That doesn’t make them “like dogs”, it makes them like cats. Cats can be extremely affectionate and docile. Cat behavior covers the full spectrum, ranging from extremely dangerous and ferocious to being very gentle, friendly and docile with not a hint of aggression. There is no one-size-fits-all.

I’ve been watching Messi videos for years. People need to understand that Alexander doesn’t forget for a minute that Messi is a cougar and that he could be dangerous. The difference is messis temperament and ability to interact with other animals and people.
Alexander only lets his guard down when he’s at home with Messi, in a controlled environment. Messi is just different. It’s like that once in a lifetime dog that you’ll never forget. Never really had to train him he just sort of understood you. That’s the way I see Messi, minus the training part. Haha.
I’m sorry but anyone saying that he should be in a preserve or some other “cage”, I think that that cat would be dead inside of a month if he were to leave Alexander and his wife’s care. Sorry I don’t remember her name. It’s not to take anything away from her, she’s 100% committed to Messi as Alexander is. Without their dedicated care Messi wouldn’t even have survived.

I love watching this cat and his family. I started watching yesterday and already have watched many videos. I love cats of all kind and I love seeing how much he is loved and cared for.
