Engwe L20 review: Cheap Utility E-Bike

  • The new Engwe L20 is a cheap utility e-bike that features 20" x 4" fat tyres, a step-through frame and front and rear racks. The 48v 250w motor feels a lot more powerful than the rating suggests which makes it particularly good for hills. It's comfortable and would make a great commuter e-bike or for running errands like shopping. The claimed range of 100 km (62 miles) seems optimistic, but it should easily return 35-40 miles for the average rider.
    I will be publishing a full Engwe L20 review on ebikechoices.com later this week.

    I've had this bike 2 weeks and I love it. I've done 20 reall hilly, really cold miles, around town so far, loaded up with shopping, and the battery is down to 3 out of 5 bars. That's mostly in 2nd/3rd gear, PAS 3, UK legal 15mph, and with unlocked throttle. As I have COPD, I thought my cycling days were over. This has been a godsend. Yes, it's a heavy beast, but you only notice it when wheeling it from the shed, etc. Once you're actually "moving," everything falls into place. It's not as nimble as an MTB or racer, (might just be this old codger), and you wont be throwing it around in traffic etc, but it's solid and will get you from A to B easily. It also looks superbly chunky not like a stick insect city ebike with tiny wheels. I highly recommend this bike. Mine was £949 with free shipping direct from Engwe's UK website.

    I am waiting on delivery of my bike. From past MTB & Gravel bike experience, putting thinner less chunky tyres on the bike will improve the battery range and general handling, as there will be less tyre resistance when riding the bike. I'll be changing the tyres soon after it arrives.I am also disabled with heart problems and I thought my cycling days were over, I am chomping at the bit to get this bike. My bike is the Engwe L20 SE 250W 20" Foldable edition. This bike is cheaper than the none folding edition.

    A comparison between Engwe L20 and the Fiido T1 Pro would make a good video.

  • @simonbean1264
    @simonbean1264 Před rokem +4

    This is basically a Fiido T1 copy at a reasonable price and looks pretty good.The motor is stamped as 250w for compliance but it's most likely the same setup as the other Engwe fat tyre bikes being 48v with an 18 amp controller so nowhere near 250w ! Most of the cadence sense bikes are basically on/off as far as the actual power output. The levels simply adjust the cut off speed of the motor.

    • @simonbean1264
      @simonbean1264 Před rokem +3

      @@ebikechoices It would be a clear win over the T1 if only it had a torque sensor. As I suspected the power is actually over 850 watts peak just shows how silly the 250w regulation is.

    Great video & very thorough. I'm new to biking, 53 and have had numerous knee operations including double knee replacement. Looking for a fat tyre bike for commute of 15 miles round trip. BUT i would want one that could do throttle assist only as well as assisted pedalling for fitness. Could suffer throttle only to 15mph but ability to do 20mph realistically (for safety). Love this L20 you demo'd but any advice on other's would be very welcome. Thank you.

    Good review, thanks. I like the avocado green frame. So if you were to set the speed limit to say 25 mph, you'd think that might increase pedal assist power through levels 1 - 5?

    I am looking for an Ebike that will survive a daily commute of 16 miles round trip 5 days a week in Cornwall and there are 2 STEEP hills on my route. I am not so bothered about speed, just something that will reliably get me to work with minimum effort. Not sure this big heavy Chinese made beast would suit me. These Chinese bikes look like they will only last a short time. I really don't know what Ebike would suit me. I don't mind a little peddle effort, but nothing too strenuous.

      @@ebikechoices Thanks, I have 2k tops. I really like hybrids and have my eye on a Carrera Crossfuse. It has decent components for the price. I have not seen another hybrid with the same or better specs for the price. Not sure if it will have enough power though.

      @ebikechoices Thanks for your reply. I am still swayed towards the Halfords bike as it has the Bosch Active Plus mid motor, Shimano 9 speed gears and Shimano Hydraulic disc brakes. I would never normally consider Halfords for bikes, but I honestly cannot find a lightweight hybrid at these specs for the price.
