  • I really like the practicalities of this Engwe L20 Ebike, the racks back and front making it the most practical Ebike I have ridden so far!
    Although the bike is legal for the UK the motor has the potential to be unlocked to release more power, maybe you would do this if you were riding off the public highway but here in the UK you can ger a severe penalty including points on your drivers license as you wouldn't have insurance, so do this at your own discretion.
    Personally I believe all Ebikes should be allowed a top speed of atleast 20mph thus enabling them to keep up with traffic in the new (ridiculous) 20mph limits. I also believe a throttle can be a safety feature and ALL ebikes should have them fitted and active.
    These are my opinions and I am entitled to them as much as you are to yours:).

    What are your thoughts on Ebikes? Should they be speed limited here in the UK? Currently they are set to 15.5mph and no throttle allowed.
    My thoughts are that I would like them to have a top speed of 20mph, this would enable them to safely sit in traffic and keep up with the traffic flow in these new 20mph areas.
    I think this would make it safer for everyone and perhaps even discourage some riders from riding on the footpaths when they know they will be just as safe on the roads?
    As for throttle assistance again a good thing in my opinion as this could allow a rider to accelerate out of harms way.
    A contentious issue perhaps and some I'm sure will disagree. We are all allowed to have an opinion:)

      20mph is a fair compromise, and throttle control too. Any faster would probably entail having a license and being road taxed, which takes away the beauty and freedom of cycling completely.

      Doesn't make sense to me. Why is it safer to keep up with traffic in 20 mph zone. What about 30,40 etc zones. It's pedal assist,as soon as you fit a throttle it's no longer pedal assist and therefore not a bicycle.

    Those views yhough Sandy...priceless! Totally agree with the speed thing. I've got my cruiser upped and use that speed when at the farm or the stables...Great to quickly check the fence line, making sure all the fences are attending. I can clock up downhill, momentum driven and no power at 35mph, before I bottle it a bit and use the brakes. Think with my fat butt in the saddle and the hammock gear on the bike too got me rolling at those downhill speeds to be honest. Your friend must be stoked with her new gift....very generous of you. Got a Burley trailer for my bike, to carry my power bank and backpack, for when I want to spend time flying the drone for any period of time. Yet to set up the trail camera...think I might wait for the spring leaves to appear, before I set it up, so it's more concealed. All the best from Chislehurst, Kent buddy

      Steve, sounds like you've souped the bike up, are you still using the Himiway? I was impressed by that bike, I gave it to my friend Dickie and he also unlocked it but found battery range did drop quite a bit.

    • @stevetaylor8446
      @stevetaylor8446 Před 4 měsíci

      @@WiltshireMan Yes buddy, still got it...40 miles while living in a pretty hilly area...not so long on the hills, as steep. I could possibly get it about 45 miles, but don't want to drain the batteries down that far. I'm hoping the trailer will come into it's own and thatbitll take a lot of top heavy weight from the bike for the sake of balance in the wooded parts. I am happy I guess, pottering along at 15mpg....just so I can recce a couple of good trees with some concealment, to hang the hammock from. Too fast and I might just miss the ideal spot. When I get to the stables, I open it up and check the fences and horses, while my mate Bex makes me a lovely cuppa...is tempting in some hairy stretches of road to up the speed, but as you know...the older we get, the more damage is done when we come off....only takes a didalo in a car or van(and goodness knows we have enough of em in England) and 5 miles could make all the difference. Yet you look at the difference in one of the Scandinavian countries...they have dedicated cycle paths that you can ride, where you never have to come into contact with motor vehicles and they're even more direct to their destination at the same time
      ..what an amazing infrastructure they have there

    Nice review Sandy, and how very generous of you to donate the bike to a friend who'll make good use of it. I bought one of these (in green) before Christmas. I absolutely love it. With COPD holding me back over the past few years, it's been a godsend. I've got my independence back. I can now go to the doctors, chemist, post office and supermarket without spending a fortune on buses. I will be able to go have a brew in the cuds like I used to, no longer restricted to places on a bus route. After market support is sadly lacking though among ebike companies, and most bike repair shops won't help. As a former cyclist, I should (touch wood) be able to tinker with most maintenance. Again, thanks for the review. It was a good watch. All the best to you.

    You have some good content sandy. I have recently started,in last two years,riding An e bicycle. An e bicycle is pedal assist and this point is crucial for it to be called an e bicycle. As soon as you put a throttle on it,it is no longer a bicycle. I can keep up with cars in the 20 mph zones without the use of a throttle. I don't understand the advantage of filtting a throttle so some can keep up with traffic in the 20 mph zones. What about the 30,40 etc mph. E bikes can go over the speed,that the assist mode,cuts out. As I say as soon as you got a throttle or tamper with the bike overcome the restricted it is no longer classed as a bicycle and should be subject to the laws that govern other vehicles on the road.
    Essentially for me using an e bike is a smarter way of getting some exercise in the country side.
    But I respect your views.

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I would say the biggest advantage of a throttle only comes in the first few seconds. On this particular ebike the assistance doesn't cut in immediately, normally takes two or three rotations of the crank before the motor kicks in, now just imagine your about to cross a busy road, maybe have the bike in a tall gear, then you wait til it's clear and start to cross,
      Now if you have misjudged things you may not be able to get out of harms way quickly enough!
      The throttle is only really practicable in these first few moments or if as in the case of my friend Lorraine her knee packs in and she can't pedal, then atleast she can get home thanks to a throttle control.

    Just finishing breaking in a new L20. My first electric bike so not a lot to compare it to but so far its turning out to be a fantastic machine, robust and capable of getting me out of trouble as well as into it and I am looking forward to the summer so I can really push the range on some long rides. I guess I qualify as an 'older' rider now but have a couple of health issues that make impact exercise like walking or running almost impossible. Having spent a couple of years unable even to ride my mountain bike (my main transport) I was deteriorating in overall physical and mental health and so buying an ebike could have potentially been a costly mistake. I was attracted to the L20 for range and carrying capacity (photography kit on the back rack, etc) but also because I'd seen lots of positive reviews recommending it for those who find riding a traditional bike difficult for one reason or another, with one disablity + review suggesting, "if you can stand you can probably ride this bike." What they should have said was "If you can stand, this bike will take you 40 miles, no problem." After a handful of rides I'm already losing weight, improving muscle tone and am relying on fewer medications for pain management. They should be giving ebikes away on the nhs!
    In terms of some of the broader questions you've asked.
    Not everybody uses speed responsibly and perhaps the current speed restrictions help to make those situations easier to identify. (I have tried the L20 derestricted and its white knuckle like being strapped into a WW2 fighter plane!)
    I am quite keen for cycling to remain egalitarian and available to all and if a rise in speed limits makes this harder (tax, insurance, tests etc) then that is probably counterproductive to the whole, for the benefit of a few (vehicle speed limits are far more severely restricted in those 20mph zones than ebikes are already).
    I understand throttles are a bit of a blessing sometimes, especially with a bike like the L20 which is pitched to older riders, and perhaps there could be something akin to a blue badge scheme that would allow those who need to, to derestrict that. I have barely touched mine save in trials, but for a lot of health compromised riders it is the difference between exercise and no exercise at all. At heart the L20 is basically a sexy mobility scooter for people who don't have balance issues. I think probably with an ageing population as we have, there is more of a positive case to be made for ebikes here than at the speed demon end of the market.
    I read this week the government are launching a consultation round all of this, in the way they do when they realise they're not fleecing enough of the population. We'll see how that turns out soon I guess.

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thats great to hear you are enjoying the L20 and it's getting you out, I have to get out as often as possible if even for just a short ride on my Ebike or conventional bike, the benefits are there for sure and I always feel better after the ride, mind you when the weather has been cold and damp I find the hardest thing is getting the bike out the door, but once out and riding it's a sheer joy:)
      Wishing you the Best of Health
      Sandy

    Agree with all your comments regards speed increase to 20 mph and hand throttle for safety reasons. Common mistake for new riders is stop in to high a gear which results in a difficult pull away at junctions ,hand throttle would eliminate this . Only problem with Chinese bikes is finding a cycle shop to repair or maintain them. I live in Bath ..not one cycle shop will touch a Chinese bike ( I own an Engwe Pro) and love it.brilliant value

    Good honest review of what looks like a really well built solid bike. E-Bikes are a great way to get out and about to places that you might not get to on a normal bike. Thanks for sharing.

      @WiltshireMan  Před 3 měsíci

      I believe it's badged up as 250W and cuts off at the UK limit but I think the motor is probably rated for more power though I don't personally know how to derestrict it. There is another youtuber who has a video on this bike: czcams.com/video/ebFzs3g3TLg/video.htmlsi=Dc5uYiHgb1GxSFpA

    What was the range of the bike Sandy? What percentage of the battery did that trip use? Do you think that you'd be able to ride all day on one battery charge?

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I would say this bike will easily do 40 miles with using maximum assist, as it was I used 33% battery to cover 42km

      Thanks Sandy. I agree with you about the twenty mph and accelerator too, only problem is that so many tearaway kids are terrorising council estattes on unregulated e-bikes at the moment and the police can't catch them so they're not likley to ease up on the rules. @@WiltshireMan

    Well me old mate, looks like a right little work horse that one., Mind you I think the colour might need to be a little more subdued. As for the limiting speeds of Ebikes, that plan silly, I mean even I can get a long on my normal legged powered bike at 25, - 30 with out to much trouble. Good useful Video as always Sandy,

    Maybe keep it in a garden shed.

      They will tell you not to leave it on the charger for any longer than necessary otherwise there could be a fire risk, this is well known now. If you maintain the battery properly the risk is minimal

    I like the look of that bike and when I Googled it I am surprised with the price. hopefully next month I'm moving back to the area I was before my divorce so I'll be back around the forests so that would be a good bike to go foraging and come back with an odd log or 2 for the wood stove😉 how well dose it pedal with a flat battery? Is it difficult. Is there a recommended total weight for it as I'm already 21stone.

      @@WiltshireMan unfortunately I had to sell my honda nc700 to help pay for the legal costs for the divorce which cost me over £4000 just for the solicitors at the end.
      I would like another motorbike again I have still got all my clothing and helmet in storage but I'm not sure what to get wether I start again on a 125 or I look for a 250cc bike just to get my confidence back.
      But after the nearly 8 year gap not riding after the last near fatal crash then I got the Lexmoto zsb 125 for a month then I got the Honda nc700 for maybe 6 to 8 months I know my nerves and confidence will never be the same.
      But there is jobs to do on the house first when we eventually complete and get the keys.
      I have still got my gopro and would like to record again but I thought whether to change the channel name or start a new channel altogether it would be nice if I meet someone who also rides bikes and likes making CZcams videos that would be a great help😆

It gets you out and in the fresh air and you will still get the benefit of some exercise and you can pedal the bike as much or as little as you like

    • @MrPElms
      @MrPElms Před 4 měsíci

      I only watched the first few seconds !
      When I first came across your channel, I was amazed at aĺ the things you were doing, especially the parameter stuff, I couldn't do it, also you seem a talented bloke, knife making etc, explaining historical contexts of your cycling and hiking adventures.
      I keep checking in as occasionally you still make videos where you're not promoting a product but they seem to be coming less and less.
      I still think you're a talented chap and worth watching , it just seems that the channel is changing direction so that you become no different to any other similar channel.
      Of course I daresay you disagree with me, but its just the impression I get.
      Still think you're a talented bloke though !

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Před 4 měsíci

      The main motive for this video was two fold, but most importantly this bike was a gift for a very brave lady who has been battling some very serious health issues, you'd have seen that if you'd watched more than the first few seconds! Still amazed you even watched that much! Please read the title! I always give an accurate description!
      There will be future videos which will have non promotional content.
      The odd promotion is a big help for me, income from watch time is ridiculously low so when a decent product is offered and if I feel it is something that I would like to try and is in alignment with the outdoor nature of this channel then I will that! What is wrong with that?
      Thankyou
      Sandy
