How to Make a Cowboy Hat with no mechanization....Step 1

- In this Tool Talks series, Lil Grizz, the legendary hat maker, is demonstrating blocking which is the first step in making a Pistolero style cowboy hat. (The Pistolero is a narrow brimmed Buckaroo or Gus Crease cowboy hat that was common in the early years of cowboying.) He uses only traditional non-mechanized techniques of hat making. Each hat is built to the customer's exact head measurements. This hat will be a Pistolero in Pecan for customer Burgin. You can order your own custom-fitted, hand-blocked, hand-shaped hat at Etsy.com/shop/HatsByGrizz

we need more of these good ole boys who have tremendous hand skills..and great attitudes
Scared the hat off him in the beginning 😂 cute
People don't have enough respect for traditional american clothing, bless you for continuing to make things right.
Watching him iron the hat is soooo relaxing
This is a surprisingly heartwarming video. It's very sentimental and real feeling, compared to most DIY videos today. Thank you so much for this!
You two just made my night. Love the back and for banter also the little jab about tools being stolen.🙂
thanks!
This is rather splendid. My Father is obsessed with felt hats and old western clothing. He will love this video. He plays old style folk and country on dulcimer and guitar, and sings old murder ballads and traditional songs all the time, (it drives us mental!!). However he would really love to be a hatmaker or whiskey distiller instead.
I will show him this video and I bet he will start steaming some of his hats immediately!!!
This video Is a treasure.
It’s nice to watch a craftsman at work on his craft. Thanks for sharing this info with us!
lil Grizz I really Like the videos your putting out. you've got a new fan. Great work! I'm inspired!
Love your presentation!
this is just soo nice to watch :) great videos!
Hellz yeah, that's how I make some of my hats also!
Big fan I love you two and your rustic shop. Wish I could make a hat with you!!
I wouldn't mind making one with you ma'am!
I have 3 of his hats they are the best. A Lucas, a Traveler, and just ordered a hog hunter vintage body. Great hats.
Saw some of his hats posted on etsy.com (hats by grizz) he has some nice ones in different shapes and styles. I'm planning on ordering one soon.
GREAT Video but hard to hear Grizz audio
Just ordered a hat from you guys, and cant wait. Especially now that I'm seeing the process in person
And it came in about 3 days ago.
Grizz you are one cool fella! I really have learned a lot by your vids. Can you please tell me what knot you tie to create the break?!
I don't know the name for it but maybe in an upcoming video we can detail it.
What kind of material is it? I´m not speak english very well. Love it! AMAZING!
it looks like felt to me, which is basically wool that is very, very, very heavily tangled up such that the hairs lock themselves into a mat
Eduardo Teill fur felt
hi thanks for the video! what stiffener do you use and when?
We use a traditional lac based stiffener. ..... but there are a couple of options you can use....message me on my fb page for more info
Do you guys use wool felt or rabbit or beaver? Also do you sand the felt? I can't find a video of you sanding the hats. Thank you!
We use a mid grade fur felt and no we do not sand it.

Loved this video only complaint is the sound quality.
Unfortunately we are hat makers....not videographers. .... hopefully we can get a better camera someday.....but then if we were making better videos, who would be making the hats....lol
Could you tell me what type of hat block Lil Grizz is using in this video?
so sorry I missed your comment.....It is on our R (Round) block
I would love to see a how to on the hat Grizz is wearing in this video.
It is our Southwestern....here is a link to it in our online shop: www.etsy.com/listing/271362362/southwestern-custom-fit-cowboy-hat?ref=shop_home_active_2
@@hatsbygrizz-madewithjoy1241 thank you!
I would love to make one myself but I havent got nothing but some regular leather...I suppose I should get leather working tools
Well its all felt....no leather.

Where’s part 2
We don't necesarrily have all the steps shown in video....can't give away everything....BUT you CAN come and take a 2 week class
Great videos but you need to put a mic on him
Thanks...but we are very low tech. .... we do not have a mic to put on him.
Remember the cowboys come from spanish conquistadors.
No from the Vaquero's of South America
My only complaint is we did not get to see the finished hat..
The photo shows it....the process takes several days
Jumps
Hey Jumps
That guy looks cool asf but looks like he doesn’t like a specific type of person
Well interestingly enough....Lil Grizz is as about as unprejudiced a person as I have ever met.
Hats By Grizz - Made With Joy I’m kidding Jesus 😂😂
An absolute shame they did not have a mike on him....would have been great to have had half a chance of hearing him clearly.
We are very sorry. Hopefully in the future we will get to a more professional level of videos but at this point we are strictly working from a cell phone.
Yak,yak,yak!!!
The one behind the camera needs to stop talking
Thanks for your opinion Joe...but as you may note from other comments we are not your run of the mill hat makers and neither is our video ... we play off of each other.
The poor audio is my complaint...if the camera holder talks the other can't be heard....in order to "play off each other" BOTH need to be mic'd to have quality balanced audio.....would just make for a more enjoyable vid.....imho
Maybe someday we can get to a professional level of video.
You talk too much woman..
Lol
