HAT SHAPING | How To Get The Perfect Cowboy Hat (Ft Worth, Texas)

- At the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo I had a cowboy hat made for myself. While there I found one of the most passionate hat artists in the business and couldn't resist capturing his process on camera since there is so much that goes into hat shaping and styling. Now I feel more like a true Texan. Even though I've never been a cowboy, I am certainly proud of the state I am from and the culture that exists there.

Man he totally shaped that thing to look like YOU! It's beautiful.
Thanks very much. It was instantly my favorite.
The Raul is a really one
He is, he's determined to do the best job possible. Very respectable.
This young man is a legend 👍RAUL
He sure is. Have you had the honor of getting a hat from him?
I like that Raul hat etiquette. Growing up in church in the south, you'd never catch a man with a hat on inside the church and you certainly take your hat off when you're praying. amen
A lot of things have changed since we were growing up, but I want to do whatever I can to preserve that respect and reverence.
@@josephlearnstheworld Yep! Times be a changin'. And that's ok. I do it because I want to be respectful and show reverence. And I do tend to think it's disrespectful when people do wear a hat inside church, but I do tell myself it's more likely ignorance than malice. God never told us that we were supposed to take our hats off inside church. That's a man made rule. God would rather you have a relationship with him than taking your hat off inside of a man made structure.
It is funny the things that stick with you over the course of your life.
@@ifassnacht sure, I don't expect it's malice. But I think it's a mark of maturity to be aware of things, and taking the hat off just shows that you're more aware of yourself and those around you. It's not necessarily respectful or disrespectful, but it shows people that you're someone who is paying attention, and that is definitely needed more than ever in today's world.
Awesome! Always wondered how you had such a perfect hat!
That's right! I went to the best
When you said go out cowboying, you really went a good ways from DFW. At least that looked like Carlsbad Cavern that you were walking down into. West Texas and New Mexico are some of my very favorite places on the planet.
Yes, we went through west Texas and up to New Mexico. I love those spots too. I think on the video you can see Santa Fe, Carlsbad, Palo Duro Canyon, and a museum in Waco.
Ha, that's right!!
My Respect to Texas State and great People like Raul God Bless 🙏🏻
Thanks very much. I feel lucky to have met him.
Raul is a craftsman. Good to see someone still knows the business.
That's for sure. He lives it.
0:57 his work place look so cool. I feel like i can be there all day 😄

@@chanburii2155 we'll take you there when you come to America mẹ
@@emothino❤❤❤ so nice
So great❤
I feel like I WAS there all day
Raul is good at what he does, and he made your hat ten times better than even his own. When it comes to cowboy hats, nothing says "hipster" more than that popular yet goofy-looking rodeo bend in his brim that's only functional for those swinging a lasso by their head.
Is that where it flips up on the sides?
I think Raul did my hat at the AQHA congress horse show last year
He does a wide circuit of events so he probably did. Where is that event?
great video
Thanks very much, do you wear a cowboy hat?
Great informative vid. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
That’s my hat shaper, Raul is top notch.
That's great! You must live in Ft. Worth. He's my hat shaper now, I won't go to anyone else for my next one.
I actually live in Houston, but when he’s here for the rodeo or helping a store out, I’ll go by and see him.
@@fvela10 I'll probably try to make a visit every ft worth stock show for my shaping needs
[thank, you for you're video]👍👍
You're welcome, thank you for watching. Do you wear a hat?
It obviously Raul loves what he does. If I ever make it back to Ft Worth I’ll stop by his shop.
EDIT: Is the footage at the end in New Mexico.
That's great, you should. Where are you now?
@@josephlearnstheworldI currently live in New Mexico. I have a brother that lives outside Ft Worth. I use to go to the Stock Show and Rodeo on a semi regular basis.
@@nmelkhunter1ah, yes! I just saw your edit. It was in New Mexico. Some at Carlsbad Caverns and some in Santa Fe. There's also footage in Palo Duro Canyon and Waco in Texas.
going to ForthWorth in a couple of months to pick up a couple o cars.... looks like ill be popping into rauls to buy a couple a Cowboys Hats from him....... im from Auckland NZ
I'd recommend finding him via his Instagram or the Instagram of his hat shop. Since he is such a skilled hat shaper he tours around to different rodeos and stock shows for exhibitions and you may need to get in touch with him to know exactly where he'll be. The main shop is located in Ft. Worth, I think. You can find both his instagram and the shop in the description of this video. I hope you can work with him, he puts every bit of thought possible into each hat.

So interesting❤
You'll enjoy the stock show when you finally visit.
[speaking of the Dallas Cowboys NFL 🏈 team that you mention on you're video. my second cousin plays for this team jhon jett]👍👍
Wow, that's so great. Next year he'll bring home a ring for sure!!
[keep, you're video rolling in]👍👍
Thanks for the support, I will.
cant wait to be back!
Soon!
Can’t wait for you to get back! 😘
damn that hat matched him perfectly
Thanks very much, I love wearin' it.
Such a good video! Hats off (couldn't resist!) to Raul for the amazing craftmanship and yourself for the well-put-together content. Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much for watching and telling me how you feel, it's very motivating. Do you wear a hat?
I love Texas Went to San Antonio got my first cowboy hat there and boots love it The cowboy hat is legendary
Nice, where are you from? Is it normal to wear a cowboy hat where you live?
@@josephlearnstheworld I’m from California
Born and raised in San Anto. Grew up on the family ranch back in Mexico also. Always in my hat lol
@@chriscastillo6299 are you still ranching?
Love this! FORT WORTH! ❤️❤️❤️
Can't wait to be back
ME TOO!!
Nice hat!
Thank you, sir. I'm very much enjoying it.
It’s an art.
Yes, indeed. He has to be able to shape it well, but also in the style the wearer is looking for. Some people can tell him what style they want, but I don't really know anything about fashion so he had to make it for my specific style. Excellent work.
Raul a truly cowboy!
He nicely wears his perfect hat, none the less he created a nice work of art for the gentleman love the color, and style they choose for his hat.
Yes indeed, his passion is what made me want to buy from him.
Raul created you a unique looking hat. Hats off to that craftsman!
Yes indeed, I got a hat guy for life.
Texas is freaking great, love the vibes there, beautiful af🤩
Hoping one day i'll get there❤
I hope you get there too. Let me know when you're in the states and I'll show you around Texas.
Beautiful - what an artist!!!
Definitely. Have you had a hat shaped for you?
Just what I needed for our Texas trip🤠
Get yourself one!! A Cowboy is nothing more than a modern (or closer to modern) horse warrior.
Great video! You can see that young fella loves his job
Yes, he sure does. And it show through in his work, I love my hat.
i have a wool hat also but mine is not shaped by Raul, i feel sad about that!
We'll take yours to him next time.
❤
Your hat is beautiful Thuy!
We should take you back to her store to get you the color you like.
I love my Great State of Texas
I sure do too
This iss so aâmzing ❤😊
Thank you, do you want to get one now?
It is SOO cool
So cool
It’s beautiful
it's great
Very nice video. I really enjoyed watching it. What's the name of this store?
This was a temporary store at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, but the permanent store is called Sombrero Brands Cowboy's Finest.
I hope we can wear hat like this in China😂,im a rdr2 player,i cant go2 Texas,but i can buy a bullhide brand hat online😋
Good luck finding the real one, but you have a lot of choices on rdr2. I just played that all day, lol. Good stuff.
What kind of hat did Wyatt herb have? I’ve been looking for one
The hats they wore in those days were different than the cowboy hats we wear today. A lot of people in the old west wore bowlers. From the pictures I just looked up he had a round crown with a flat top, and a short, flat brim. Idk the name of that style.
That style is usually called the 'Gambler.'
@@brandonprice7943 great info, thanks for clearing that up.
DUDE i forgot my hat in Vietnam
I know, I realized shortly after you left, guess you gotta come back again.
Do you have the address to this location?
This is at the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, but the main location of Sombrero Brands is 6055 Highway 105, Brenham, Texas. I hope you get yourself one.
Love that hat, very nice colour. Is the crown shape called the "minnick"? I like the crown style and the brim with the pencil crease...looks sharp!
Thank you, I feel sharp. While he was shaping he said he was doing a mix of the Cattleman and the Gus. I just looked up the minnick and it looks similar too, but maybe he didn't want to give me too much info or maybe it just looks that way since he put the Ft. Worth Mule Kick in the front.
@@josephlearnstheworld I was wondering about that too, it does have a bit of the gus crown, it sure looks good, pecan has to be one of the nicest colours.
@@blackbikerboots123 thank you, it feels so good to wear and the color goes with basically everything I own.
Excellent thanks
Thank you very much, do you wear a cowboy hat?
That's a great cowboy hat.
Thanks so much, you should get one too!
So beautiful, amazing
Thank you very much.
Not all cowboy hats are 10 gallon hats. That’s a specific style of hat.
Colloquially it refers to the style of hat shaped in this video, the style of hat made famous by the John B. Stetson company. But I'm curious to known what you would call a ten gallon hat.
@@josephlearnstheworld hoss from Bonanza wore a ten gallon hat.
What is this store called?
Raul worked for Sobrero Brands Cowboy's Finest. It's in or around Ft. Worth.
This is incredible work.
He's an amazing craftsman.
Thanks for sharing this great work, "saludos" from Mexico!
Muchas Gracias, Where do you live in Mexico?
Family owned store=Coker’s
Is this a store near you?
@@josephlearnstheworld it was. A long time ago. My ex bought his first hat at Cokers. I moved away for a bit and they were gone when I came back. Don't know what happened. There was a western wear store owned by a local family also. Owner got lost in meth in the 80s and burned down the store for insurance and got caught. No more store.
When my ex bought his hat beaver felts went for $10 an X. So a 4x hat was $40.
Oh, and by the mid 80s Cokers was one of only 10 authorized custom Stetson hat makers in the world.
@@SaucyWench88 wow, that's a crazy story, pretty sad. Where are you located?
@@josephlearnstheworld Cleburne, just south of Ft Worth.
Wowza, what passion!
Great hat❤
Thank you sir
Smart kid. Great vidéo. 👍👍👍
He sure is!!
so cool🎉
Thanks, I'm glad you like it
Thanks for sharing. That’s very cool. How much is a hat like that with that kind of fitting service.
I got the lowest quality material and it was $175, I tipped him on top of it. The hat is fantastic and technically the service is free, but obviously you gotta tip for that. If you're looking for a better material you can get a hat from $350-$1000+ but for a first hat I love mine. Had it just over a year and it's time to get him to shape it again. The second shaping should only take 5-10 min since it's just getting it back to how he did it originally.
hay qua
Thank you, do you wear any kind of hat?
Just wondering.... do you give a tip to the shaper when buying a new, shaped, hat?
I did, but I also took up nearly his entire morning for filming so I tried to give as much as I could. But I think normally the whole process would only take 20-30 minutes. I'd still recommend a tip if you can.
@@josephlearnstheworld thanks. I normally do tip; but sometimes it seems to make people uncomfortable if I ask. When asked on a forum recently, it was suggested that stores don't allow tips. I want to do what's right.
@@advnturer69 I agree, and since it was my first go I figured I'd do it. And now I'll always do it, Raul is now my hat shaper for life.
As a Californian I’d prefer western instead of hipster 1000%
Good to hear, partner! What part of Cali are you from?

Buy a microphone for your interviews
That's a great suggestion. After this video was produced I was able to buy one. Still slowly getting equipment as this is completely self funded.
Wool?! cmon man! Thats embarrassing
You can feel embarrassed, but I don't since I wasn't even expecting to buy a hat and I got the best I could afford.
What material is your hat made of?
