Don't even worry about the Porsche. All of your projects are amazing. Jump back and forth as you get parts and time This aero car will be a great build!
It’s going to be epic!
Agreed! The Porsche will always be there, and the world is full of them; there is no need to hurry for the sake of historic preservation. It's not that car anyway.
Man……..this is mad.! 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
@@OldWhitebelly Gives me more time to save up to buy it from Dom when it's finished anyway 🤣

Take a look at the Americans J lainos collection of aero engines beasts...
Just as TallyHo sets sail this project comes along.
So awesome!!! This will be a long term labor of love. And we will watch it happen!
Been watching Croker vs. Rover for 2 yrs now, so don't worry about the time span!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
As you say speak to Ivan Dutton, who has already trodden this route with his 10.5 litre Hall-Scott engined car? Very helpful man.
Fantastic. 👌🏾
Only one thing concerning me; I'm 60. I really, *really* hope I get to see this going up Prescott before I keel over! 😁
I was thinking just the same thing…………but I’m 74 🫣 15:27

Congratulations Dom. Just watched the video - looks like a very good start - don't be scared to throw some of it away and on a technical note, the back axle ratio is going to be very important, so check what it is and start getting a crown, wheel and pinion made as it takes a very long time. Look forward to welcoming you to the Shed soon. And thanks for the mention. Ivan
When I started at LMB in Belgium, they had just finished a home grown Minerva. The original sleeve valve smoke generator engine was shot, so they built a Liberty V12 from parts left over from the first war. I wasn't cheap, but it was absolutely brutal. They made quite a few engines so there must be another being used as a door stop somewhere.
Hi Dom, a bit of a long shot but last weekend I was at Old Warden aerodrome to see the shuttleworth collection, one thing that I did notice was quite a few first world war aero engines in the sheds, maybe they might be interested in parting with one, it could be good media coverage for both of you, good luck, I love the channel.
Best of luck Dom, finding an inline, pre 1918 engine will be pretty tough, as most aero engines were either radial or rotary units and it wasn't until the BE2 fighter bomber that inlines became popular and we're made by Rolls Royce (very expensive) and the German equivalent, Daimler Benz (as rare as hens teeth due to the scrapping of WW1 German aircraft. Maybe, if you can find one, a very early Gypsy Major 6 cylinder inline engine may be your best bet. It was used extensively by the De Havilland Aircraft Co almost from their inception and delivered good reliable horsepower in all their variants. Only problem was that they were mounted inverted which would require some massive conversion work to turn it cylinders up! The torque from most aero engines means that you could get away with a two or three speed gearbox, possibly one out of a boat and it would come with a reverse gear for when you have to get out of the Armco after the rest brakes fail! 🤣🤣🤣
while much later and mid engined, the Stanton Crop Duster Special used an inverted 4 cylinder De Havilland engine from a Tiger Moth, some of the engine solutions may apply, this car is still running and was at Goodwood in 2009, but I think a six cylinder would work well visually with the Rochet's long wheelbase and to my ear Ranalah Rochet sounds more period than Ranalah Rocket czcams.com/video/75fQR2qp2Xo/video.html
@@mumbles2000there is a Tiger Moth powered Dellage still competing today :)
Ranalah roquette 🚀
Yes it’s the perfect name!
I'm heading to Donington Park this Sunday, hoping to see some of these Edwardians. Hopefully one day I will see your car there too 😊
I hope so too!
Suggest a lorry/bus gearbox in order to handle 200hp. I have a barn full of old aero engines - but none quite that early. The original Napier Lion - an excellent engine, came out in 1917, but was developed through to 1930..... Not easy to find, but the later ones were very pretty robust and reliable. They started at 450bhp, and ended-up at 600-1,350bhp The really ideal engine would be a Wolseley Viper V8 - a 200bhp, direct-drive version of the Hispano Suiza 8b geared-drive engine. However - none of these engines are easy to find - so you may be best advised to look again at the OX5.
Congratulations Dom, on securing the foundation for your dream project! These things do not happen by chance, but by following your heart and taking the first step. The stars will align and it will gradually evolve.
Great that you've managed to get a rolling chassis. Good luck with the project, and I do like the sound of the "Ranalah Rocket", sounds like a proper vintage race-car name.
Love it. "Before you start!' Lol!
Haha I didn’t mean it in a rude way!
Good luck with the aero engined car Dom, you’ve already nailed the name. I’m exited for you and very much look forward to your new adventure, can’t wait!
You have the colour scheme already. Yellow bonnet, black wings, perfect.
Here's an angle for you Mate! 😎Since it has an engine, can you find another one & do a twin engine configuration? Inline 8 or lay them over for a V & you could connect them with a chain drive if they're facing forward or turn one around & connect them with two gears, that would get both exhaust's on the outside.
Hiya Dom totally awesome and made up 4 ya my friend such a awesome car
I must confess that I've never heard of your car before. I thought a Donnet was such a obscure French car from that era around Ww1. Looking forward to this project and can appreciate it will take a long time to build, liking the sound of the Ranalah Rocket too. Great video as always keep up the outstanding work ❤
My "26" Model T Ford speedster is not of the caliber your car will be when you're finished, but it's as close as my budget will ever allow me to get to an Edwardian car. Like you I started with just a chassis and big dreams. I fell in love with the Edwardians about 5 years ago and I knew I had to try my best. Ivan will get you through it. Cheers from a shed in Iowa
What you need now is a Liberty L12 aero engine. These date from the Great War, and were designed and built in the US.
Being only 27 litres, and fairly light and compact, I think that it would fit the bill.
A land speed record car, called the White Triplex, was constructed around 100 years ago, with THREE of these engines!
Hispano-Suiza 8 engine
@@cmk5791 I saw an original hs with a 4cyl half of the 8 cyl aero engine. epic car
The Marc birkigt Hispano v8’s are very hard to find these days.
The Liberty is pretty big, I don't think it will fit.
The Liberty V12s are the playthings of people who heat their Boathouses with soiled ten pound notes to keep their Mahogany Dual Cockpit Runabouts warm in the winter.
Perhaps he could sell his house, all his tools, cars, and motorbikes, plus rent out some of his clothes on days where he isn't wearing them to get his hands on a good Liberty and some spares.
The good ones of those things are eye-wateringly, BRUTALLY expensive these days, which is a shame, because it would be A FANTASTIC choice
I am an avid Chitty fan. May you succeed in this venture. I look forward to following your progress Dom. Vehichle electrics are my speciality. I just wish I had the room you have for this project to do one myself.
Ranala Rocket ,,R R...YES!❤❤❤
I think this is one of the most exciting new mechanical projects on CZcams, Allen Millyard level! And I get the replica thing, it's like your 356; for tens (or hundreds) of thousands less you could be driving something that 99% of people wouldn't know was any different from the Stuttgart original...but you would.
This is also a dream of mine for hillcliming in the VSCC! Ranalah rocket is extremely fitting, my favorite VSCC car is the cyclekart 'Lil Miss bacfire' all stretched out and low to the ground, beautiful. I so cant wait to see your progress on this one
Very cool project. I'm building a hot rod myself, and this is similar in some ways, but keeping to parts and stuff made pre 1918 sure is a challenge!
Hey Dom...... For me ....any of your content is good to see....your Journey is always interesting to watch and I cant wait for each video......each project is individual and good to see progress....Porsche, Bikes, Pedal Cars, Ranalah's.....all good....thanks for all the hard work!
Congratulations Dom, looks like a great start. I’m sure you will figure out the engine, but might I suggest you talk to Jobie Carter about a truck transmission from the era you are looking at. They would likely be strong enough to take the torque of any aero engine you end up with, if you can find one light enough. He might have some good ideas what to look for and maybe some contacts to talk to. Cheers from Canada. Tim
I will bet that your Edwardian club will be full of enthusiastic members who will love to share their passion for these old racers. I suspect more than a few of them will have part "stashes" and might be able to assist with some of the items you will need.
That's a great start for what you want to build. Grab your Hemmings subscription. Pre 16, get in touch with those (old, Like me!) guys , collect everything you can, save it all. Still lots of early stuff here in USA. Plan a trip to Hershey PA. Oct., KEEP at it,,,,DUBS
Well now the journey begins. There is an engine out there just waiting for you. Look forward to its regeneration.
I agree fully with your purchase decision Dom; firstly you got the intro and the thumbs up from fellow knowledgeable enthusiasts on Edwardians, and secondly you fell in love with the looks of the (potential) beast and this is SO important as a future driving force. So in a nutshell, you did correctly in securing this rolling chassis and don't eat yourself up about the decision, you will get used to it very, very shortly and start smiling to yourself about it! Sometimes you just HAVE to snap these things up whilst they are on offer. Now you only need a straight eight or a V12 to go in it, but will one fit length wise?? !!
Looking forward to the next few years..good luck Dom
Of course it's got to be the 'Ranalah Rocket'...I love having lots of projects on the go at once....I totally get it Dom.
I think an early French aero engine would be most fitting for the chassis and likely possible.. best of luck
Amazing Dom….congratulations…living the dream and we are along for the ride…..loving it….
Nothing ventured NOTHING GAINED!! Wonderful project- Go for it you've the skills and passion, Job done.
Reach out to Jay Leno perhaps .. he has a love of turn of the century vehicles, and reproduces old parts I believe, also look for an Australian guy Rod Hatfield and his home built "special "
Ivan Dutton is your man. I have been watching his channel for a long time. He's a Genius. He will guide you and won't let you down. Best of luck.
Great job securing the chassis, now the fun and games begin finding all the other parts. Stumbled on this page on f/book (aero - engine race cars , boats , bikes ,ect might have some contacts. Good luck.
The Ranalah Rocket 🚀 with the number of cylinders of the engine after it would be cool Dom 😎
I came here for the Porsche rebuild.
I’ve stayed for everything else you mad boys have done.
I never even heard of an Aero-Engine, yet here I am, looking forward to this build.
Curses 😆
You could try asking The Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford airfield to help you source an engine. Good luck👍
Power to you.back in the late 70s airly 80s when i was a kid I used to look at these type of cars in glossy books and amagin racing them.would love the challenge of driving.proper cars for me.
Those bicycle frames especially one to the side of the car was fantastically unique!! You truly found a beautiful base for your project from someone who clearly cared about what they had!
As neat as all your other projects are, I think I am more excited about this than anything else you have done. I've always liked the idea of an early single seat "racer". I'm quite looking forward to see the progression of this into a "Special". 👍👍
I’m excited. No mater what you’re working on. Bring on the aero baby!
What a Score. Going to look great when it's done....
Looking forward to this adventure!!! Life is highways and byways 😉
Got to be a boattail body, man I envy you what a thing.
Follow your heart in this, and everything you pursue. It will happen.
If anyone can do it you certainly can.
Have to say like your choice of name, all of the body work has to be wheeled to
Ofcourse! Thank you
This is amazing Dom. The SF Edge is my absolute favourite Goodwood race at any of the events and the idea to take inspiration from Ranalah coach building is perfect for your car.
Hi Dom , looking forward to the build mate , I'm sure the parts will come in once people get wind of hour project.
Good luck mate .regards Franko
Fantastic to follow your dream...looking forward to the build...
This is bold! Amazing.
This one certainly IS a project.
I’ve painted one or two of them ole gals, and they’re so damn fiddly. But I’ll try and find the geezas number who we done the work for.
Last time I was in his place he had 4 different motors on the go.
It may be a shot in the dark, or flicking a light switch, don’t know. But I’ll see if I can help u out 👍
Wow, a brilliant start on your project journey 👏 congratulations. I have a 1930 Ford model A that i drive daily....not as early, or as rare....but definitely lots of fun! Especially to park in lidl car park for the shopping! 😊
Awesome project more than validates selling your toys ..you are the box of chocolates channel 👍👍👍
Im 74 this year. Will i live long enough to see the end product. Who knows, but i will wait and see
If i dont hey ho, i will watch and support you on the way. Love the channel honest and down to earth. You pair are a force to be tecond with. Thanks
I'm 73 & 3 days ago I made the first test run in my land speed record streamliner that is capable of running over 500mph. Old is a state of mind I refuse to get in to.
Great to hear you are beginning your Edwardian racer project. I was at Shelsley Walsh (the world's oldest motorsport track) today (VSCC meeting), watching some of these vintage beasts attack the hill.
Excellent presentation to camera Dom. You’ve convinced me to follow this one with great interest. Can’t wait to see you getting your hands dirty (dirtier 😀)!
Hispano Suiza out of a Spad/S.E.5a, around 200hp and do the same bulbs on the hood to accomodate the heads would be pretty brutal, everyone would know what it was before you ever fire it up :D
It has to be the Ranalah Racing, I love it - thanks Dom for adding this to you projects and I know it will be a great build!
Dom ,
You have moved from safe (the bus) to slightly dangerous (the bike) to a Completely Dangerous ride. Oh Well Carry On !
Cheers From California 😎
Can't wait to see u work on that the rocket name sounds good I think a lot of ur questions will be answered when u find the parts that look and feel right wish u all the best on it
At the risk of sounding like a yes man Yes! Yes! Yes! 😂😂Ranalah Rocket [RR] can't wait to see it on that hill. You could start a crowd funder with a ride up the hill being one of the rewards !!
Yes but don't use the RR as a symbol coz Rolls Royce's lawyers will be on it like a ton of bricks.
The idea of a crowd funder sounds like a good move.
@@Qspecialman Definitely!!! I hereby book the first ride!
Greetings! Just found your page. I love aero engined cars as well and maybe I'll be able to build one some day. Anyway, terrific start to your project! The right engine will find you. Maybe an OX-5, maybe something else. I wonder if Renault or another French manufacturer built aero engines at that time. The other possibility could be a Hispano - Suiza V8. Transmission choices could be from large buses or heavy-duty commercial trucks.
Have you thought of checking aviation museums, there are loads of small ones around that have sheds full of engines. You never know they might have what you want.
This has been a life long dream of mine also, while I’m still dreaming I get to live it vicariously through you Dom.
All of your content is of the upmost quality and interest to all members of the car fancy.
Really very happy for you and couldn’t be happening to a more deserving gent.
Bravo 👏
Wonderful. Can't wait to follow your progress on it.
Good luck Dom . . . great project.
This is so exciting 😮l can’t wait for your next video on this project the best of luck to you sir you go for it 👍👏👏
I'm hoping and praying there's a Wolsley Viper or Hispano Suiza 8 out there with your name on it 😉
Love your style - "Some of these pre 1918 engines are far too common, let's find something even rarer" 😂My first thought was to find something French, but it seems an awful lot of engines originating from that country were either radial (rotating crankshaft) or rotary (stationary crank, not Wankel) which present significant issues, when fitting to a car! Renault were making inline engines, so that could be an option.
She’s a thing of beauty! Really excited for you :D
Nice one Dom....wishing you all the luck in getting it on the road.
Thanks 👍
Congratulations on finding the chassis to be honest it’s your project you build it the way you want to… don’t worry about what people say or think ..
1912?
The log book probably went down with the Titanic Dom.
Fantastic project. Love it.
Well done dom. the smile on your face says it all. Build the car you want it’s a once 0:11 in a life time it’s your dream my friend and ours to enjoy with you. ⭐️. And thanks for sharing your dream 👍. Good luck buddy
Congratulations, Dom!🎉
Ranalah Rocket sounds great!
Such an ambitious and cool project. Although, given that it's apready going to be quite the challenge, I'd probably be opting for the easier engine choice
Golly Dom, I am so so happy to hear you have found your pre 1916 chassis. I am also so enamoured by these modern day 'Whacky Racers' lol and cannot wait to see your version invited to take part in a race. Will be folowing every step of the way you can be sure.....and any other projects will be definitely in my remitt. Basically BRILLIANT stuff. 😃
Love watching all the projects you and John (Wendy also) are doing.👍👍
Here in the States, it likely would have been called the Ranalah Special, but Ranalah Rocket sounds awesome. And calling it a Ranalah could not possibly be more authentic!
Ranalah special works!
Special is boring, ‘Ranalah Rochet’ (said like rocket) sign-written on the side is perfect, it’s quirky enough that people will ask about it, and it’s easily explainable, it’s in the same grain as triton, norvin, bitsa. Rolls off the tongue of the goodwood announcers, It’s a good play on words, I’d go with that.
Surely, if you name it “The Ranalah Rocket” you can claim a bit of tax relief as it is advertising your business! 😉
@@samjl4yes that sounds really good, and as you say people will be intrigued to ask why it’s spelt that way.
I think that you ought to focus on the engine which it already has. It looks as though it is probably a very interesting engine in its own right. Wouldn't it be a shame to separate the original engine from the chassis? Perhaps there are good reasons for breaking this up but I would have thought that originality counts for a lot. You use the term Edwardian loosely, most Edwardian, i.e. pre-1910, aero engines would be very rare, limited hours museum specimens. Most of the aero-engined cars which inspire you would have benefitted from the vast amount of war-surplus stock sold off at scrap metal rates after 1919 (and therefore are strictly Georgian). That said, good luck with this one, I'm sure it will be an interesting project to follow.
You need the engine to light your heart and passion too. Whatever you choose will be a LOT of work, so make it properly passionate!
Peter Jackson, the famous film director from New Zealand has the biggest collection of WW1 aircraft and engines etc in the world including never used aircraft engines still in their original packing crates!
It might be worth reaching out to him...
Yes, yes, yes!!! This is going to be the best thing you have ever done. Right with you for this journey.
Hey up mate this is awesome didn't know you were into car's as I've only watched your rannal building stuff, really looking forward to some videos
So pleased for you! That's a great looking Chasis! This is going to be an immense series!
As if we should dictate which project you should do… tssk. Dom, thanks for all the excellent free content 😅
Succes, great challenge.
"Front brakes? Where we're going we don't need front brakes!"
Just found your channel Dom. I’m going to have to do a lot of binge watching…🎉🎉🎉
Hope you enjoy!
You will have to find an engine that makes you happy and enjoy working with . Iam looking forward to the new adventure
That's the plan!
Just hearing the excitement in your voice and laying out the road ahead - I am all in. Lots to learn.
Ooh you lucky lucky bugger,my absolute dream car to build an aero engined car you will not regret this build.crack on sir
