I always inspire you! I also think Bob Dylan is a great singer and one of his songs from Slow Train Coming would be in my top 10 list. I am sad there were no Beatles, not even Ringo! 😃
What a challenging list to make. There's "pretty" voices and then there's voices of substance. I appreciate both. Without too much thought... 10. Back to Black. Amy Winehouse 9. Lay Lady Lay. Robert Zimmerman 8. Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes. Paul Simon (and backing vocalists) 7. You Don't Know Me. Ray Charles & Diana Krall 6. Summertime. Big Brother and the Holding Company (Joplin) 5. Don't Let It Bring You Down. Neil Young 4. Today. Jefferson Airplane (Balin, Slick, Kantner) 3. Brass In Pocket. Pretenders (Hynde) 2. Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology). Marvin Gaye 1. Bridge Over Troubled Water Simon & Garfunkel (Garfunkel)
Hi Glen, Family another band that doesn’t get any love in the VC. 😅. Picking just three of their songs Burlesque, Weaver’s Answer and Drowned In Wine, nobody sings like Roger Chapman!
Great list. Off the top of my head, David Bowie: Wild Is The Wind Bryan Ferry: Zamba Traffic: John Barleycorn Must Die Marianne Faithful : Broken English Beatles: A Day In Thhe Life
Nice. Didn't expect to see Mountain. I could even pick a Leslie West vocal, voice like a chainsaw but he knew how to use it. For The Band I'd pick Richard Manuel and Rockin' Chair, always gives me goosebumps. Nothing to argue with Robert Plant, could be many songs though. And for Gregg it's Melissa for me.
I'd have some other songs in my top ten but my number one spot would also be Rick Danko singing It Makes No Difference. I still get chills listening to that.
Love your King Crimson and Ray songs! Here are 5 big favourite performances: Van Der Graaf Generator - Man-Erg Blind Willie Johnson - Nobody's Fault but Mine Palace Music - Work hard/Play hard Marianne Faithfull - So Sad The Doors - The Soft Parade
Great list Glen. Agree with it all. I might add something from Eva Cassidy. Her interpretation of Over the Rainbow perhaps. One of many great vocals from her.
Hi Glen!!! well done and cool list, i think you're almost right, 9 out of ten is not bad, because one of your choices (BD) shouldn't be here, lol..... cheers and be well
In a non-ranked reactionary order, bordering on my personal favorites without being my personal favorites, here are a few MALE vocalists from studio recordings in the rock/pop idiom: Jim Morrison: Light My Fire; Roger Daltrey: Love Reign Over Me; Elvis Presley: In The Ghetto; Russel Mael: This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us; Buddy Holly: True Love Ways; Jerry Garcia: Ripple; Paul McCartney: Yesterday; John Lennon: Just Like Starting Over: John Fogerty: Have You Ever Seen The Rain?; Peppi Marchello: Songwriter. (top song, top singer/songwriter, I'm leaving the best for last on this list)
She’s Gone by Hall & Oates is underrated, It Makes No Difference by the Band is an excellent choice. My choice for favourite vocals is Paul McCartney singing Golden Slumbers followed very closely by Roy Orbison’s Crying.
Wow, you've picked a big topic here. Top ten? Seriously? How about a Top Thousand? Keep this theme running. There's so many hours of mileage on this one. Mountain is one of those great bands who have almost disappeared, but the vocals on 'Theme from an Imaginary Western' and 'Nantucket Sleigh Ride' are indeed beautiful, as are Greg Lake's vocals on 'Epitaph.' I'm not a big Eagles fan beyond 'Desperate' and the 'Hotel California' lead track, but Don Henley is an incredible composer and singer. His solo work dwarfs his Eagles work. 'Ghost,' about finding Stevie Nicks naked in his bedroom, is a masterpiece, as is 'Dammit, Rose,' about a friend committing suicide. Great songs, great lyrics, great vocals. If anyone's doubts Janis Joplin's genius - and no-one in their right minds should - just listen to her version of 'Me and Bobby McGhee' versus Kris Kristofferson's version, versus Gordon Lightfoot's version. Not in the same universe, never mind ballpark. At last - I can praise Robert Plant. He is a stunning vocalist on every song he touches. He is what made Led Zeppelin the massively overrated band it is. Without him it would have been an ultra-blues-based train wreck. And yeah, Jimmy Page knows his way around a guitar in a masterly way. Bob Dylan - I nominate 'Senor' and 'One more cup of coffee.' That catch in his voice is magnificent. He doesn't have an operatic voice, but that catch in his voice trumps all. And can we have a shout out here for Neil Young on any of his protest songs: 'Ohio,' 'Southern Man,' and 'Cortez the Killer.' Rips you to pieces.
And will autocorrect please stop auto-correcting stuff? I'm sick and tired (translated to "dick and tired") of Uriah Heep becoming "Irish Hero," and other such bullshit. You really would think that CZcams, which has a massive content of music shows, would have heard of a few of the bands and artists that grace its pages. Every comment I make, I have to correct at least one sentence in every paragraph - and then I miss a few glaring errors, not made by me but by autocorrect. So annoying! Jethro Tull really isn't "Metro Full," or am I missing something? And why does CZcams insist on turning my commas into periods? They are at the opposite ends of the keyboards. I really don't type a period when I mean a comma. Blah!
@@GlenKellawayfromthebasement I have a lot of albums that, quite frankly, have grating vocals but great instrumentation. Rush, Zeppelin, Yes, Jeff Beck Group (I can't stand Rod Stewart's voice). I'm sure there's more...

Glen, failure to include Zappa's "Fifty-Fifty" is a fail. Why, just because Ricky's voice is kaput? 🤪
