    I just picked up the Sony HXR-NX80 and I absolutely love it. It has everything I need over the previous Sony FDR-AX700 that I upgraded from.

    Good review, I own an FDR AX700 as I did not want the top handle and needed the top shoe for either microphones or lights. Using a HLG profile with some increased sharpening, I barely have to touch it in post, mainly bitrate reduction to get the size down.

    I went for the NX80 and for me it was a natural step from my AX100 especially with the sound handle and improved auto focus. Would love a 4K 50p upgrade but somehow don’t think it’s going to happen. This winter’s project is to learn about HDR workflow.

    Hi Carl, I fully agree with this quick review of 5 pros about the Z90. I own it's predecessor, the X70 with 4k upgrade, and yes, the image quality is just incredible for such a small camera. I met some weeks ago a cameraman working for a TV-channel, he had a big camera, and he told me that in some circumstances, the small X70 can produce as nice image as his big (but a bit old) camera, or even better images... So these little cameras (z90 and x70) are really good for basic reportages or events, and complete and match very well, as 2nd camera, with the z150 or z190 or other Sonys ! My next purchase will probably be this Z90. It would be great if it could record 4:2:2 10 bit in real 4K...

    Slightly off topic - why doesn't Panasonic have a prosumer "fat handycam" style model in its lineup? I used to have a Panasonic DVC-30 that was this kind of body and it was perfect for me. Even Canon has several models in this style. Why would Panasonic miss out on this market?

    Good review, I own an FDR AX700 as I don't want the top handle and prefer to be able to use a Rode mike directly on top. Once you are used to it you get high quality with very few errors. Both 1080 @ 60 and 4k @ 30 are very good and with a tweaked pp10 profile with HLG, some sharpening and a few others, the only reason why I need to do post work is to get the file size down. Nothing to chase after yet until 4k @ 60 becomes available at a reasonable price. I have just about got everything working properly on a dji Pocket Osmo and I can use it where a bigger camera is not the best choice and the output can be matched without colour grading with the Sony output.

      @ProAVTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Carlos
      Glad to hear you’re happy with your NX80 purchase.
      Personally I’m not certain either of those cameras are perfect for your exact situation to be honest. The CX350 looks to be a great camera, great in low light, but the autofocus is contrast based so will probably not be as good as you are used to with the NX80. On the other hand the Z190 won’t have the low light as it has smaller sensors. Really you want the autofocus performance and low light in one camera. Have you looked at the Sony z280 or canon XF705 / XF405 ?
      Carl

      Now the new NX80 is great but if I wanted 3 rings to have better control. PXW Z280 and XF705 are incredible but it's cost is high for my chances.

    Overall I love this camera. However, I've had problems with video noise when shooting low light or mixed light with noise in the dark areas. I've had this problem in both auto and manual mode. Any tips on avoiding noise?

    • @jazzy2577
      @jazzy2577 Před 4 lety

      Are you comparing it to another camera you've used?
      I have found a hint on dvinfo that does help the noise, but it comes at a price and that price varies based upon the lighting. " I adjusted my DETAIL settings to Type 1 and crispening to +1 to knock down some of the noise "enhancement" you get as the gain increases. In NLE, I sometimes will pull my midtones (gamma) downward until the contrast looks pleasing, and as you pull down midtones you also reduce noise a bit and get back some contrast you lose as gain increases."
      In my testing the image loses sharpness, almost looks out of focus. But the noise is controllable. I am still testing though, could still be my own error.

    • @VideoSpecialtiesLa
      @VideoSpecialtiesLa Před 4 lety +1

      @@jazzy2577 I've done video production full time since 1990 and owned a lot of cameras. My market has allowed for cameras costing $5000-$10000. The price of this camera is amazing for what you get. However, the noise under certain conditions and more difficulty in shooting manual are the two big negatives for me.
      I've found that you want to keep the gain limited to 3-6DB in low light conditions to avoid the noise. When working manually, I open the iris all the way then adjust the gain up and down as needed. If you are shooting full auto, go into the menu and limit the AGC to 3DB while adjusting the auto exposure limit to either darker or brighter for the type of conditions you will be shooting.
      Neat Video has a noise filter plugin for Premiere and other editors. It easily removes any noise from the NX80 footage without degrading the image. The plugin costs around $125. The same tool includes some amazing focus sharpening besides noise reduction. It has been well worth the money.
