    You do a great job with these, Carl! Just a quick note; the lens is a 30.3mm to 515mm *full frame* equivalent, not Super35mm. It's a small distinction, but an important one as many camera users are familiar with APS-C sized sensors (which is very similar and often interchanged with S35) and that has a bit of a crop compared to full frame.
    I can't wait to see your upcoming review of Canon's XF-705 and then the resulting comparison between it and this one. I know you are sponsored so hopefully you can keep things unbiased and fair - but these are the most interesting cameras to be available in this space in a long time and you do such a good job with being thorough. Thanks again.

    Hello, I would like to ask you a question: I shoot the videos of my channel with a Canon M50 camera (mirrorless) very modestly. Thinking of improving and making the leap to a camcorder, I want to make sure that a camcorder would really be better. It is advisable? Would it make a lot of difference? What video camera do you use and recommend?

    HELLO PRO! I just got my Sony PMW-EX1R and shot some footage! My question is: I used an SXS Adapter to transfer my video mp4 files to my computer! The problem is the Palmcorder puts each take in a separate folder making, batch capturing impossible! Besides using the USB out in Media Mode, can I use the Fire Wire IDEE Output to do the same? Will Adobe Premiere recognize it and control it like it does with a Mini DV Cam? Is there an advantage of using a USB vs a Fire Wire IDEE?

    Compared to Sony Pmw200 how does it preform in low light?
    Is the lens f1.9 constant throughout the zoom range?

    Great Video! Just got this camera but there is 1 thing I cannot figure out. The Gain! It does not change when I switch between the 3 tabes (L,M,H) and even Turbo Gain. On the Camera LCD Display there is a little A next to the Gain, im assuming its Auto Gain and it def is bc when I play with the Aperture it changes. How do I turn off auto gain and have full control of it ?

    YES !!! thank you Carl. i am loving mine - haven’t had time to try the usb transfer port yet or the MI connections yet - hoping to soon. slog3 rocks not as happy with the HDR but i haven’t had time to play with it yet. xqd cards via adapters give me full xavc-i 60fps and 24 at SQ 60fps with absolutely no issues. variable nd is just right when you want to maintain a shallow dof - and the zoom in UHD is more than enough. the audio in is good for interviews and catching ambient sound on a separate track. you’re right about the record buttons while on a tripod - i found the answer to be the sony remote clipped onto the tripod arm - also - i’ve been using my atomos inferno to monitor slog3 - outside it’s the safest method to make sure you’re getting the shot you want - in addition to watching your histogram.

      This camera has several advantages over the FS5, but the main one is the 17x zoom lens with f1.9 across the entire zoom range. No lens with that kind of range or speed exists for the Super35mm format.

      Have you used your USB transfer yet? In having received my Shogun Inferno I will now be recording OFF-Camera most of the time, I love the fact the USB port will power even a Spindle USB drive, but when transferring to an EVO Pro SSD that normally would write say 100Gb of data in less than 10 minutes from a PC - it took the Camera 39 mins for one card and about 30 for another to move a total of 136Gb of data.
      I wondered if it might be because I am reading off MEAD adapted SD cards. So wondering if you have SxS and transferring is significantly faster due to the speed these are capable of...

      @jaspal singh hiya jaspal - sorry only now seeing your comment! i chose the z280 for a high quality 4K broadcast ready / but portable with no need to carry my lenses et al around with me while traveling. when i'm not shooting on the z280 - i shoot on the red epic 8k - with zeiss milvus glass. so far i've shot using the z280 in Poland, Germany, France, UK and Israel - and it has performed without issue. the camera fills a sweet spot and yes it doesn't have the lens flexibility of the FS range - but at f1.9 constant with variable nd and 4K at 60fps - it covers 90% of what i need. take care!

      @simongentry Před 5 lety

      @@lklmmedia4715 hiya! your transfer speeds will greatly depend on BOTH your backup media as well as the cards you're using in camera. i've used the usb to transfer a couple of times with no issues - which works well when you're between gigs and need to hand off media to a client while on the move. personally i have been using xqd cards with the adapters - then use an adapter with usb-c to my laptop while on location - using the sony raw viewer software to review and export / download the files. i am sure there are lots of ways to back your data up - including using the network capabilities built in to the z280! all the best.

    Nice one again Carl. Well done! Saw this camera in Dubai and thought that between this and the other new Sony half inch 3 CCD jobby with the changeable lens (can't remember number). it was a hard choice. Luvvly Dubbly regardless. Looking at your footage, you obviously shot yourself on something else. To me it looks like nice thick colours, but the white balance seems a bit up you are getting into Spanish oranges, but that could be my age and old eyes. So Ignore, but it affected my reasoning, relating it to the Z280.
    Anyway, in the Gulf, one ALWAYS needs ND filters, so nice touch. But.... run and gun is a pig.. The ND slider is easier to slip on than slide off, so when off and you quickly bang the camera in to a tightish holdall the ND switch will flick on.. As luck will have it, you grab bag, rush inside and in rapid action to grab a few shots of some important subject on the move or passing interview and you wonder Why TF all your footage is dark and noisy.

The the new efficient HEVC H.265 codec is twice as efficient as H.264, allowing 10bit 4:2:2 onto inexpensive SD cards, also far superior dual pixel auto focus, optical image stabilisation, Canon Log, and live streaming. Apart from Sony's brilliant variable ND (which gives more benefits on a super 35mm sensor, allowing a wide aperture for minimal dof), I think the Canon might win.

    I do noticed a bit of green/purple chromatic aberration on the lens. Is this camera better at chroma key than Bayer pattern sensor cameras?

    • @SparkFosterFilms
      @SparkFosterFilms Před 5 lety +2

      Overall I'd say yes, this camera will pull a better chroma key - but it depends what you're comparing it to. The 10-bit 4:2:2 codec of this camera will pull a superior chroma key to 8-bit cameras like the Sony FS5 or Canon C300. If you're comparing it to another 10-bit 4:2:2 camera like the FS7, your guess is as good as mine. The chromatic aberrations you noticed are a feature of the Fujinon 17x zoom lens (they also appear in images from the PXW-X200 which has the same lens). However, as a PXW-X200 user I can tell you firsthand that it won't be an issue for green screen. That's assuming you are shooting your green screen in a studio with proper lighting, and the lens at wide, normal, or moderate telephoto focal length. The aberrations only appear at the far tele end of the lens, and only when the aperture is wide open, and even then they are typically only noticeable if there is a lot of backlight. These are not conditions you will generally need to worry about in a studio setting, so I don't consider them a big problem for chroma key personally.

      I got two of the BPU60 batts and typically both start out saying 140+ mins - I figure before I got them to around 27mins flat they went for around 100mins. (this was done twice for two different recordings.) So may have got an extra 20 mins out of them.
      I haven't tested the standard BPU30 - it is really only going to be used as a test and setup battery, not worth putting on a cam for any decent shoots.
      In terms of what the 100mins got was full time XAVC-L to MEAD/SD-128G-Sandisk-Extreme-Pro combo and Proxy output to 32Gb SD card - LCD brighness at max, LCD always out and using Viewfinder for 85% of the time. Zoom was about used about 50% of the time, then manual along with manual focus - subject was 2 Softball games in daylight.
      Zoom smoothness with the manual rings - comes down to Muscle twitch and finger placement, etc. but got to a point where I could make it seem seemless...via LANC and on-cam toggles, smooth as most other cams of similar ilk, suggest a LANC which can change speeds if you want more control...

    • @SparkFosterFilms
      @SparkFosterFilms Před 5 lety +2

      The advantage of the Z190 is the longer zoom range (25x vs only 17x on this camera) and the use of SD cards which are a LOT cheaper than the SxS cards this camera requires. The advantage of this camera is the larger 1/2" sensor and faster f1.9 lens, which means this camera will be better in low-light and will give you shallower depth of field for more cinematic looking images. This camera also has superior codecs (10-bit 4:2:2 which is a broadcast standard) and supports Slog3 for cinematic color grading. So overall the Z280 is a higher-end camera than the Z190 and is "better" overall, but it's also twice as expensive and the Z190 still has a few advantages that the Z280 doesn't have. Unless you are shooting for broadcasters that require a certain level of codec (e.g. broadcast television or Netflix) or unless you are shooting in low-light situations a lot, the Z280 probably isn't worth the extra money for you (don't forget that in addition to spending twice as much on the camera, you also have to buy SxS memory cards for this camera which are very expensive). The images from the two cameras should look nearly identical in proper lighting. The Z280 should look significantly better in low-light however. I would love to see a side-by-side comparison of these two cameras in lowlight but no one has shot one yet because these are so new. I'm sure it will be coming soon though.

I love it and am really glad i changed it. That said...I’ve started to look at the Canon C300 mark II, and am wondering if i should have gone with that one instead. Anyone have any thoughts??

    how would this stack against the Canon Xf 705? Cant wait to see a video comparing the two!

    • @SparkFosterFilms
      @SparkFosterFilms Před 5 lety +1

      Should be pretty similar. On one hand the XF705 has a 1" sensor vs 1/2" on the Z280. The larger sensor should help with shallower depth of field, and better low-light capability. BUT the Z280 has a superior lens that is f1.9 across the entire zoom range (!!!) and that will help tremendously with shallower depth of field and better lowlight capability. So I predict the two cameras will produce very similar images. Codecs are very similar on both too. I think a big determining factor will be whether or not you are already using Canon/Sony gear (e.g. C100 or FS5 or A7S) and want to match this camera to a b-camera. Shooting Slog3 on this and Slog3 on your b-camera (e.g. FS5) will help you match the two cameras in post. On the other hand you could shoot C-Log on the XF705 and match it to Canon cameras. Another determining factor will be whether you already have money invested in SxS cards (e.g. if you shoot on a Sony EX1, PMW-200, F3, F5, etc.) or CompactFlash cards (e.g. Canon XF300, C300). That may make one camera or the other more economically viable.

    • @SparkFosterFilms
      @SparkFosterFilms Před 5 lety

      Ah, but I forgot to mention that the XF705 features H.265 compression which SHOULD greatly reduce file sizes and help fit a lot more 4K 10bit 4:2:2 content onto each memory card. That COULD be a game-changer. But we need more tests and more info on how much computing power you will need to actually edit H.265 in an efficient manner. It looks good on paper but may not work well for real-world work with current computing technology. Because the more compression you have, the harder your machine needs to work to decode/encode the images.

      @PlacesToVisit Před 5 lety +1

      @@SparkFosterFilms It's more too it than comparing just the chip size since the Z280 has 3 chips. In theory, the Sony's should have less rolling shutter effects. Anti aliasing effects should also be less on the Sonys. Another edge that might be in Sony's favor is the real resolution. Still would be good to compare them and to make it more interesting, add the JVC GY-HC550 into the mix.

      @daltonrandall4348 Před 5 lety +2

      Spark & Foster Films Not only can you fit more on a memory card, but you don't need expensive ultra-fast media. The XF705 records 4K H.265 onto standard U3 SD cards (you don't even need UHS-II), which is ubiquitously available and extremely affordable. That could make the difference for a lot of people.

    Too bad the designers don't understand the importance of a decent viewfinder. It's nice to have the screen in controlled situations, but the rinky-dink VF is a disadvantage, especially for those of us who wear glasses. If only it was just a LITTLE bit larger. Would love to see the guts of this camera in an EX3 body.

    • @lklmmedia4715
      @lklmmedia4715 Před 5 lety

      The Problem I found with the VF was it's placement - I can imagine it is OK if roving and having the camera up to your face - but it is hard to use the VF when on a tripod as the moment you are Close to the back it means your tripod handle is sticking into your chest, and making it hard to maintain a comfortable posture.
      This is probably a typical response I guess though from someone used to using larger broadcast cameras where the VF is ALWAYS at the front and Left side of the cam - effectively where the LCD screen is on this one. I think I will 3D print a cover for the LCD screen to turn it into a VF!

    Ooh, half inch chips mean you're always having to work to get differential focus, as you had to with the original EX1.
    And such a form factor cries out for much more wideangle coverage at the expense of telephoto reach in my view. I know it makes for very short (real) focal lengths with all the problem associated, but wideangle converters? No thanks.
    Any thoughts on the image stabilisation on offer?

      The codes are the issue here - 600mbps at 422 4K 60p is a dealbreaker - that’s what a few minutes of recording on a card, and their XQD Format is properitery and super expensive, canon much better with 160mbps. Canon wins in terms of codec

    • @SparkFosterFilms
      @SparkFosterFilms Před 5 lety

      Actually, there are lower bitrate options for 4K on this camera. You don't need to shoot 600mbps. I am very glad they kept the SxS (not XQD) format on this camera. Many broadcasters have been using SxS for 10+ years and have many thousands of dollars invested in SxS memory and workflow. Sony is marketing this camera toward them.

    Carl - Just double posting this here (posted originally in your XAVC-I vs XAVC-L/S vid...I figured this may or may not help anyone considering this Unit if you happen to respond to my query below...
    I picked up my Z280 yesterday and have been giving it a bit of a burn in - and will try it in low light for a job tonight.
    I have opted to keep the costs down initially by using SD cards in the MEAD adapter, and this works for all Formats up to XAVC-L without a problem. However I note that when I go to XAVC Intra it fails within about 5 seconds of recording, throws a Media Full message and the alarm goes off on the camera. Further to this that Card then becomes unusable unless I format it - even though looking at it on a PC it is practically empty (128B Sandisk Extreme Pro - Genuine.) - Eventually it won't be an issue as I will mainly record via an Atomos Shogun Inferno when it arrives next week...
    The query is - I see on the specs of the Cam that the XAVC-I write speeds are up to 600Mbps - which translates to 75MBps - which is less than the SD cards support at up to 90Mbs write speed.
    I will try tonight at a rate/frequency of 25 rather than 50 in Record Mode to see if they still fail...But in your vid on XAVC Codecs you mention much higher rates for XAVC-I and L than the specs of the Cam do...and I had seen somewhere that in fact the Express34 cards (MEAD/SxS adaptors) - state that their Data rate is capable of 1.3Gbps - so does this mean Sony are Misquoting the DATA requirement of the CAM just to make sure that when you DON'T use their SxS cards you have no come back to them as they simply say NOT SUPPORTED!?!?

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 Před 5 lety

      Probably not - it simply means that the Mead adapter doesn't support that rate. It's designed to give UHS1 performance - I can't see anywhere where Sony advertise 1.3Gb/s which would equal about 160 MB/s. I think if you buy the XQD adapter that will work but Sony would need build a UHSII compatible adapter to get SD cards to work. Even though technically 600Mb/s is less than the speed stated on some fast UHS1 cards they are generally not sustained write speeds.

    • @lklmmedia4715
      @lklmmedia4715 Před 5 lety

      @@mondotv4216 Yeah good point, I did consider it might be the MEAD - but seems a bit odd an adaptor that CAN have the throughput at one end of the bus is then restricted.
      I mentioned on another post that this is unfortunately a bit of a standard Sony Playbook - SxS cards are un-affordable, but necessary, and to drive the need to still buy their product you can get the MEAD and realise you still need something faster, or go with the XQD adaptor which is half the MEAD price, but still pay more than twice per Gb (vs SD cards) for the XQD storage.
      Either way - I have gotten around it completely because I now have my Shogun Inferno which I have run Cheap Samsung Evo 1tb/2tb SSD storage in at around 30c per GB.
      Oh not dissing Sony BTW - For all intents of purposes they are my Only Go To brand, and if I knew anything about other brands I would probably be able to say they all do the same as well!

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 Před 5 lety

      @@lklmmedia4715 SxS is quite old now - at the time that Sony introduced it there wasn't really a comparable non-proprietary system. The buss has two ends - the express card 34 end and the SD card end - I'm pretty sure it's the SD card end that's the bottleneck. XQD are more expensive but faster and more robust than even UHSII. And yes Sony do gouge on price for their proprietary formats - they think it's their right to charge an arm and a leg for professional equipment. Glad you found a solution in the Shogun. Excellent bit of kit.

Diffraction losses mean you shouldn't really shoot at an aperture smaller than f/5.6, and especially so at the wideangle end of the zoom.
