  • The Z90 is Sony's latest addition to their line of compact, palm camcorders. It features many improvements over its predecessor - the X7, including fantastic autofocus performance and HDR support in the form of HLG.

The X70 also got the 100Mbps QFHD by a free firmware upgrade (if the device was already softkey licensed for QFHD) and the MPEG-HD420/422 codecs by licensed software key as well.

The cursor button is there because the HDMI cable would get in the way if you are using it and place the button to its left, and a backward pointing video output is always better than a side mounted one.

I realize this is from 2018. But I’m wondering if the Z90 can shoot 4K now with a license upgrade just how they did with the X70? If not, the it seems the X70 offers more as it can shoot internal 4K? Also I am a huge fan of the BOSS stabilization. How is the stabilization of the Z90? Is it just as good as BOSS, or even better? I would hope better.

It is now mid 2023.We all know that the Z90 is an enhanced version of the AX700. Recently there have been price drops on the AX700 by many sellers including B&H, knocking $200 off the regular Sony price. I wonder if this is an omen that Sony will finally be introducing something newer. Panasonic has 4K 60P in its HC-X1500, though the sensor is smaller. Maybe Sony realizes that it needs to go there.

Nice review! I know the Z90 has the same sensor than the NX80, but I think the Z90 works better in low light conditions. It must be just a feeling, 'cause both of them are supposed to work the same, but... By the way, what tripod are you using with the Z90? I'm looking for one just like that. Cheers!

I am wanting a dedicated camcorder. I shoot Sony already. An a6400 and an a7ii and RX10. I am wanting to stay Sony for the color science and so on. I think it will be this one. I had shot some 4K UHD video with my a6400 and it over heated. They were rather short clips too. Reset the heat alert to high will see how that goes. I shoot video mostly for my Church for me at this time. May help out more as a remote and so on. Need something dependable that won't break the bank. Looks like this one is it.

I too am interested to learn more about the image stabilisation this camera uses. Sony's website is very vague on the matter, so I'm assuming that it's a fairly basic vibrating interlens mechanism rather than the innovative and remarkably effective 'floating lens assembly' they use on the AX53.

Nice review. I too HATE the placement of the thumb joystick. It's true that it can cramp your thumb if you reach for it too often. aslo, it might have been a good idea to mention the sister cameras, NV80 and AX700 which are slightly different and have significant cost difference. I chose the NX80 because I don't shoot 1080 anymore and have no use for a 1080 SDI port. I also feel that the .mp4 wrapper is far more desirable and flexable (universally playable with less decoding overhead) than the X70/Z90 XAVC-L .mxf wrapper. Nice job on ths video.

Both good cameras, but canon is better! Sony has stepped gain, so any changes in gain will bee seen abruptly. Canon has smooth gain transitions. Sony’s slowest rocker zoom is not slow at all and the zoom wheel is a joke. It is stepped zoom, which is very ugly. Canon has 50/60p Sony does not. Canon can record 4 channel audio. In general Canon button layout is better.
      The biggest Sony advantages:
      * Picture profiles are more capable.
      * White balance can be changed while recording.
      * MI she that is on the body of the camera. (Handle has to be removed)
      * Wireless timecode sync.
Sony really lost their attention to detail. They are only chasing image quality, but usability is poor.

Could you tell me more reasons for should I choose Canon?

    • @AlexTabachnyy
      @AlexTabachnyy Před 5 lety +1

      @@AnaMuriel: ☺
Both Sony and Canon can be used for great work and can produce great quality.
Even though Sony per specifications has better number, the quality will not be noticeable, at least to my eye.
Canon wins in Usability compared to Sony, however Sony has more advanced features and settings.
What makes Canon Slightly better than Sony, is their Zoom motor. It is very smooth and can work at very slow zoom speed. This produces a little more professional video.
Another Canon feature that beats Sony is the Smooth Gradual ISO/Gain transition. When changing ISO/gain on Sony it is stepped and noticeable, which at times needs to be edited out. Canon can simulate smooth exposure change with ISO/Gain that no one will even notice.
Those are the 2 features that are of biggest importance. Canon also has 4-channel audio, but usually no one really uses that, however I find it very useful for my type of work.
      Buying:
XF405 - is not worth it. Extra cost for SDI connection that is now outdated, totally not worth it if you are not working with multi-camera live production switching.
XF400 - same camera as 405 but only has HDMI, it is HDMI 2.0 which will output 4K video!
This is the best camera for the money, however it is quite pricy.
GX10 - is the same camera as XF series, but missing the XLR Audio inputs and a few more features that can be upgraded if needed at extra cost. You still get 85% of the XF405 just some higher end features are missing that you may not even notice. It is a great budget camera with video quality of much more expensive cameras.
For Vloging GX10 will be just perfect. It is light, great quality, easy to use, and has much smoother exposure and zoom transitions. Since it does not have the handle it is lighter and can easily go on a gimbal stabilizer. Even though it does not have XLR Microphone connectors, it does have 3.5mm microphone input for microphone connection.
If you have the budget for XF400 it is nearly a perfect camera. The handle can also be removed for weight reduction. It has WiFi remote control. Also having 4-chanel audio with (Balanced) XLR connection is quite handy but not critical. XF400, in my opinion, just slightly beats all the cameras with the value for the money.
I hope this was helpful ☺ and Wish you all Best!

I'm also torn between the xf--400 and the or the z90, but I already need one by February. XF-400 has 4k @ 60p but no slow motion with 1080P The canon also doesn't give the same codec in 1080P . The sony's though have a lot going for them I like the high frame rates in 1080 like up to 1000 fps! All canon gives is 120fps. Most of my shoting now will still be in HD but I don't want a camera that be obsolete in a year. The Sony's shoots in a higher bit rate in HD, and since most of my shooting now will still be in HD, the Sony looks really good. I had the G30 and it worked really well for me, except the lack of professional audio inputs. I'm familiar with the layout of the Canon and have a few batteries that would seem to work with the XF-400. Then again the canon stabilization is probably a lot better,. As I posted though one of the most important features to me will be the low light capability. I have a job at the beginning of February and have to make a decision by then . I've been looking around for a review, and I really like The reviews here! I'm sure there's a lot of others who are in our dilemma. Thanks for reaching out! Jake

I am no expert in specs but I've been using the XF100 for about 2 years and recently got the XF400/XF405. I returned them as I was completely unwhelemed with them.
They felt cheap and didn't seem to have the construction of the 100 or 200. They made the batteries smaller for the 400 which I believe the z90 already were but the downgrade from the 100 was surprising. I also heard and felt plenty of zoom / motor noise for my outdoor shots. Currently I'm torn between going with a pair of z90 or z150.
Does anyone here have a strong opinion of the z150 as opposed to this 90? Battery life will likely be far better with the 150 and I also realize the size of of the unit will be larger (which I don't think I mind).

I have NX100 (which is the Z150 brother), and the NX80 (the Z90 sister). I like the larger cam, because the controls are much simpler. I expect Sony will soon make the Hybrid focus in the larger cams. The focus is excellent on the NX80, although it will focus on things right in front of you. The main problem shooting with NX100 is that when shooting sport zooming in and out and panning at the same time, the camera auto focus, loses focus and can take a long time to refocus, at times, I have to zoom out, to help the camera find focus again, I tend to use manual focus on this camera, which is fine, because it has the 3 rings up front, the NX80 and Z90 have only one ring, which is switchable, not ideal, but it is a smaller camera. Battery life on the NX100 is all day, not so with NX80. The NX80 has XAVCS, so does the NX100, but the NX100 must use SDXC cards to record in that format, the NX80 can use SDHC even in 4K at 60MPS. At 100MPS you'll need a SDXC U3 card. I haven't compared the two camera to see which codec is better. I hope this helps.

What are you talking about man? That camera costs more that 3000€/$ and its very bad in low light. A part from that the S-log and HDR are useless in interior because of the noise. Even sony A6300 has better image quality that this plastic junk. If you want blurry backroung you have to put the camera literary like 10 cm or zoom 100% to your subject which is extremely total nonsense. You have the same quality even better in JVC or Panasonic for almost have the price 1500 €/$. Shame on you shame on you...You reviews are full with bad info and misunderstanding, you are true shame.

Nice review! I know the Z90 has the same sensor than the NX80, but I think the Z90 works better in low light conditions. It must be just a feeling, 'cause both of them are supposed to work the same, but... By the way, what tripod are you using with the Z90? I'm looking for one just like that. Cheers!
