A key architect of Blairism, Peter Mandelson is known for saying, "I'm a fighter, not a quitter". From spin doctor to cabinet minister to European Commissioner, his political experience has both breadth and depth. Join David Aaronovitch as he explores, with Mandelson, the challenges faced by New Labour as well as the contemporary challenges facing the Labour Party today. The pair also take a look at the political impact of Brexit as well as the Covid-19 pandemic, the electoral effectiveness of Boris Johnson and the growing significance of technology in society.
After navigating himself through a sizeable series of appointments and dismissals during his time in government, Peter Mandelson sheds light on his wealth of political experiences.

This man has been a very effective poison in British politics that is still in use today.

The fall of the Left and the fall of Labour are two different things.Today's Labour is "Left" only inasmuch as it is politically to the left of the Conservatives - and then only slightly and often imperceptibly going by what comes out of Starmer's mouth. Indeed, some of Corbyn's manifesto was to the right of 1970's Conservative Party policy (vide taxation, for example). The Overton window has moved so far to the right it's on a different side of the building. At the moment, for me, both main parties are utterly unappealing - though I will still vote for Labour if there's a chance that will get the current lot of self-serving clowns ejected.

You are correct but you are missing something the overturn window is so far to the left on social issues that’s where politics is being won nowadays

Oh sure, racial bias training, unfettered immigration, choosing one's own gender at will, gay clergy, hormone blockers for 8 year olds, the decline of the nuclear family model and a gigantic welfare state makes Trotsky's ideas appear rather Thatcherite.

@@hakim2546 The Old Left ultimately cares more about the economic issues than the social issues. That's why they usually only talk about the economic Overton Window. They are willing to sacrifice the latter in order to secure the former. Plus, they hardly acknowledge ever that many center-left _and_ -right parties have moved towards Industrial Policy and protectionism, which is less 'right wing' than so-called neoliberalism. Anything that is not command and control is 'right wing.'

He seems to want Starmer in power, but Starmer doesn't want to be seen with him. No explanation of why he calls the most popular leader this century a 'near death experience' either.
