  • The restoration of my classic Alfa Romeo Giulia from 1972 continues.
    The right door sill had been finished about 1,5 years ago, now I finally returned to the project and tackled the left one. After 4 films, the new sill is restored and hopefully it will last for 5 decades just like the old one did. Well, parts of it.

    When the Giulia was presented in 1962, some Alfa dealers worried that, to repair that body, one needed the skills of the famous goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini. Watching your videos makes me think they had a point :)

      I once had a multi-national team and about half a dozen of them worked on the North-American market. For reasons too complex too mention, suddenly the manager of the American team found himself working with three (!) German employees. So I asked him: don’t you thing your team is a becoming a little too German? He said: you can’t be enough German when you’re into cars in the US.
      Little excursion into the pre-Greasy-Fingers part of my life. 😆

      @@GreasyFingers No rush, I am in agreement with the whole strip it down completely idea, I have recently dealt with a horrible paint job on my 1978 Trans Am Firebird where someone had painted the original white car black but so badly that I could find white parts everywhere! I did fix it properly and I much prefer the black but a part of me hates that although it was terribly abused in the past, it still is mostly original except for its colour. I really like the colour of Olivia! Have you mentioned what Alfa called it?

  • @jimmygrant3212
    @jimmygrant3212 Před 2 lety

    I removed all the factory butyl sound deadening in my Spider, used the aggressive wire wheel on the grinder to remove all the surface rust and most of the paint. Then brushed on a 2 part marine Epoxy Barrier Coat primer. I brushed on two heavy coats, probably equivalent to 4 or 5 properly rolled on coats. I used white primer which I then went over with a coat of black paint. I then applied Dynamat Xtreme on the floors and firewall.
    The primer I used was leftover Interlux 2000E Barrier Coat. This stuff is used on the bottom of boats to make a truly impermeable barrier from water.
    I plan to do the same to my Berlina which has a few rust issues, but is still in very good condition it still has the factory paint and no one has ever done any body repairs.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  Před 2 lety

      Many thanks for sharing this, Jimmy.
      I hope many will read it.
      I’ve recently seen Bradco Restorations using urethane bed liner for the floor and I think I’ll go with that for the same reason you used the boat primer: it allows thick layers and won’t rub off easily.
      Dynamat is a must. Did you also use the thermal insulation product from Dynamat, Dynaliner?

    • @jimmygrant3212
      @jimmygrant3212 Před 2 lety

      @@GreasyFingers I’m going to use dynaliner on the firewall and transmission tunnel. I might add a thermal insulation down the road if it’s louder, but it’s also a convertible.
      I’ll probably do dynamat and dynaliner for the Berlina since it’s a sedan. I thought about bedliner, but as far as I know the quality 2 part products are only sprayable which is the reason I went with the boat bottom primer because it’s made to be brushed, rolled or sprayed and makes a truly moisture proof barrier. BradCo actually did the rust repair and repaint on my Spider, their metal work on Alfa’s is the best of the best. On their full restorations they bedliner the entire underside, floors, and trunk. Definitely much better than the rubber undercoating, my Berlina was sprayed with an extra heavy coat of rubber undercoating before it left Germany sometime in the 1970s to the US.
