    Thanks Corey for running us through the whole process of applying and a general overview of the goHunt/Insider and how it can help tremendously. I don't have 1k laying around right now, so after watching yours and Randy's Montana application videos I will wait and buy a preference and bonus point later in the year and maybe if I get a much better paying job than working retail or save a grand I will fully apply next year. My youngest brother who is still serving overseas for another 3 months would love to go on an out west on our own hunt this fall after he gets back home. Probably a cow elk (since neither of us have the space for the rack of a nice bull, even in Euro mount form) and a Mule deer buck, but we will see how it goes. Good luck on drawing a tag in MT, just watched an episode with you and Randy archery hunting in MT, awesome to see so many close encounter and hear em.

    This is some great information, for those who don’t hunt Montana this is critical to understand. Over the years I’ve always purchased the big game combo just due to the fact that it’s around $100-$200 more to hunt deer as well. If you look at the price of the deer only license it is also very expensive by itself. There are great general deer units as well.

    Hello, I have lived in Montana all my life and our regulations have always been a bit of a puzzle for out of staters. I have no problem understanding the regs after 40 years. 😆 Good luck fellas. I usually hunt only on my ranch in the bull Mts north of Billings so I understand the regulations, but have little use for them. Thanks for the video.

    What if you just want to receive a preference point and DO NOT want to actually draw it, is this possible?
    Oops, jumped the string. You clearly explained this in the video, I just didn't wait for the explanation.

    I only have one question and I might have missed it so I apologize if that is the case. So if you apply for an Elk Permit or Combo Tag are you just out the $900-1000 if you aren't drawn for anything? I understand that if you are drawn they charge you right away.

    @andrewconquest8504 Před 5 lety

    Hi Corey, this video provides so much more clarity, so thank you for that; however, I still have questions. My understanding based on what you said is that if I draw an elk license, I can hunt any general unit in the state? In my case, I was successful in drawing the general elk license. I was also successful in drawing an elk permit (let's say 212-0; not my real permit but it has identical rules when compared to my real unit). Based off what I read, it seems I now have more restrictions on my hunt and am confined to one portion of a unit. Is this accurate (I hope not) or can you explain to me where my understanding is wrong?

  • @hierks
    @hierks Před 3 lety

    I know this video is dated and things may change for this coming 2021 season but I have a question for you anyway. If applying as a group is it true that if one of theprople in my party draw a tag, in our case 4 hunters, the. All of us do? Or would all of us need to draw in order for our party to get tags. We are non residents with currently no preference points.

  • @wwittkop
    @wwittkop Před 5 lety

    I'm a bit confused about the Bonus vs Preference Point! Preference points will help you draw the license, and bonus point will help you draw the permit? The bonus points are multiplied by 3 for additional entries for a chance to draw that permit, but bonus point do not necessarily guarantee the applicant a permit? On the one page you show (12:03), how can the archery only permit applicants with 5+ points have a 100% chance of drawing? Along those same lines, you mention permits that "take a non-resident 3 or 4 points to draw." How can you say how many points it takes to draw (17:48)? Couldn't you only say they'd have a better chance? Is there a way to know you'll draw a permit once you hit a certain # of points?

    Cory, great video but I heard you say around minute 28 where you were discussing the pricing you stated that if we are drawn on the elk combo but not the permit do we loose the entire application fee of $900 approx. My boy is living up there and we were planning to go this year up there but not if I'm going to loose 1800 dollars. Can you provide some clarification? Thank.

    • @Elk101
      @Elk101  Před 5 lety

      Mike, it is important to understand the difference in the Elk Combo License and the Elk Permit. If you apply for both the Elk Combo license AND an elk permit, you will pay $984 upfront. This includes the following:
      Base Hunting License $15
      Aquatic Species Pass $15
      Elk PERMIT App Fee $4
      Elk BONUS Point $20
      General - Elk COMBO $870
      Elk PREFERENCE Point $50
      Application Fee $10
      If you are drawn for the Elk Combo License and NOT DRAWN for the Elk Permit, you will not receive a refund. You will receive your General - Elk Combo license, which allows you to hunt elk in one of the 130+ general units. You can opt to NOT APPLY for an Elk Permit at the time of your application, and that will save you the $24 App Fee/Bonus Point Fee, but if you are drawn for the Elk Combo License, you will be charged the full amount. I hope that helps clear up any confusion. Thanks!

  • @torysavage1
    @torysavage1 Před 5 lety +1

    Thanks Corey! Quick question for clarification. If you have zero preference points for the elk license and purchase one preference point but then draw for 2019. Do you still get 1 preference point for 2020 or do they refund your dollars for that point and you go into next year with zero? Figured this may happen with a 50% chance to draw. Thanks again for taking the time help others out.

    • @Elk101
      @Elk101  Před 5 lety +2

      If you apply for the General - Elk Combo license and select the Preference Point box, you will only receive a Preference Point (and be charged) if you do not draw the license. If you draw the General - Elk Combo license, you will be refunded the Preference Point fee and NOT RECEIVE a Preference Point.

      @@Elk101 Thank you for your quick reply. I drew on zero points last year so I chose not to purchase a point again this year. Oops,😣 I will start clicking yes going forward. Thanks again

      I was told if you purchase the point at the time of purchasing the license you will be put in the drawing with 1 point basically guaranteeing your draw. This was direct from a the licensing staff at FWP MT. Ive heard it both ways now.

    Well you have done gone and done it, I'm now more confused than before I watched this video.
    I filled out my app just like you done but added the bow and arrow which is supposed to be 10 bucks. My total was 1,030.88
    Also it was my understanding that if you checked the box for a preference point and paid the 50 bucks you went into the draw with one preference point this year.
    One other issue I'm having is you can use an archery tag from another state from the previous year to cover the need for a bow hunter education certificate but I didn't see a place to add that info when I applied.
    Well as you can see I'm a mess and to think this is my third year applying for an elk combo.
