    Great info on New Mexico, I used to live there in a little town called Truth or Consequences only went Elk hunting once I believe it was in 16A , for any Elk missed a cow the first day and had plenty of other opportunities to shoot, but I got caught up with helping my buddy track a bull he shot, hour after hour and we never could find his bull. Some times it does happen unfortunately.
    Great hunting in New Mexico I have to say, big ass mule deer for sure....
    Best of luck to you in NM.

    Seems like some misleading odd info in your video detail. Nm unit 45 1st resident archery elk isnt overall a 46% odd to draw. Overall odds for that hunt in 2018 and 2019 sit around 20-22%. Yes the resident applicants that put it as a 1st choice in 2018 were 49% and in 2019 36%. Need to look at 84% tags available to overall applicants for more accurate odds.

    Thanks for the details, curious to know if you applied what unit you found appealing. 2 years in a row I applied and haven't drawn yet. Debating using an outfitter so I can finally draw my tag.

    Thanks for the tips. Can you elaborate on which states do not use the point system if there are others than NM, and which states have OTC tags?

    • @brettbailey8983
      @brettbailey8983 Před 5 lety +3

      I believe Idaho and NM are the only western states for elk that don't have point systems. Idaho and Colorado both have OTC elk tags. Montana has the possibility for a leftover tag.

    • @Elk101
      @Elk101  Před 5 lety +2

      Just to add to Brett's response....Oregon also has OTC elk tags. Montana used to have leftover elk licenses, but for the past 2-3 years, they have all gone in the draw, and with 0 preference points, you only have around a 50% chance of drawing. There are other states that have OTC elk tags (Utah, Washington, etc.), but they probably aren't worth considering for a NR.

  • @TheChuckler12
    @TheChuckler12 Před 5 lety

    I possibly missed this Corey.. in NM, do you front 100% the tag cost to apply or just the $65?

  • @johnoltrogge6333
    @johnoltrogge6333 Před 4 lety

    I think if you check, you'll find that the 10% Outfitter/Guide pool is for resident and non-resident, not just non-resident as you stated.

    • @trophyhilll
      @trophyhilll Před 3 lety

      that is correct. however if i had to guess, I'd say 99.9% of residents do not apply in the outfitters pool.

    • @johnoltrogge6333
      @johnoltrogge6333 Před 3 lety

      @@trophyhilll Unfortunately, I think your guess would be wrong. If only 1/10th of 1 percent were using the guide/outfitter applications for residents, then why bother? They bother because its jokingly referred to the 'friends and family' plan. Since NM doesn't provide the actual statistics of resident verses non-resident that applies for the drawing, we have no firm data for which to compare, but some outfitters have allowed their license number to be used for non-paying hunters because the 10 percent of 'guided' hunters in some cases actually represented a smaller applicant pool than the 86% 'resident' pool. Not my opinion, just what I've heard from Outfitters that are now having trouble booking guided hunts.

    • @trophyhilll
      @trophyhilll Před 3 lety

      i am a resident and i know of not 1 single resident who has or will apply in the outfitter pool. reason being, most competent elk hunters don't need an outfitter to hunt their home state and therefore no need pay the added expense for someone to hold their hands. i would also venture to guess that 99.9999% of hunters who use the outfitter pool to apply, are NR's. until you can show me data that proves that wrong, i will stand by that statement. 😉🏹🏹🏹

    seems like a pretty douchey move on New Mexicos part of not refunding the license fees. its just 65$ but if you apply several states those non refundables start to add up.

    Thanks for another thorough walkthrough on how to use goHunt insider to plan on an elk hunt every year. I like that this state has no point system so a guy like me that has never applied for anything has just as good of odds to draw as someone who has been there or has applied for years. A bit of a bummer that the license fee isn't refundable anymore, but at least it is only $65. I am waiting on my youngest bro who is serving in the Army overseas and won't be back for 2.5 months to get home as well as for me to find a better job than working at WalMart to decide what to do out west. I know he really wants to do a hunt out west and after finishing off his 9 month stint over seas he deserves it. Even though bow would be sweet, we would try rifle for our first trip. From the looks and sounds of it and the fact that he won't be back until after all the state's deadlines are over, it looks like maybe Colorado OTC general elk and deer combo tags for us if we do go this year. Still I like to learn and maybe 2020 will be the year.
