I knew Martin and as a man he was the most genuine and polite man you could ever meet. @@benjaminsidneykidd-bentley3966 Paisley would never have been voted in if it hadnt of been for the nationalists starting to vote for sinn fein. The nationalists started to vote for the extremes and the unionists followed suit.
The good friday agreement was really cut out for the Sdlp and the Ulster unionists.
The sdlp believe in a united Ireland as well but the difference would be they also believed in making Northern Ireland or the North if you prefer work for everyone as long as there is equality until theres a time for peaceful change. Sinn Fein would just really be fixated on a united Ireland and being the largest party in that Ireland. The unionist community dont trust Sinn fein due to there past as well as some more modern less destructive sectarian incidents. Therefore there would likely be more troubles if this situation came about even if it was a minority unionist people. The british government are in charge for making a decision on a United Ireland referendum. Although they would love to walk away from Ireland like any World superpower they will not do this if they suspect it is going to be devisive. Its all about keeping face for them. Its doubtful as well if Ireland could even afford to keep a peaceful Northern Ireland [North of Ireland] never mind one with more troubles.
Therefore Sinn fein and the good friday agreement guarantees that Northern Ireland will remain part of the union for a long time after any possible future nationalist majority wishes for change, And also with the extremes in power meaning Northern Ireland will not really work for either Nationalists or unionists for there bread and butter issues. Great situation to be in.

Before this, I was watching the interview with Tony Blair and what struck me was the reactions of Blair and McGuinness to the question "Do you think there is blood on your hands?" While McGuinness regretted the death of 26 people in Birmingham and seemed honest when he said he had been shocked, Blair, when being asked "after your decision to go to war, which killed one million people, do you feel guilt about that?", he just grinned insanely, full of spite and defiance. He didnt give a shit.

McGuinness promoted Frank Hegarty to such a height within the Provos he was put in charge of a libyan arms shipment. Eamonn McCann[civil rights anti violence activist] knew Franko and he was astonished at his progress within PIRA.
McCann says he was not a very discreet person and says it was common knowledge Frank was an ex stickie who had passed information to the army. For Martin McGuinness to promote such a character is highly suspect.
Others reported he was decent sort but not very bright. McGuinness somehow convinced Frank to come home after he was outed as a tout and had him shot before he could be interrogated.
Martin was also known to travel freely and live openly in Derry unlike many 'activists'.

I'm an American. I met Martin McGuinness in the early eighties, in the Bogside, amidst the most dire and dower circumstances. The man, may he rest in peace, was a hero--pure and simple. He risked everything for his country and his people, who were nothing but complete and utter victims of a centuries old tyranny. Outside of the Nationalists of the six counties, he had no help and no support from anyone, to speak of. He did all that he did for selfless reasons, and at profound sacrifice and risk to himself and his family. He was a leader of leaders.
To hear him interrupted and condescended to by this impudent, glib Free-Stater know-nothing, with his boiler plate pedestrian, supercilious moralism, from his position of comfort in the Republic, and his one generation removed, ex post facto selective lamentation of "violence," is nothing short of nauseating. This young ingrate owes everything he takes for granted to Martin and to the others like him that went before, that effected the Republic that this clever gobshite takes for granted. That McGuinness would listen politely to this little nothing's carping tells you all you need to know, both in terms of Martin's mettle and in terms of the shame of the betrayal of the preponderance of his fellow Irishmen in the 26-Counties, for 75-years.

@@MetalAaron I guess I can elaborate a bit on the longer story: I attended a meeting that Martin held with the Bogside Republican Youth, in the old Bogside Inn, where we were introduced. The purpose of the meeting, called by Martin, was to stop the Youth from hijacking city busses, discharging passengers and driver, then taking the busses out and burning them to the ground. Martin's instruction was that it was counterproductive and only redounded to the detriment of the people of the Bog, to others, and to the cause (something others could learn from, in other places, today). He was a brave and decent man; twice the man as most with whom he would later serve in government--not to mention this little RTE clown.

It is absolutely right that men who have been responsible for so much violence should be held to account. Adams was on the IRA army council and is now a prominent politician. If a prominent politician was in the UDA and had been it's political representative in the past then by all means question them vigorously and I'm sure Turbidy would do this. However there is no loyalist counterpart to Adams in the public eye.

The very existence of rebel groups were a direct response to British occupation. There would have never been an IRA if Ireland wasn't invaded and occupied by a foreign power.
