    It’s paradoxically to see Turbidity doing an interview on corruption when he was ‘given’ the Top Job in RTE ‘based on nepotism,’ while more capable candidates were excluded from consideration. Turbidity’s career was ‘handed’ to him by virtue of his grandfather being a top dog in RTE.

    RTE, and it’s ‘poster boy’ Turbidity, have always been a kip for journalism. There are so many relations working together in RTE who got their jobs on “pull,” that you could call it a family business. So much for integrity and equal opportunities in RTE, it’s sickening -and they think the viewing public are dopes! Defund RTE!

    Ryan Turbidy doesn't know his facts as a broadcaster - he's a prominent FF supporter as is evident here and fails to follow the discussion at a nember of points. Murdering thugs, bullies, liars, extortionists, racketteers, dictators, as power hungry as Charlie Haughty ever was. They have no intention of leading a democratic nation but of crushing democracy and creating a dictatorship. We should carry out more investigations of their business interests and commercial tactics. I hope we will never fall into their hands. It will be a reign of terror, encouraging tit for tat retribution, thwarting rule of law and perverting justice whenever it will suit them. No siree, keep your shower of swindlers thanks. Bad enough they are in the Dail at all with their pretence of politics. Just to remind you: Sinn Fein do not have a monopoly on Republicanism in its original sense, nor are they the last bastion of it. They do not, and will never, speak for me. They also do not have a monopoly on speaking for the underdog or for the workers. They just use them as a means to an end. Until they admit everything, all they have killed or tortured, all they have done wrong, they can never be trusted. Ever. Their arrogance knows no bounds. Just look at all the flouting of the law for Bobby Storey's funeral. They do as they please. Criminals. That's what they are.

    I moved to the U K in 1986, I left a Dublin full of corruption including a property development company, and I use that term loosely. Dublin is a property developer heaven and haven. The city is a mess with horrible developments, it’s an eyesore. You get ripped off in Temple Bar, and there is a latent begrudgery for leaving the place. I would never go back. The nicest Irish people I found were in the countryside. Dubliners are up their own behinds, not all though. The working class are the ones who lose out there. I was a young Irish man in my early 20's in the mid 80's and was told to emigrate by Brian Lenihan senior, so I did what I was told and I am glad I did. I am fucking furious upon learning from this book of the level of corruption by Haughey and his mafia mob and their treatment of this good man Tom Gilmartin. The £50,000 donation was a donation and nothing more. It was made specifically to a political party and not to an individual and it was proven beyond shadow of a doubt by the Mahon Tribunal that Tom Gilmartin made that donation to the party and had no idea Flynn was going to pocket it for himself and use it to buy a farm. He kept it illegally but it was not given illegally and this has been explained in detail in various interviews by the family, so cease with the libel please and thank you.

    This is a very important conversation. About a society - changing event. One thing that’s for certain, is that this good family took a lot of the weaponry out of the hands of the corrupt all over the world with their raw courage and spirit. They never did receive proper justice, and too many criminals got away. But Ireland is not the same. Corruption still abounds in the rest of the world as well, but at least people know to look for it because of his efforts. This family set out to improve economic prospects for the Irish, and really he did.
    This family believes the adage that all it takes for evil to prevail, is for good people to do nothing; and the proof of that is in their legacy and the Irish economy. They set the example of love and compassion in doing so much to lift their fellow-countrymen out of abject, desperate poverty.

      You should read Frank Connelly's book. Its very good. Gilmartin did'nt need Lawlor, but Lawlor got wind that Gilmartin was asking questions about developments and pushed his way in and immediately demanded money. When Gilmartin refused, Lawlor and George Redmond made life impossible for him. This whole episode in Irish history is an absolute embarrassment.

    Ethical bribes might be getting replaced or supplemented by Stakes , Legal corporate bribes , Maybe these were the good times, compare what happens in some countries with dictatorships and places being drained of oil while the locals live in poverty and fear. Was this just that politicians wanted their share for giving planning permission or giving out a contract to a developer, maybe its just business in way so long as you don't get caught. Ethical bribe means you don't sell out your country or do anything that might harm others

    Tom Gilmartin should not have entertained these politicians, even if he stood to lose out on a lucrative deal. A man of principle would have walked away. As for the politicians in question, weren`t they all given pardons afterwards. Speaking of which there was some guy recently who was given a posthumous pardon eighty odd years after he was hung. Seems to me all these pardons can only mean one thing, the Irish judiciary is not fit for purpose. Why else would they be making so many mistakes. The tribunal Gilmartin was involved in cost 200 mil and following all the pardons it was just a lot of hot air. The lesson here is that Ireland is just as corrupt now as it was then.

      Pol This is victim-blaming (you wouldn't be a Fianna Fáil stooge, would you?). He was being subjected to extortion. Would you blame the Sicilian shopkeeper who is told he must pay over 'security money' or they won't be able to 'prevent' his shop being burned down? The man was clearly utterly honourable - he went to the Gardái and and no-one would help him. When you are put in the same position, and set to lose everything by 'walking away' then you can throw stones. Until then, you're a hurler on the ditch.

    Emily, I may have worded that poorly, as you seem to think I was attacking the Gilmartins. In fact I was attacking the rotten to the core FF party, so I'm sorry if you think I was trying to libel the innocent party in this.
    Yes it was a donation, but essentially FF made him believe he had to make a large 'donation' to avoid deliberate political obstructions to his project.
    When I asked why were the revenue commissioners not looking into this, I meant in the sense - as you say below of intended party funds being in effect stolen by Flynn for his own personal use.
    So again, why did Revenue never pursue him on this?? They were/are afraid to investigate a former EU kleptocrat?

    • @EmilyGilmartin117
      @EmilyGilmartin117 Před 10 lety +12

      I see what you meant now. I did take it the wrong way, as it has been a common accusation made by people who don't bother with the specifics of the true story. No hard feelings I hope. You are right, of course, in asking why nothing was done about Flynn's robbery and I can only reply to that by asking why they have done nothing about ANY of the crimes in this sordid story. As Thomas says in the interview, it is shocking that politicians in Ireland go unpunished. Ahern is still flying high with his properties in Europe of course and Owen O'Callahan is still seeking to make himself King of Cork and the people let him. Memories are short.
