Martin contradicted everything he said here. Ruairi was bang on with his assessment of where things were going to go.
Not saying either one was wrong in the long term but on the basis of how things would go and the fact that the armed campaign would be run down and eventually become an embarrassment, Ruairi was 100% accurate. There's no doubt about it and listening to Martin here only reinforces that.

The British were the first to know the demographic shift was going to unite Ireland - they convinced the Sinn Fein leadership to accept transitional power - seems like a smart move by both sides - in 1986 SF had 4% of power in Republic Ireland , it's 25% today , and biggest party in the North - that's some shift from 86.

I wonder if McGuinness would have got such a rousing standing ovation if his audience knew that only 12 yrs later he and his Sinn Fein \IRA party would through the GFA , sign up to the principle of consent , recognising partition and the legitimacy of the 6 counties .
All for a seat at a Power Sharing executive , that was always available since 1973 at Sunningdale .
Republics are obsessed with the fact that they caused damage to the British establishment through their ‘armed struggle’ but the bottom line is that the IRA failed miserably in their campaign to remove British rule in Ireland . It was never ever on the negotiating table , in the end Republicans have accepted the only way to achieve a sovereign Ireland is through peaceful democratic means .
John Hume told them this every day since 1969 , it unfortunately took 30 yrs for Republicans to understand that fact.
Giving the Brits a hard time was never enough , once the Brits broke the back of the IRA through by riddling the organisation with informers it was always over bar the shouting . We are no better off today that we would have been by keeping with the peaceful, political process .
3500 lives lost during this so called ‘armed struggle ‘ was a total waste of lives ., time and the damage done to the economy .

The answer is, nope but the audience should have known the direction of travel by 86 if not the timing which I doubt Adams & Co knew themselves at this point in time, being willing to go step by step as conditions allowed which is largely what happened from 86 onwards. Admittedly it wasn't until the mid 90's that it became obvious for all to see. I must say it always baffles me that so many people from within the movement say they were unaware of the likely outcome by the time of the 1st ceasefire in 94, aftercall the deal on offer was plain to see in the shape of the Downing Street Declaration, no United Ireland in that document in the short-medium term.

Ruairi O was a purest, but not a realist. I liked him and his drive for a pure republican position. The IRA and Sinn Fein by 1986 was infiltrated by spies and the people were getting tired. When you have to admit that you cannot defeat the Brits by military means, you have a duty to talk. The Brits also knew that they could not defeat the IRA and told Martin and Gerry that they were not married to holding onto the 6 counties. That left room for negotiations. The Officials became the small ineffective Workers Party, so they entered constitutional politics anyway. Sinn Fein now may head both the Republic and the 6 counties. They gave up on radicalism for control of gov't. That does not feel good but it is prgmatic. Winning by military means might also have produced control over gov't ,either way you have to appeal to enough Irish men and women to make it work and the Provos did not have that kind of support. Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness both knew that from the inside out.

As Martin said and it no doubt applies to some of the the armchair generals on here “where were they when there was a war”. RSF and the Eire Nua policy has made no inroads in 34 years since 1986. SF have delivered an international binding agreement for British withdrawal in time with consent. It’s not perfect but the electoral strength of SF has made a United Ireland a reality rather than an aspiration. It’s easy for people to criticise McGuinness but I suppose Mandela was/is criticised too. How many British soldiers have been killed since 1986 by CIRA. I rest my case...

Clown, Britain is the only country I know who invades other countries bombs their homes, etc shoots and kills innocent victims in peaceful protests in their backs whilst trying to flee the terrifying genocide, they think their killings over in countries like Syria Afghan, etc are justified when they have no right to be there in the first place, you support this so-called justified killings of innocent civilians but you insist when these people fight back that THEY are the terrorists, LMFAO? Honestly, you are so screwed up in the head it's laughable then you think you can win a debate on the amount of professionally trained soldiers that were killed by normal freedom fighters fighting for their countries freedom from imperialism, this was a war between Irish civilians fighting for their own country and English invaders, Your army are terrorists just as much as the IRA were, except they are worst they are doing it in other countries too not just Ireland, bet your real proud to be a Brit :)

"Where were they when there was a war" could apply to most of his own party. Where was Mary Lou etc? Mcguinness achieved nothing that wasn't already on offer. The border poll was already a thing last held in 1973. Éire Nua remains the only serious framework how unionists could be absorbed into an independent Ireland. McGuinness' party have yet to draw up any blueprint how Ireland would be governed. They are too busy running British rule and fawning over British royals

That's disrespectful to the lads who were involved on both sides of the British border ! The lads in ulster had the financial backing and man power to move in and out as they wanted ! Most of the lads would have been more than happy to draw the British state back into the south of ireland 🇮🇪 to finish what they started .

The problem is that everything that he says from 3:00 is correct. He just has to remove "twenty" from the "twenty-six counties" bit and he's completely right. Republican struggle, sacrifice and rhetoric failed to get anywhere in the north, leaving them alone and isolated and easily dealt with. It's a shame that it took the best part of a decade and 700 more deaths before he and his colleagues took his comments to their logical conclusion and tried a different and more successful road.

Just replying to Arty m, do you honestly think that all IRA weapons were decommissioned and destroyed?? You have absolutely no understanding of politics either in life or in an armed struggle, politics is a way of life, democracy is a way of life, Martin mcGuinness in 1986 made an intelligent decision to allow a vote in relation to abstentionism thus opening new avenues of trust and support for the republican struggle in Northern Ireland, listening to yourself you seem as if you want to go on fighting forever, there's no way that a deep rooted unionist system going back hundreds of years would simply allow armed struggle to remove, it had to go hand in hand with politics, thus seen with the resignation of Martin shortly before his death, and the increase in republican representatives in the new assembly, unfortunately Rory decided to hardline and although I have the upmost respect for him he hasn't left very much of a positive legacy, it's a real pity and to hear him in his latter years slagging Adams and McGuinness is very sad. Attention had to go one way or another, as Martin said.. We are not at war with the Irish free state. RIP Comrade McGuinness.
