Very intersting: Most men in the beginning:" David is such a nice man!", most women instead:" what a creep!!" Speaks volumes about the actors great performance.

David: *Strips Ellie of her hat and coat and leaves her in the cold kitchen, grooms/tries to kill and SA her*
Joel: *Comforts Ellie by holding/rocking her, reminding her she’s safe and bundling her up in his own coat to keep her warm, despite being cold himself*
I think a bear hug from Pedro Pascal would make us all feel less afraid/alone: we all need to be held and told it’s going to be okay sometimes. 😢

@3:00 I totally agree Jessa! One of my pet peeves in media is when it's super cold out and people aren't wearing gloves or ever trying to breath air into their hands to keep them warm. I know it's a small thing but it really takes me out of the moment

In a life or death situation I do agree eating a dead body is acceptable but you have to have consent. It doesn’t seem the everyone that group knew what was going on let alone consented to it.

I believe the football team that was stranded in the Andes mountains (subject of the recent movie, "Society of Snow"), engaged in some cannibalism to survive. They were stranded on the mountains for 70 days. And I believe the people they ate, gave em permission to do so before they died.

The other 3 men weren't there when Joel and Ellie were attacked at the college. They showed up just to see Joel kill the man. They truly thought their man was attacked for no reason.

Hmm good point!! But another point: David's men were there to look for supplies, food. The fact that Alec started attacking Joel, and the fact that they had a number of unidentified dead bodies (could be that Alec was one of em) hanging in the shack... It's VERY possible that Alec was getting a jump start on killing and looting Joel, and then maybe even taking him back for food.

Troy Baker, who played (motion capture and voice) Joel in the games, played the character of James in this episode.
In the games, Joel often expressed his frustration and dislike of the name that Ellie picked for the horse, Callus, many times. There's nothing that explicitly says that Joel and Ellie's horse is named the same thing in the show (we actually get no name). But that horse is functionally Callus.
But still, it tickled me a bit to see the guy who played Joel in the games get to shoot and kill the horse he despised the name of lol

David joins an awful group of characters in television and movies that are so hated because they're monstrous AND eerily familiar. Voldemort is clearly a terrible person, a true villain, but most of us don't know someone like that in real life, nor are we likely to know about someone like that, unless you start reading about horrible people in history who were dictators and slaughtered thousands of people. But, we all know a smarmy teacher or boss like Dolores Umbridge, who abuses their position of authority to take advantage of people they're supposed to teach and lead. Unfortunately, we've seen way too many news stories of someone who abuses their position in churches or as a pseudo-parental figure to abuse children like David. It's chilling because although he's not real, there are many people like that walking around in real life.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 Před 3 měsíci +1

Unfortunately, that requirement of familiarity does lead people into assuming falsehoods about evil. I've heard claims that characters like Voldemort & Joker are unrealistic b/c they just do evil for the sake of it. As if serial killers don't exist in real life.

Oh, c'mon. Really! Bad hunting etiquette? All along its been "its the apocolypse, you do what you have to do to survive." BTW, Ellie stole freshly hunted rabbit from the Native American couple that made them soup without thinking twice about it. It would have just been Karma to have the deer she shot taken from her. Its all perspective. If we had been following that group across the country, we would have been upset when people in it died. As gar as the "they are the bad ones, they attacked us first" outlook, look at it from the groups side. First, the four men were out scavaging for supplies. They were all armed only with baseball bats. One of them sees two people with guns and a horse. First, that man had a wife and daughter that were starving and there was a horse that could feed his entire group for close to a month. Second, they may very well have had food on them, they certainly had guns that would be useful. Third, he wouldn't know if maybe they were part of a larger group, and now after seeing the four of them, perhaps have that larger group come looki g for his group that contains many women and children. Again, including his wife a d actual daughter. People just gloss over that we know for a fact that Joel has murdered innocent people before. On more than one occasion.
As for the actors, the man who played David was Joel in the game. Just as the actor who played Perry earlier, played Tommy in the game. They have reasons for who they pick for roles often.

My understanding is that this religious element was originally planned to be part of the game story, too, but it eventually got cut because it slowed down and complicated the level too much. Remember, that banner that says "WHEN WE ARE IN NEED, HE SHALL PROVIDE" was in the original game, too.
That said, I do agree that we could afford to have a few more positive portrayals of religious leaders in media. The issue, I think, is that many creative/artistic people have had really horrible experiences with religious leaders in their own lives, and that experience affects how they then portray religion in their art. After all, many artists are unusual, outside-the-box thinkers, and sadly there are still plenty of religious leaders who respond VERY negatively to anyone who thinks unconventionally or asks too many questions.

    • @SidPhoenix2211

What change? To make David a "Christian"?
Buddy, this was subtext that was already in the game. David, when he's an NPC ally to Ellie, says stuff like, "Lord, forgive 'em" to the infected.
The banner that says, "When We Are in Need, He Will Provide" also exists in the game. The first half of this phrase is what the episode is named after.
Even in the game, it becomes pretty clear that David only cares about himself.
The show just gets to explore David's group in more detail.
And it makes it abundantly clear that David ISN'T actually a Christian, it's why I used quotation marks at first. He's just saying whatever he needs to keep these people under his thumb. He doesn't actually care or believe. David, seemingly, has one God: Cordyceps. And he has adopted its philosophy.
And most of the people in his community who actually believe in God (and are just regular survivors, relative innocents) aren't even aware of the human meat in their food. Only David, Josiah (the one Joel stabs in the neck), and James know for sure.
So it isn't saying that "Christianity bad". It is making no judgement on the religion, but instead showing how awful people in power corrupt and use tools like religion to control people. And this can happen (and has happened) with every religion.

not sure if I would call it moronic, religious cults are a real thing there is just less representation of non religious cults. And more so David was not even really religious he just used it for power so that enforces being aware of false prophets.

It's what evil men have done since the beginning of time, take advantage of scared and desperate people who are looking for meaning and hope in life and poison that trust and faith to enable them to enrich themselves and hurt innocents
